Your RadioShack USB Flatbed Color Scanner is designed for notebook or desktop PCs that have a universal serial bus (USB) port. You can us e the scan­ner to quickly scan information, su ch as documents and photogra phs, in colo r or grayscale. Important Safety Instructions
1. Read Instructions — All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the scanner is operated.
2. Retain Instructions — The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference.
3. Heed Warnings — All warnings on the scanner and in the operating instructions should be adhered to.
4. Follow Instructions — All operating and use instructions should be fol­lowed.
5. Water and Moisture — Th e scanner should not be used near water (for example near a bathtub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and so on).
6. Carts and Stands — The scanner should be used only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer.
9. Power Sources — The scanner should be connected to a power source only of th e type descr ibed in the operating instructions or as marked on the scanner.
10. Power Cord Protection — Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not li kely to be wal ked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, conve­nience receptacles, and the point where the cords exit from the scan­ner.
11. Cleaning — The scanner should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer. Do not use chem­ical cleaners.
12. Non-Use Periods — The power cord of the scanner should be un plugge d from the outlet when the scanner is not being used for a long period of time.
7. Ventilation — The scanner should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper functioning. For example, the scanner should not be situated o n a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may obstruct the ventilation.
8. Heat — The scanner sh oul d be s itu­ated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat re gisters, stoves, or other scanners (including amplifi­ers) that produce heat.

13. Object and Liquid Entry — Care should be taken so that objects do not fall, and liquids are not spilled, on the scanner.

The scanner uses the supplied 12V, 1250-mA AC adapter for power.

You must use a Class 2 power source that su pplies

12V DC and delivers at least 1250 mA. Its center tip must be set to positive and its plug must fit the scanner's plied adapter meets the se sp eci fi ca ­tions. Using an adapter that does not meet these speci fications could damage the scanner or the adapter.
• Always connect the AC adapter to the scanner before you c onnec t it to AC power. When you finish, discon­nect the adapter from A C power be­fore you disconnect it from the scanner.

INSTALLING THE SCANNER’S SOFTWARE/ HARDWARE
To use your n ew scanner, you m ust in­stall the supplied P aperPo rt software o n your computer then connect the scanner to the computer.
The PaperPort software in cludes instal­lation files and a User's Guide. This guide provides more detailed informa­tion about the Pape rPort softwar e's fea­tures. You can re ad the guide while th e CD is running, or print a copy directly from your hard drive to your printer. To read the guide, click

Preparation
Follow these steps to install the Paper­Port software on your computer.
1. Start Windows 98 and quit al l appli­cations.
2. Insert the PaperPort software CD into your CD-ROM drive. The CD starts automatically.
Note:
If the PaperPort CD does not start automatically, make sure the CD-ROM's door is complete ly shut. If the CD still does not start, the auto run option on your computer might be turned off. If this happens, click

3. Follow the instructions that appear. When you are prompted to do so, plug one end of t he supplied cable into your computer’s USB port.

VERIFYING SUCCESSFUL CONNECTION
After you successfully install the scanner, the scanner icon ap­pears at the bott om right c orner of the Windows taskbar. Th e in­dicator on top of the scanner turns green when the scanner and computer com­municate.
If the scanner icon ap pears with an X through it instead, the scanner is not properly conn ect­ed. See “Troubleshooting” on Page 19 for more information.
Follow these steps to confirm if the scanner has be en s uccess fully c onnec t­ed.
• The supplied cable fits only one way. If it does not insert easily, do not force it.
• Refer to your computer ’s owner’s manual for the location of the USB port.
• Some new computers also have a keyboard with a built-i n USB port. You ca n plug the sca nner’s cable into the keyboard instead of the computer.
4. Plug the other end of the supplied cable into the USB port on the back of the scanner.

USING THE SCANNER’S BUTTONS
To scan a document using the buttons on the front of the scan­ner, open the scan­ner's top cover and place the document facedown on the glass. Then close the cover and press

Note:
If you are using the scanner for the first time or if it has not warmed up yet, the scanner aut omatically warms it ­self up for about 45 seconds before
scanning. A confirmation message ap­pears while the scanner is warming up.
When the scan is complete, the scanned image is transmitte d to the preset desti­nation or a destination you select (see “Default Button Settings” on Page 10).
USING THE SCANNER ICON
Operating the scanner from the screen is just like pressing a scanner button, except you click the button on the screen. This scann ing method is espe­cially helpful if the scanner is not located close to your computer.
Follow these steps to scan using the scanner icon on the screen.
1. Open the document cover and place the object to scan fa cedown on the glass. Then close the cover.
2. Click the scanner icon on the Win­dows taskbar. The
dialog box appears.

4. When the scanner has finished scanning, it se nds the image either to the printer to print, or to another program you have loaded on your computer, depending on the cu rrent software settings.

