Compatible discs

This DVD Player is capable of playing
the following types of discs:
DVDs, Audio CDs, Video CDs, and CDs
with mp3 files, WMA files (Windows
Media Audio), and JPEG files on them.
Before you put a disc in the player,
make sure it is compatible.

You cannot play the following types of
discs: Laserdiscs, CD-I, CD-ROM
(computer-only discs), DVD-ROM, or
discs recorded using other broadcast
standards (i.e., PAL or SECAM); CD-G
discs.

Note: Some discs may not be compatible
due to laser pickup, recording formats,
and software used. Some technologies
and methods used for mp3 file
recording on CD-Rs can prevent optimal
playback of these files on your DVD
player by degrading the sound quality
and/or the ability of the player to read
the file.

•To use your new DVD player, you must connect the unit to the TV with the
supplied Audio/Video cables (color coded red, white and yellow).

•Whenever you are connecting your system cables, turn off the
power and make certain that the power cord has been removed
from the wall outlet.

• If your television set only has one audio socket connect it to the
DVD player’s left socket (white).

• If your TV does not have Audio and Video Input Jacks and only has
an RF jack, you need to connect an RF modulator (not provided).

Other connection options

There are several ways in which you can
incorporate your unit into an audio/
video system. This depends on the
sockets and other appliances you have.
Sound and image quality depend to a
large extent on the types of connections
used.

1. HDMI (High-Definition
Multimedia Interface) (video and
audio outputs)

The HDMI jack provides optimum
picture quality. This jack gives you
an uncompressed digital interface
that carries both video and audio
data by way of an integrated mini­plug cable.

•Make sure you set the HDMI Setup
option in the menu system to the
resolution setting that most closely
matches your TV.

2. Coaxial/optical digital audio
output

Use one of these jacks to connect
your DVD player to a Dolby Digital
receiver or decoder. Some receivers
have either the Coaxial or Optical
type of digital audio input jack and
some have both. Under most
conditions, coaxial and optical
connections work equally well – the
only difference is the type of cable
you connect to the jack.

• If the unit is connected to a DTS
receiver through DIGITAL OUT and
DTS track is selected, there will be
no sound.

• When connecting the optical audio
digital cable, remove the protection
cap from the connector and connect
it firmly. Keep the protection cap
and always reattach the cap when
the connector is not in use, to keep
it dustfree.

3. Component video outputs (Y,
Pb, Pr) (YUV)

The Y, Pb, Pr sockets deliver an
optimum image quality due to the
separation of the video signal into
three separate components. To
obtain the best image quality
possible, use very high quality cables
for connections. Your dealer can
provide YUV cables that are sold
together and come in the standard
color codes (red, green and blue)
used for these types of sockets and
cables.

• If you use the Component sockets Y,
Pb, Pr (also called YUV), you must
configure the output video signal so
that these sockets deliver either an
interlaced YUV signal (component
interlaced) or a progressive PS signal
(component progressive) (refer to
the Video setup menu). Do not
forget to also connect the audio
cables, because Component cables
only transmit images, and not
sound.

4. S-Video output

The S-Video jack provides better
picture quality than a video jack
(sometimes labeled VIDEO and
color-coded yellow on TVs) because
S-Video keeps the color part of the
picture separate from the black and
white part of the picture. An S­Video cable is required for
connection with a TV.

• Remember to connect the left and
right audio cables or coaxial audio
cable because S-Video cable carries
only the picture signal, not the
sound.

Display

Disc tray status shows on the top left of the display. Disc icon lights when correspond­ing disc tray is loaded, and flashes for the current disc tray.

Remote control

Insert two AA batteries, matching the polarity inside
the battery compartment.

• Do not mix different types of batteries or new and
old batteries.

• Do not use rechargeable batteries.

• Dispose of batteries in the proper manner,
according to federal, state, and local regulations.

0 - 9 Numeric input buttons. Numeric buttons 1-5 also

select the disc to play in the corresponding disc tray.

