Warnings and Safeguards
Using Your Receiver WhILE Driving
Your safety and the safety of others on the road are very important to us. You should be able to safely operate and enjoy your receiver while driving, but use caution. Keep in mind that it is dangerous (and illegal in some areas) to use headsets while driving.
Using Your Receiver in a Plane
The Command Audio Receiver contains an FM receiver and a low power FM transmitter that can interfere with aircraft navigation systems if not properly handled. You must turn off the Command Audio receiver before boarding an aircraft. To allow for safe air navigation and to comply with requirements of the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA), you must NOT turn the unit on or use it while in an aircraft (whether on the ground or in the air) unless you follow the instructions provided by crew members regarding the use of portable electronic devices.
You can still listen to stored Command Audio programming while in an aircraft. (Command Audio has a special “play only” mode.)
Safely Using Headsets
To safely use a headset, please keep the following in mind:
• Do not play your headset at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous extended play.
• If you experience a ringing in your ears, turn down the sound or stop using the headset.
• Do not use a headset while driving a car or riding a bike. This may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas.
• Use extreme caution or do not use headsets in potentially hazardous situations.
• Even if your headset is an open-air type designed to let you hear outside sounds, don’t turn up the volume so high that you can’t hear what’s around you.
How you get service:
Call 1-800-755-4570 and have your unit’s activation code and model/serial number ready. The activation code and model/serial number information is on the bottom of your receiver.

Welcome to Command Audio!
What If I Travel Out of Range of the Signal?
Your RCA CA1000 receiver is designed for discriminating users who wish to gather, customize, and listen to a broad range of information never before available from a single source. Whether it’s news, sports, weather, or lifestyle programming, information is at your command at the press of a button, once information is stored and updated.
Please glance at the following questions and answers to familiarize yourself with the Command Audio Service.
How are Programs Updated?
Your receiver is constantly updating and storing new programs, even while you are listening to it. This means that you don’t have to worry about missing new programs while listening to other programs. The information will be there when you are ready to listen to it.
Different programs are updated according to different schedules. Your Program Guide (located in a pocket of the Quick Start Guide) will tell you when new information is gathered for the programs that you wish to listen to.
The Command Audio Service is available in various cities throughout the United States. If you travel out of range of the Command Audio signal, (or if you set the reception switch to “OFF,”) the receiver will stop updating your programs. You will, however, be able to play the existing programs from your receiver’s memory. Once you return to any Command Audio Service area, and it is getting power, your receiver will be able to update your programs.
IMPORTANT: If you missed receiving a scheduled update due to being out of signal range or loss of power, you will not receive a new update until the next scheduled time period. (For example if you typically get an update every evening and missed this evening’s update due to loss of signal or power, then you will not get the next update until tomorrow evening.)

Before You Begin
Activating Your Receiver
There are a few things you should know before you plug in and enjoy your receiver.
Your receiver is constantly updating and storing
new programs, even while you are listening to it.
This means that you don’t have to worry about missing new programs while listening to other programs. The information will be there when you are ready to listen to it.
• The receiver is constantly recharging its batteries when it is plugged into a wall outlet or car lighter.
Command Audio recommends to always use an AC/ DC power source. The batteries are provided as a convenience, for those situations when an alternative power source is not readily available. We recommend using your batteries primarily as a backup power source.
• When you are NOT listening to the receiver:
—always leave it plugged into a power source when
possible.
—always slide the switch to ON or STANDBY so that
the receiver can gather and store new programs. If you switch the receiver to OFF, it will NOT receive and update programs.
Your receiver is pre-set at the factory to begin capturing our most popular programs for a 24-hour period from the first time you turn the power on. In order to continue receiving updates of programs after that 24-hour period, you must activate your receiver with Command Audio.
To activate your receiver:
1.Dial the Toll-Free Activation phone number printed on the sticker on your unit. 1.800.264.7289
2.Please have your receiver and credit card ready for Listener Care.
Once you have activated, please peel off the sticker.
Your receiver is programmed at the factory with various program examples, but in order to receive continuous updates of programs, you must activate your receiver with Command Audio.

Connecting the Power
There are three ways to connect your receiver to power.
• Using an AC power source
• Using a car’s lighter plug for DC power
• Using the batteries
Using an AC power source
To use the AC power adapter, plug the receiver into a wall outlet:
1.Plug one end of the AC adapter into the receiver.
2.Plug the adapter into the wall outlet.
Using a car’s lighter plug for DC power
To learn how to connect the power in your car, please see page 23 in Chapter 5, “Using the Receiver in Your Car.”
Using the batteries
Your receiver comes with four rechargeable Alkaline batteries. You can also use standard batteries. The rechargeable batteries will power your receiver for a limited time (up to 2-6 hours) before requiring recharging, depending on previous battery usage. Standard batteries will last up to eight hours.
To install the batteries:
1.Remove the battery cover.
2.Put the batteries in, from left to right, making sure that the (+) and (-) are the same as the diagram in the compartment.
3.Slide the battery cover back on.
8
CA 1000 gw new 11/2/99, 1:29 PM8
Note: The receiver will not work if the batteries are
incorrectly installed. Rechargable batteries can take up to 7 hours to fully recharge.
Low BATTERY Indicator
Turning the Receiver ON
When the batteries are low, the receiver will sound an alert signal, and the low battery indicator (red) light on the front panel will blink.
Note:
• We recommend using alkaline or rechargeable batteries.
• Rechargeable batteries may result in shorter playing time.
• Remove batteries if storing the receiver for a month or more to avoid leakage.
• Dispose of batteries in the proper manner, according to federal, state and local regulations.
• Any battery may leak electrolyte if mixed with a different battery type; if inserted incorrectly; if all batteries are not replaced at the same time; if disposed of in a fire; or if an attempt is made to charge a battery not intended to be recharged.
• Discard leaky batteries immediately to avoid possible skin burns or other personal injury.
To turn the receiver on:
1.Slide the POWER switch on the right-hand side of the receiver to ON.
2.Adjust the Volume control, located beneath the Power switch.
3.Listen to the two minute greeting from Command Audio.
When finished, please familiarize yourself with the various controls and features explained in the next chapter.