USING THE SUPPLIED PAPERPORT SOFTWARE
Instead of using the scanne r's buttons , you can us e the suppl ied Pap erPort softw are to control your s canner. This is useful when yo u are using PaperPort to file and s av e your scanned objects.
Note:
You can also install and use other scanning software, including many graphics and imaging appl ications, with your scanner. T he software must meet Twain stan­dards.
Follow these steps to scan using the supplied PaperPort software.
1. If the PaperPort software is not currently running, double-click the PaperPort icon on the Windows desktop to start it. The PaperPort desktop appears. You can use this window to select and wor k with scanned images. The links at the bottom of the desktop let you link images you scan to other software installed on your com­puter.

lect However, scanning at a higher resolu­tion creates a larger file size and ta kes longer to scan. To minimize the file size and the time required to get a better quality scan, se lect just the area of the object that you want to scan.

modes are color, grayscale, and black and white . The sa me sym bols next to the preset options indicate their mode setting. Cl ick a mode to select it for the scan.
— This is the resolution setting
Res
for the scan in dots-per-inch (DPI). The higher the DPI, the sharper the image. But higher DP I settings also produce larger files sizes. Usually the higher resolution settings are used for precision work, such as photographs or fine artwork. Click the drop-down arrow and choose one of the resolution settings from the list.
— The page size for the image.
Size
If you want to use one of thos e pre­set sizes, click the drop -down arrow and choose the size from the list. If you want to create a custom size, click on the picture window and drag the mouse. A dotted box on the win­dow indicates the page size, and the two number boxes (with the vertic al and horizontal symbols next to them) show the act ual page size in inches. You can also enter the verti­cal and horizontal sizes in those two number boxes.
AutoCrop
— Select this op tion to let the scanner automatically determine the size of the object being scanned. For example, if you put a photo in the middle of the gl ass, the scanner will automatically determine the size of the photo. When
AutoCrop is selected, the scanner makes two passes. The first pass senses the object's size and the second pass scans the image.

ADJUSTING SCAN AND PAGE SETTINGS
If you use a scan configuration that you define yourself, you can adjust that con­figuration's scan settings and page set­tings. For example, if the scanned image is too dark, you can adjust the bright­ness of the scan setting.

Resolution
— Drag the slider to the right or left to adjust the dots per inch (DPI) of the resolution. The maximum resolution is 600 DPI, the minimum is 50 DPI. T he higher the DPI setting, the sha rper and cl earer the scanned image. However, higher DPI settings take longer to scan and produce larger files for the scanned images.
Brightness and Contrast
— Drag the sliders to the right or left to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scanned image.

Page Size
— Choose one of the page sizes from the drop- down list. The outlines on the picture repre­sent the various page sizes. Clicking on one of those outlines also selects it as the page size for the scan. If you select the
Custom
option from the drop-down list, box es appear in place of the picture. Enter the hori­zontal and vertical page dime nsions for your scan in those boxes.
AutoCrop
— Select this op tion to let the scanner automatically determine the size of the object being scanned. For example, if you put a
photo in the midd le of the g lass, the scanner will automatically determine the size of the photo. When AutoCrop is selected, the scanner makes two passes — the first pass senses the object's size, and the second pass sc ans the image. This option overrides the

selection.
DeScreen
— Select this option when scanning a picture from a newspaper or magazine article, or another object that contains images with patterns or dots. Scans of pat­terns or dots some times have a dis­torted or wavy appearance. The scanner scans the object to com­pensate for the patterns and dots, and produces a cl earer image. The scanning may s low do wn a b it whe n this option is s elec ted . Do no t s el ec t this option when scanning photo­graphs.
Gamma
— Drag the slider to improve how the colors in a scanned image look on your moni­tor. Gamma correction allows you to achieve precise color matching. Because the computer cannot always transmit the exact color information to the hardware, you may have to make some color adjustments us ing the Gamma fea­ture.
The default Gamma setting works fine in most cases and normally does not need to be adjusted.

PRE-DEFINING SCAN SETTINGS
Selecting the proper scan setting before final scanning provides the best results. The scan setting determines the sharpness of the object and the number of possible shades of gray or co lor. Scan settings also affect the spee d of the scan and the f ile size.
The following table shows the pre-defined scan settings you can use.

The scanner's

you adjust a scanned object's brightness and/or contrast as desired. For example, you can improve legibility of a black­and-white document w ritten with a light pencil by adjusting brightness to be darker. You can adjust the brightness and contrast while scanning the obj ect's grayscale and/or color. If an object is currently displayed in the preview area, the changes you mak e using the Bright ­ness and Contrast control bars are re­flected in the previewed object.
Follow these steps to adjust brightness and contrast.

Troubleshooting
If your scanner is not working as it should, these suggestions mi ght help you elimi­nate the problem. If the scanner still does not operate pr operly, take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance.
Problem Possible Cause Remedy

Care and Maintenance
Your RadioShack USB Flatbed Color Scanner is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The fol lowing suggestions will help you ca re for your scanner so you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the scanner dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids might contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the s canner only in normal temperat ure environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices and distort or melt plastic parts.
Keep the scanner a w ay fr om du st and di r t, wh ic h ca n c au se pr em atur e wear of parts.
Handle the scanner gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage circuit boards and cases and can cause the scanner to work improperly.
Wipe the scanner with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh c hemical s, c leani ng so lvents, or s trong detergen ts to clean the scanner.
Modifying or tamper ing with the scanner’s internal com ponents can cause a mal­function and mig ht invalidate its warranty. If your s canner is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance.