Basic playback

Loading discs

Up to 5 discs can be loaded into the
unit. You can load any kind of
compatible disc in any combination
(DVDs, CDs, VCDs). The unit will read
the data on the disc and play it
accordingly.

1. Press

DISC 1/2/3/4/5 on the unit
to open the desired disc tray (For
example, press DISC 1 to open
disc tray 1).

2. Place a disc gently onto the tray
with the disc’s label facing up.

3. When you’re finished loading the
disc, press DISC 1/2/3/4/5 to close
the disc tray (For example, press

DISC 1 to close disc tray 1).

4. Repeat steps 1-3 to load discs in the
other disc trays.

Basic playback

1. Turn on the TV and tune to its
video input channel, if necessary.

2. After a disc is loaded (refer to the
above section). Playback starts
automatically. If a disc menu
appears, one of its options can be
selected to start playing the disc.
Highlight it with and press
OK.

3. Press STOP to stop the playback.
The unit remembers the point
where the disc was stopped. If you
press PLAY, playback resumes from
this point. To stop playback
completely or to start again from
the beginning, press STOP twice.

• If the unit is left in the stop mode
for more than five minutes without
any user interaction, the screen
saver will activate.

• If the playback is completely
stopped for more than 30 minutes
without any user interaction, the
unit will turn off automatically.

4. To play the disc loaded in another
disc tray during playback, press 1, 2,
3, 4 or 5 (numeric buttons) on the
remote control to select the
corresponding disc tray. If the
selected tray is empty, there will be
no response.

Play and load simultaneously

1. Press DISC 1/2/3/4/5 to open a
disc tray while a disc is playing in
another disc tray.

2. Load or change discs.

3. Press DISC 1/2/3/4/5 again to
close the tray.

Advanced playbackGeneral controls

Accelerated play

During playback, press REVERSE or
FORWARD one or more times to vary
the speed and direction of the
accelerated play. Press PLAY to resume
the normal playback.

Pause

During playback, press PAUSE once to
freeze frame. Press PLAY to resume the
normal playback.

Frame advance

1. During playback, press PAUSE twice.
FRAME is displayed.

2. Press FORWARD to move forward
one frame at a time.

3. Press PLAY to resume the normal
playback.

Slow motion

1. During playback, press PAUSE once.
PAUSE is displayed.

2. Press REVERSE (except VCD) or
FORWARD a number of times to
vary the speed.

3. Press PLAY to resume the normal
playback.

Changing chapter/track

During playback, press SKIP / to
go immediately to the previous or next
chapter, or to the previous or next track.

Repeat playback

During playback, press REPEAT
repeatedly to select a repeat playback
mode:

• For DVDs: Off, Chapter repeat, Title
repeat

• For CDs: All tracks repeat, Track
repeat

A-B repeat playback

1. To repeat a segment between two
points (A and B), press A-B at the
beginning of the segment you want
to repeat during playback.

2. Allow the disc to play to the end of
the segment or press FORWARD to
advance to the end point (B).

3. Press A-B at the end of the
segment. The segment plays
repeatedly.

4. Press A-B once more to resume the
normal playback.

Random playback (audio CD,
mp3/wma disc)

1. Press RANDOM after loading a disc.
The random playback will start until
all the tracks on the current disc
have been randomly played.

2. Press RANDOM to cancel the
random mode.

Advanced playback

Program playback

To program the playback order of a
disc:

1. When playback is stopped, press
PROGRAM. The Program menu
appears.

2. Press the numeric input buttons to
enter the title and/or chapter
number (for DVD), folder and track
number (for mp3/wma or jpeg disc)
or track number (for VCD and
Audio CD). Press
another input space.

3. Repeat step 2 as often as necessary.

4. Press
then press OK. Items are played in
the order of the program list.
Playback stops once all items have
been played.

