If the cabinet is opened, you may be exposed to

dangerouslyhigh voltages. Never openthe cabinet

under any circumstances.

• Do Not Tou©h the Pickup Lens
The pickup- the heart ofthe DiscPlayer- islocated

inside of the disctray opening. To avoid dust
collectingon the pickup, do not leave the trayopen

for long periods.
Ifthe lens becomesdirty,clean itwith a soft brushor

usean airblowerbrush designedforcernera lenses.

• Do Not Touch the Player with Wet Hands

Do not handle the player or power cord when your
handsare wet or damp, If water or anyother liquid

enters the player cabinet, take the player to an
authorizedservice center for inspection.

The Compact Disc Player uses alaser to *mad' the

AC POWER OPERATION

Plugone end of the AC lice cordinto the AC Input
Jackon theleftsideof thecabinet,and theoppoelte
end into 120-vott AC householdoutlet. Plugging
the AC lice cord intothe setautomatically discon-

nects the batteries.

The polarized AC line plug (one blade is wider) is
a safetyfeature. Theplug fds intothe power outlet

only one way. Ifthe plug doesn't go intothe outlet
completely, tum the plugover andputit intheother

way.If itstilldoesn'tfit, contact a qualifiedeleclzJcian
to change the outlet. Do not defeat the safety

purpose of the polarized plug.
NOTE: Disconnectthe AC line cord from the unit

for batteW operation.

BATTERY INSTALLATION

• Unlatch and remove the compartment door

located on the cabinet back.

• Insert6 "D'-size betteriesintobattery compart-
ment Be surethe (+)or cap and ofeach bettery

is installed as shown on the battery diagram.

• Replace battery compartment door.

NOTE: This unitwill notoperate on battery power
unlessAC lice cordis disconnectedas wellas from

the AC outlet.

CD operationrequires more power than Tape

operationand Tapeoperationrequiresmorepower
than Radio operation;therefore,you may continue
to use the same batteries for a while longer by

switchingto a function requiringlesspower.

The POWER INDICATORwilllightindicatingPower

"ON" when the FUNCTION switch isin the RADIO

or the DISC position.If the FUNCTION switch is in
TAPE position, the INDICATOR will light when a
TAPE operationbutton isactivated.
When operatingthe unit onbattery power, the
brightnesslevelof the INDICATORindicatesbattery

level.If the INDICATOR is dim (ordoes not light)

the batteriesare weak and need replacing.

The Speakers can be usedattached to the unitor,
to enhance the stereo effect, separated from the
center section.

To Connect the Speaker Cords:
Connect the right speaker wires to the red and

black speakerterminals(on the back of the center

section)markedR (right),and the leftspeakerwires
to the terminalsmarked L (left).(The red wiregoes

to the red terminal.)
To Detach the Speakers:

1. Disconnectthe speaker cords from the center

section's speaker terminals.

2. Pushinwardon theReleasesatthe bottomside
edges at the back of the canter section.

To facilitatespeaker removal:

• Push inwardon the Releaseand simulta-

neously liftthe speaker slightlyto clear
the catch.

3. Then, slidethe speakers up and offthe center
section.

4. Place speakers indesired location, unwrap
required cordlength from cord wraps and re-

connect speaker cords as indicated above.

To Re-Attach Speakers:

1. Alignthepast onthe sideofthespeakercabinets
with the channelson the sides of the center

section and slidethe speakersdown untilthey

lock in place.

2. Wrap any excessspeaker cord onto the cord

wrap onthe back of each speaker.

NOTE: For good sound reproduction, place the

speakers at ear level,at leastsevenfeet apart and
facingyou. Placingthe speakersclose to wallswill

accentuatethebassresponse.Toeliminatethiseffect,

keepthe speakerstwo orthreefeet fromwallareas.

1. Slide FUNCTION switchto RADIO.

• The Power "ON" indicatorwill light.

2. Set BAND Switch todesired broadcastband -

AM or FM.

3. Use TUNING knobto select a station.

4. Adjust VOLUME controlto your listening

preference.

5. To tum the radiooff, slide FUNCTION switchto
TAPE(Radio Off).

When tuned to FM, stations broadcastinginstereo
will be heard in stereo and those broadcasting in

mona willbe heardinmona.

AM Antenna - The AM antenna, built intothe unit,

issomewhat directional. On weak station•, it may
be necessaryto rotate the unit for best reception.

(Thewhip antenna isnot usedfor AM reception.)
FM Antenna - Liftand extendthetelescopingwhip

antenna. It maybe necessaryto adjust the length.
and directionof the antenna for best FM reception.

NOTE: Toavoiddamagingthe whipantenna,always
lower the antenna one section at a time, starting

withthelargestdiametersection.Do notpush down
fromthetopoftheantennasincebucklingorbending
is possible.

The Automatic Frequency Control works only on

FM. Ithelps to keepthe radiolocked on the station

to which it istuned.

When tuningin stations,you may noticethat often

the FM station you desire can be heard on two or
three nearbypointsonthe dial.Alwaystunecarefully

to the loudestand clearest point.

