Warnings and Safeguards
Using Your Receiver WhILE Driving
Your safety and the safety of others on the road are very important to us. You should be able to safely operate and enjoy your receiver while driving, but use caution. Keep in mind that it is dangerous (and illegal in some areas) to use headsets while driving.
Using Your Receiver in a Plane
The Command Audio Receiver contains an FM receiver and a low power FM transmitter that can interfere with aircraft navigation systems if not properly handled. You must turn off the Command Audio receiver before boarding an aircraft. To allow for safe air navigation and to comply with requirements of the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), you must NOT turn the unit on or use it while in an aircraft (whether on the ground or in the air) unless you follow the instructions provided by crew members regarding the use of portable electronic devices.
You can still listen to stored Command Audio programming while in an aircraft. (Command Audio has a special “play only” mode.)
Safely Using Headsets
To safely use a headset, please keep the following in mind:
• Do not play your headset at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous extended play.
• If you experience a ringing in your ears, turn down the sound or stop using the headset.
• Do not use a headset while driving a car or riding a bike. This may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas.
• Use extreme caution or do not use headsets in potentially hazardous situations.
• Even if your headset is an open-air type designed to let you hear outside sounds, don’t turn up the volume so high that you can’t hear what’s around you.
How you get service:
Call 1-800-755-4570 and have your unit’s activation code and model/serial number ready. The activation code and model/serial number information is on the bottom of your receiver.

Welcome to Command Audio!
What If I Travel Out of Range of the Signal?
Your RCA CA1000 receiver is designed for discriminating users who wish to gather, customize, and listen to a broad range of information never before available from a single source. Whether it’s news, sports, weather, or lifestyle programming, information is at your command at the press of a button, once information is stored and updated.
Please glance at the following questions and answers to familiarize yourself with the Command Audio Service.
How are Programs Updated?
Your receiver is constantly updating and storing new programs, even while you are listening to it. This means that you don’t have to worry about missing new programs while listening to other programs. The information will be there when you are ready to listen to it.
Different programs are updated according to different schedules. Your Program Guide (located in a pocket of the Quick Start Guide) will tell you when new information is gathered for the programs that you wish to listen to.
The Command Audio Service is available in various cities throughout the United States. If you travel out of range of the Command Audio signal, (or if you set the reception switch to “OFF,”) the receiver will stop updating your programs. You will, however, be able to play the existing programs from your receiver’s memory. Once you return to any Command Audio Service area, and it is getting power, your receiver will be able to update your programs.
IMPORTANT: If you missed receiving a scheduled update due to being out of signal range or loss of power, you will not receive a new update until the next scheduled time period. (For example if you typically get an update every evening and missed this evening’s update due to loss of signal or power, then you will not get the next update until tomorrow evening.)

Before You Begin
Activating Your Receiver
There are a few things you should know before you plug in and enjoy your receiver.
Your receiver is constantly updating and storing
new programs, even while you are listening to it.
This means that you don’t have to worry about missing new programs while listening to other programs. The information will be there when you are ready to listen to it.
• The receiver is constantly recharging its batteries when it is plugged into a wall outlet or car lighter.
Command Audio recommends to always use an AC/ DC power source. The batteries are provided as a convenience, for those situations when an alternative power source is not readily available. We recommend using your batteries primarily as a backup power source.
• When you are NOT listening to the receiver:
—always leave it plugged into a power source when
possible.
—always slide the switch to ON or STANDBY so that
the receiver can gather and store new programs. If you switch the receiver to OFF, it will NOT receive and update programs.
Your receiver is pre-set at the factory to begin capturing our most popular programs for a 24-hour period from the first time you turn the power on. In order to continue receiving updates of programs after that 24-hour period, you must activate your receiver with Command Audio.
To activate your receiver:
1.Dial the Toll-Free Activation phone number printed on the sticker on your unit. 1.800.264.7289
2.Please have your receiver and credit card ready for Listener Care.
Once you have activated, please peel off the sticker.
Your receiver is programmed at the factory with various program examples, but in order to receive continuous updates of programs, you must activate your receiver with Command Audio.

Connecting the Power
There are three ways to connect your receiver to power.
• Using an AC power source
• Using a car’s lighter plug for DC power
• Using the batteries
Using an AC power source
To use the AC power adapter, plug the receiver into a wall outlet:
1.Plug one end of the AC adapter into the receiver.
2.Plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
Using a car’s lighter plug for DC power
To learn how to connect the power in your car, please see page 23 in Chapter 5, “Using the Receiver in Your Car.”
Using the batteries
Your receiver comes with four rechargeable Alkaline batteries. You can also use standard batteries. The rechargeable batteries will power your receiver for a limited time (up to 2-6 hours) before requiring recharging, depending on previous battery usage. Standard batteries will last up to eight hours.
To install the batteries:
1.Remove the battery cover.
2.Put the batteries in, from left to right, making sure that the (+) and (-) are the same as the diagram in the compartment.
3.Slide the battery cover back on.
8
CA 1000 gw new 11/2/99, 1:29 PM8
Note: The receiver will not work if the batteries are
incorrectly installed. Rechargable batteries can take up to 7 hours to fully recharge.
Low BATTERY Indicator
Turning the Receiver ON
When the batteries are low, the receiver will sound an alert signal, and the low battery indicator (red) light on the front panel will blink.
Note:
• We recommend using alkaline or rechargeable batteries.
• Rechargeable batteries may result in shorter playing time.
• Remove batteries if storing the receiver for a month or more to avoid leakage.
• Dispose of batteries in the proper manner, according to federal, state and local regulations.
• Any battery may leak electrolyte if mixed with a different battery type; if inserted incorrectly; if all batteries are not replaced at the same time; if disposed of in a fire; or if an attempt is made to charge a battery not intended to be recharged.
• Discard leaky batteries immediately to avoid possible skin burns or other personal injury.
To turn the receiver on:
1.Slide the POWER switch on the right-hand side of the receiver to ON.
2.Adjust the Volume control, located beneath the Power switch.
3.Listen to the two minute greeting from Command Audio.
When finished, please familiarize yourself with the various controls and features explained in the next chapter.

Chapter 2: Getting to Know Your Receiver
This chapter will help familiarize you with the various controls. You will find that the controls operate very much like a Compact Disc (CD) player and other devices you may have used in the past. For example, buttons such as NEXT, PREV (Previous), and PLAY operate just like a CD.