5. Press STOP to stop the program
playback.

•The program list remains until the
disc is removed from the player.
Press PROGRAM to review the
items in the program list during the
program playback.

• Some discs have several audio or
subtitle settings for different
languages or different audio
formats.

•To change the audio or subtitle
setting during playback, press
AUDIO (for audio) or SUBTITLE (for
subtitle) to select one of the
available setting. This option is only
available if the disc offers a number
of audio or subtitle settings.

• For VCD playback, press AUDIO for
audio channel selection: mono left,
mono right or stereo.

Angle setting (DVD)

Press ANGLE repeatedly to select the
angle setting (if available on the DVD
disc).

Zoom (DVD, VCD & jpeg disc)

1. During playback, press ZOOM. Each
time the button is pressed, the
picture is further zoomed in or out
while stepping through all the
zoom levels and return to normal
picture size.

2. To see other parts of the picture
while the picture is zoomed in,
press
selected direction.

Bookmark

Mark a point on the disc for starting
playback quickly from that location. The
bookmarks are stored as long as the disc
remains in the unit and the unit remains
turned on.

1. Press BOOKMARK to show the
bookmark menu during playback.

2. Press to select a free bookmark
and then press OK to create a
bookmark at the point you press
OK.

3. Repeat step 2 to create more
bookmarks.

4. Press to select a created
bookmark and then press PLAY to
start playback of the selected
bookmark.

5. Press to select an unwanted
bookmark and then press CLEAR to
clear the unwanted bookmark.

Preview

The preview feature shows the summary
of the disc content on the screen.`

1. During playback, press PREVIEW to
display the summary of the current
title (DVD) or current track (VCD) as
9 thumbnails.

• If PREVIEW is pressed when the
playback is stopped, only the first
title (DVD) or track (VCD) of the disc
can be previewed.

• For VCD, press SKIP / to
select the previous or next track for
preview.

•To exit the preview menu, press
PREVIEW again.

2. Input the thumbnail number with
the numeric input buttons and then
press OK to start playback from the
selected part of the disc.

Introscan (audio CDs)

Press PREVIEW to start listening to the
first few seconds of each track on an
audio CD. Press the button again to
cancel the function.

Accessing disc menu

At anytime during playback, press DISC

MENU to access the DVD’s menu. Press
TITLE MENU to access DVD’s title menu

(if available).

Accessing PBC menu (VCD)

• Press TITLE MENU to access the PBC
menu if it is available.

• Press DISC MENU repeatedly to
select the PBC mode (if available on
the disc) on or off.

Advanced playback

Information display

The information display appears across
the top of the screen when you press
DISPLAY during playback. Press the
button repeatedly to cycle among the
playback information.

The current status or setting on the
information display can be changed
while reviewing:

Title, chapter, track, time display:

When the information display is shown,
press OK and then to highlight the
desired item. Enter with the numeric
input buttons the desired title, chapter,
track or time value and then press OK
to go directly to the selected title,
chapter, track or time.

Audio language, subtitles, camera
angle, play mode:

Press to highlight the desired item
on the information display and then
press to select the desired setting.

Bookmark:

Press to highlight bookmark on the
information display and then press OK
to access the bookmark menu. Refer to
the bookmark section in the user
manual for details.

Sleep timer:

Press to highlight sleep timer on the
information display and then press OK
to select the time before the unit turns
off automatically.

HDMI

HDMI output

If your TV or display device has a HDMI
input, you may use the HDMI interface
output for the best quality picture. The
HDMI connection transfers both the
video and audio streams as digital data
to your TV.

Make sure you set the HDMI setup
options in the player menu to best
match your TV. See “HDMI Setup” and
“HDMI Audio” under “General Setup
Menu” for details.

Press HDMI to select the output
resolution that matches your TV.

Connecting TV with DVI
input

Please get a HDMI to DVI cable (not
supplied) to connect your unit to a TV
or monitor with a DVI input jack.