The stereo soundof a radioprogram,tape cassette
or compact disc can be made to expand spatially

so that it takes on the feel of a live performance.

play.

* The "Surround"sot_ndeffectcannotbe recorded.

When operating your unit at a low-volume level,
scme ofthe bc_sfrequencies maynotbe discernible.
To give a boost to these frequencies and enhance
yourlow volumelisteningenjoyment, bassamplifier

circuit has been added to your unit.
When listening to music or whenever maximum

audio fidelity is desired, pressthe BASS BOOST

button to switch BASSBOOST "ON" to bringout

the bass frequencies.

The Headphone Jack on the front of the unit is for

optional stereo headphones, such as Cat. No. 3-

5750. Use of the headphone• permit• private
listening(monitoring)of material duringPLAYand
RECORD operations.

Toorder the above headphone, use the Accessory
Order Form included inthis Guide.

INSERTING A DISC

1. Slide FUNCTION switch to DISC position.

• POWER INDICATOR lights.

2. PRESS the "OPEN" button to open the Disc

CompartmenL

• A flashing "cd" will appear in the DISPLAY.

3. Withouttouching the discsurface, placethe

disc in the compartment wIththe labelfacing
up.

4. Toclose the Disc Compartment door,press

down on door untildoor latches.

CAUTION: To avoid damage to the disc or disc
mechanism, be sure disc is properlyseated in the
disc tray before closing disc door.

NOTE: Both 3" and 5" discswith the identification

logoshown below can be played inthis player.

DISC PLAY

1. After the disc isinstalledandthe compartment
door closed, the disc will begin to spin and

the player will scanthe table of contentsen-
coded inthe lead-in portionof the disc.

• Duringthis time, *cd" willflash inthe display.

2. After the table ofcontents areread, the disc will

stop spinning.

• "cd" will remain in the DISPLAY but will

stop fleshing.

3. Pressthe PLAY/PAUSEloutton.Thefirstselection
(track) on the disc will begin to play.

4. At the beginningof disc play, adjustVOLUME
to suit your listening preference.

5. Switch BASSBOOST and SURROUND "ON" if
desired.

6. At the end of disc play:

+ The player will stop automatically.

• The dash willbe displayed.

7. Open the DiscCompartment, removethe disc,

close the Compartment door,and slide

FUNCTION switchto TAPE power Off).

To terminatedisc play beforethe end of the discis

reached, pressthe STOP button.

PAUSE FUNCTION

Youcantemporarilystop disc p_ayduringoperation
bypressingthe PLAY/PAUSEbutto_ asecondtime.

• When PAUSEis activated, the Tracknumber
in play willflesh.

To resume play, pressPLAY/PAUSE again.

SKIP/SEARCH BUTI'ONS

During disc PLAYand STOP modes, you can skip
forward or backward to the beginning of any
selection on the disc by usingthe SKIP buttons.

FORWARD SKIP (IH_)
Momentarily press the FORWARD SKIP/SEARCH

button to instantly moveto the beginningof the

next selection onthe disc. To"skip" to a selection

further down the disc,repeatedlypressand releese
the button untilthe desiredTrack Number appears

in the DISPLAY.Whenthe lastselection onthe disc
is reached, skip willreturnto the beginningof the

first Track onthe disc.

FORWARD SEARCH (IH_)
DuringDisc PLAY,pressingand holding the FOR-

WARD SKIP/SEARCH button enables youto speed

up disc play(fastforward).The discmaterialwillbe
audible,allowing youto scan fora favoritesegment

or skipa segment. Releasethe buttonand normal
PLAYresumes.

REVERSE SKIP (_)
Momentarily press the REVERSE SKIP/SEARCH

button to instantly move to the beginning of the
Trackbeingplayed.To "skip"backwardto a selection

further upthe disc, repeatedly pressand release
the button untilthe desiredTrack Numberappears

inthe Display.

When the beginningof the firstTrackon the disc is
reached, skipwill go back to the beginningof the

lest Trackon the disc.

REVERSE SEARCH ( <k< )
During Disc PLAY, pressing and holding the

REVERSE SKIP/SEARCH button enables you to
move quickly backward. The disc material will be

heard in reverse play, enabling you to select a
segmentto be listened to again. Releasethe button

and normalPLAYwill resume.
You can also use SKIP when disc play is in the

PAUSEmode. UponcompletionofSKIP,the player
will returnto the PAUSEmode.

REPEAT BUTTON

Press the REPEAT button for repeated play of all
Tracks on the disc.

• The REPEATINDICATORwill lightwhen
REPEATmode is activated.

PressingREPEATbutton againcancelsRepeat play
and normal play resumesfrom the Trackcurrently

in play.

SHUFFLE BUTTON

Press the SHUFFLE button and then the PLAY
button for automatic random play of allthe Tracks

on the disc.

• The SHUFFLE INDICATOR will lightwhen
SHUFFLE mode is activated.

• Randomsegments ofthe DISPLAYwill flesh

whileSHUFFLE selects the track for play.

PressingSHUFFLE again cancelsShuffle play and

normal play resumes from the Track currently in
play.