Since DVI connections do not
carry audio, you will need to

connect the unit’s AUDIO
OUT jacks to your TV’s audio input
jacks. You can also use one of the
digital audio output jacks to connect
the unit to an audio receiver with
digital input jacks.

mp3, wma & jpeg files

•mp3/WMA is an audio file format
which compresses recorded music.
The main advantage of the mp3/
WMA format is that CD-quality
music tracks can be stored on a
personal computer in user friendly
compressed files.

• jpeg files are image files. Make sure
that they have a resolution of less
than 2 megapixels.

Playback

Before inserting a disc, check that it is
compatible with the unit.

1. The folders on the disc will be listed
in numerical order on the left side
of the screen. When you highlight a
folder, the list of songs or pictures
in the folder are listed in numerical
order on the right side of the

screen. Press to select a folder
and then OK to see the folder’s
contents.

•mp3/WMA file: the unit begins
playing the selected file, then all

selected, then displays all the jpeg

in the same folder. You can set the
amount of time a picture remains
on the screen in the General Setup
menu.

• During playback, press SKIP /
to go to the previous or next file.

3. Press STOP to stop the playback.

4. To go back to the folder list, press

Repeat playback

While the disc is playing, press REPEAT
repeatedly to select a repeat playback
mode:

• Repeat One, Repeat Directory,
Repeat All, Repeat Off.

• mp3/WMA files and jpeg
files cannot playback
simultaneously.

• The time taken for the
contents of the disc to be displayed
varies according to the size and
number of jpeg files on the disc. If
nothing is displayed after a few
minutes, the file sizes may be too
large. Reduce the files’ resolution
and write another disc.

DivX files

•Your player is an Official DivX

DivX subtitles

In order to display proper subtitles in
some Eastern European languages, you
need to select the correct character set.

During DivX file playback, press
TITLE MENU repeatedly to choose a
character set: Czech, Slovak, Hungarian,
Polish or Default (for Western European
languages).

To rent (purchase) DivX®VOD
files

DivX VOD files are downloaded after
paying a rental from certain commercial
websites. Prior to downloading a VOD
you need to input the registration
number of your DVD player on the
purchase form on the site.

Go to the DIV[X] VOD menu under the
General Setup menu to check the
number. Write down this VOD 8­character registration number so that
you can fill in the form on the website
you purchase your DivX VOD files from.

If you cannot play a DivX
VOD file recorded on a CD­R disc after downloading it,

the rental period allocated
during purchasing from the
website may have expired. It is also
possible that the recorded file is
not compatible with your player
because of different versions or
incorrect download
parameters.The parameters used
when copying to CD-R may be
another reason for this. Since it is
not possible here to supply all the
information, parameters and
advice relating to the use of DivX
VOD files, we recommend that you
visit specialist websites such as
www.divx.com/vod.

Ratings

•Rating feature disables playback of
certain DVDs based on their ratings
from 1 (most restrictive) to 8 (least
restrictive). DVDs that are rated
above the level you set will not play
until the correct password is
entered.

• If a password has been set, you
cannot change the rating without
entering the correct password.

To change the rating level:

1. Press to select the rating level.

2. Press OK and then enter the four­digit password and then press OK.

Slide time

To define the viewing time for each
jpeg picture during a slideshow.

HDMI output

To change the HDMI output resolution
that best matches your TV. Refer to your
TV user manual on the highest
resolution your TV supports.

HDMI audio

To change the HDMI audio mode. Select
“SPDIF” if your TV systems is with built­in 5.1 channel digital audio decorder or
“PCM” if your TV supports 2 channel
digital audio output.

Discs are created differently.
The DVD player cannot
override some language

preferences. If a disc’s
software was created to play the
movie (title) in a perferred
language, the preference you set
might be ignored. Also, if the
language is not available on the
disc you are playing, the disc’s
default language will be chosen. If
the disc was not created with
subtitles, you won’t be able to use
the subtitle feature.

To monitor the audio track and control
the different sound levels via dynamic
compression. It minimizes sudden
volume increases such as when a
commercial starts.

Video

To select the video format:

• Select “Interlace YUV” if your TV
uses the traditional technology
known as interlace scan.

• Select “PSCAN YPbPr” if your TV has
progressive scan and you have
connected the COMPONENT OUT
jacks to the COMPONENT IN jacks of
the TV. Progressive scan gives you a
sharper, cleaner picture.
Once progressive scan has been
activated, the picture will only be
visible on a progressive scan TV or
monitor. If you have chosen this
option but do not have a
progressive scan TV or monitor, a
picture with incorrect color or no
color may result. Press and hold
CH+ on the front panel. The video
output will be restored to the
standard setting and picture will
once again be visible on a
conventional analog TV or monitor.

• Select “S-Video” if you have made
the S-video output connection with
your TV.

TVG

TV type

To choose a display option that affects
how a disc’s content appears on your TV
screen.

• 4:3 PS (4:3 Standard) reproduces a
4:3 picture with some distortion.

• 4:3 LB (4:3 Letterbox) gives best
reproduction of pictures recorded in
this format (i.e., with horizontal
bands at the top and bottom of the
screen).

• 16:9 (16:9 Widescreen) reproduces
16:9 format films in full, on a 16:9
screen.

Brightness

To adjust the video brightness level on a
scale of 0 to 12.

Contrast

To adjust the video contrast level on a
scale of 0 to 12.

Hue

To adjust the color hue level on a scale
of -6 to +6.

Saturation

To adjust the color saturation level on a
scale of 0 to 12

TV Guardian (TVG) filters out
objectionable language by monitoring
the closed captioning (CC) information
contained on the DVD.
It also offers various levels of filtering
and is easily adjustable with simple on­screen menus.

TV Guardian service provided by
Principle Solutions. Service sold
separately.

Activating TVG

1. Power on the unit, the following
dialog shows, “Start using your
TVGuardian foul language filter
today! Press SETUP and select
TVGuardian to enable filter.” This
message will be displayed five times.

2. Press SETUP, select “TVG” and then
press OK. A registration menu
appears. After purchasing the TVG
license, you will be provided with a
5-digit activation code. Input the
activation code in this setup menu
with the numeric input buttons on
the remote control. Press OK to
confirm. When activation is
successful, a message “TVG
ACTIVATED...” shows at the bottom

TVGUARDIAN

of the menu. After you have
activated TVG, more settings can be
defined.

TVG Mode

You can select various levels of offensive
language filtering.

•Off: no filtering

•Tolerant: filters only the most
offensive foul language

•Moderate: increased standards for
language filtering

• Strict: filters out all common
offensive language

Word Subset Filtering

In addition to the main TV Guardian
Modes listed above, you can turn
certain word subsets on or off according
to your preferences.

• Hell/Damn: filters out variations of
“Damn” and “Hell”.

• Religious: filters out reference to
deity. (To watch religious
programming, turn this word subset
off)

• Sexual: filters sexually explicit
language.

CC Mode

•Off

• On Mute (Default): Captions are
displayed when audio is muted.

• Continuous: Captions are displayed
continuously.

Player menus

CC Channel

To use the TVG captioning features
while watching a DVD Movie, your
television must be capable of displaying
closed captions. Make sure that your TV
CC is set to “CC1” or “CC2” (Close
caption on channel 1 or 2), and that the
CC channel on your DVD player is set to
“CC1” or “CC2” respectively (CC2 is the
default setting)

Troubleshooting tips

You can correct most problems you have
with your product by consulting the
Troubleshooting list that follows.

Player won’t work or no power

•Try unplugging the AC power cord,
wait two minutes, and plug it back
in.

The remote control does not work

•Remember to point the remote
control at the front of your player
(towards the infrared remote
sensor). Make sure there are no
objects between the remote and the
player.

•Maybe the batteries in the remote
are weak, dead, or installed
incorrectly. Replace the batteries
and make sure the polarity of the
terminals (+ and –) is correct.

• Operate the remote control at a
distance of no more than 20 feet.

TVG help

Select this option and press OK to enter
the Setup Help of TVG Menu to look for
more information on TV Channel
Selection and TVG Website address.
Press OK to exit this option.

Disc won’t play

• Insert a disc with the label side
facing up.

• Check the type of disc you put into
the disc tray. Refer to Compatible
Disc section.

•Make sure the regional code of the
disc is Region No.1.

Forgot password

• Enter 9688 in the password menu to
clear the memory. Keep this master
password out of the reach of
children. Refer to “General Setup”
for details.

Lock/Unlock DVD player

•When playback is stopped, press and
hold STOP on the unit’s front and
then press MENU on the remote
control.

Troubleshooting tips

Play starts, but then stops
immediately

• The disc is dirty. Clean it.

• Condensation has formed. Allow
player to dry out.

Picture format does not match the
screen format.

• The picture format is adjustable,
refer to the GENERAL SETUP menu
section. Some discs dictate the
format, in which case no adjustment
is possible.

Picture is distorted

• The disc might be damaged. Try
another disc.

•When using the FORWARD or
REVERSE buttons, it is normal for
some distortion while scanning.

•Make sure you’ve selected the
correct option for the VIDEO OUT
feature.

Sound problems

• If a TV is used, check whether the
sound is muted or turned down
low.

•You may need to readjust the
settings in the AUDIO menu.

•Sound is muted during still, frame
advance, or slow-motion play.

Menu problems

•With a DVD: the disc menus are not
displayed in your language. Read
the disc jacket to see what
languages are available on that disc.
Choose one that suits you, if
possible.

•With a DVD: there are no subtitles.
Read the disc jacket to see if
subtitles are available on that disc.
Choose subtitles in a language that
suits you if possible.

• If the player’s setup menus are not
displayed in the language you want,
check that your language is among
those listed in the menu language
menu. If necessary, choose another
language.

“INVALID KEY” appears on the
screen

• The action cannot be completed at
this time for one of the following
reasons: the disc’s software restricts
it; the disc’s software doesn’t
support that feature (e.g., angles);
the feature is not available at the
moment; you’ve requested a title or
chapter number that is out of
range.

Ratings problems

• If you forget your password, go to
“Forget Password” information in
this section.

• The default language for dialogs
and subtitles may be preset by the
DVD.

Handling and caring for discs

• Handle your discs with care. Hold
the disc with your fingers at the
edges or through the hole.

• Insert the disc with the label facing
up (for a single-sided disc).

• Place the disc properly into the tray
in the allotted holder.

• Use a soft cloth to clean discs if
necessary, always wiping from the
centre to the edge.

• Always put discs back in their cases
after use and store in a vertical
position.

• Do not close the tray with two discs
in it or with a disc not sitting
correctly in the holder.

• Do not play cracked, chipped or
warped discs nor try to repair them
with adhesive tape or glue.

• Do not write on a disc.

• Do not move the player when a disc
is being played.

• Do not scratch discs or store them
in places exposed to direct sunlight,
high humidity or high
temperatures.

• Do not use aerosol cleaners,
benzene, anti-static liquids or any
other solvent for cleaning discs.
When cleaning, wipe gently with a
soft damp (water only) cloth from
the centre to the edge, avoiding
circular motions, which could cause
scratches and interference during
playback.

• Use a soft, dry, clean cloth.
Regularly dust the vents at the back
or sides.

• Using solvents, abrasive or alcohol­based products risks damaging the
appliance.

Limited warranty (US)

What your warranty covers:

• Defects in materials or

• 90 days from date of purchase –
Unit exchange, which includes parts
and labor.

• 91 days to 1 year from date of
purchase – Unit exchange, which