Chapter 2: Getting to Know Your Receiver
This chapter will help familiarize you with the various controls. You will find that the controls operate very much like a Compact Disc (CD) player and other devices you may have used in the past. For example, buttons such as NEXT, PREV (Previous), and PLAY operate just like a CD.

Command Audio
Once you have accomplished these tasks, you’re ready to enjoy all that your CA1000 has to offer.
Note: It may take as long as twenty-four hours (or more) before any new programs have been completely stored into your receiver’s memory. MAKE SURE to leave the receiver plugged in, and the MODE switch set to either ON or STANDBY. See your Program Guide for a schedule that explains when the latest edition of each program is available.
the Antenna
It may not always be necessary to extend the antenna. If the “NO SIGNAL” light is blinking, either extend or collapse the antenna or relocate the receiver. When the “NO SIGNAL” light is turned off you will be receiving the signal. When in the STANDBY MODE, the LCD display will show when you are receiving a good signal.
Adding Programs
Your receiver comes with an electronic Program Guide. Use this Program Guide to select the programs you want to hear from the Command Audio Service. The receiver then automatically (and continuously) updates your chosen programs for you.
Playlists are a convenient way to store the programs you like to hear frequently, in the order you prefer to hear them. A typical playlist might include the following programs:
• Traffic reports
• Weather
• News
• Sports
• Stock quotes, etc.
Playlists are preset at the factory, but you can customize your receiver by adding or removing programs, and changing the order that programs are played. There is no limit to the number of programs you can add to your playlists, but keep in mind that your receiver is limited to eight hours of stored programming for a listening session.
There are three places you can store programs that you select from the Program Guide.

After your unit is activated, you can select the specific areas you want to know about from the Traffic topic within the PROGRAM GUIDE mode. You can add specific traffic areas to your playlists. The specific traffic areas will be played in the sequence you select. If you travel through many traffic sectors, you may want to sequence the reports in the order in which you drive through the sectors. Once you have listened to a personalized traffic report, all new traffic incidents for that sector will alert you as they are received. Chapter 5: Using the Receiver in Your Car
Your receiver is designed so that it can be safely used in a car. The integrated antenna and Accessory Mounting Kit are provided for convenient installation.
Make sure your car accessories kit contains the following items:
• Ball Assembly.
• Large, Medium and Small Legs.
• Receiver Holster.
• Two Straps.
• Two Extensions.
• DC Car Adapter.
• Cassette Adapter.
• Two Rubber Feet.
• Belt Clip.
Note: Some cars have cigarette lighters that do not supply power when the ignition is off. You can tell if your car lighter turns off with the ignition if the LED light on the supplied cigarette lighter jack is not lit when you turn your car off.
If your car’s cigarette lighter jack does not supply power when the car is turned off, it will be necessary to take your receiver with you and plug it into an AC power source when parking for periods of time exceeding the battery’s “standby mode” capacity.
To use the receiver in your car:
1.Install the car Accessories kit according to instructions included with the kit itself.
2.Place the receiver in the holster of the Accessories kit.
3.Connect the DC car adapter to the receiver and then to the cigarette lighter jack in your vehicle.
4.Extend the antenna as far as possible, positioning it behind the rear view mirror of the car.
Hearing Command Audio on your car radio
There are two ways you can hear Command Audio on your car radio.
1.The supplied cassette adapter.
2.The built-in wireless FM transmitter.
CA 1000 gw new 11/2/99, 1:29 PM23
23
Using the cassette adapter
To use the cassette adapter:
Consult your vehicle’s radio Owners Manual for details on setting preset buttons.
1.Insert the cord from the cassette adapter into the earphone jack.
2.Insert the cassette portion into your car’s cassette deck. Adjust the volume on your CA1000 and your car to the desired levels.
Using the FM transmitter
To use the FM transmitter:
1.Tune your car radio to an FM frequency that does not have a radio station.
2.Optons. FM transmit. Use the scan buttons to select the FM frequency.
3.Set the FM transmitter frequency on the receiver to the same frequency you selected for your radio.
4.Make sure the POWER MODE switch is in the ON position.
5.Press MY PROGRAMS, PLAYLIST 1 or PLAYLIST 2.
If you have a digital toner, find two stations with at least five frequencies between them. Set the FM transmit to the middle frequency. Then scan your radio to find middle frequency.
Using AUTO ON/OFF
Your receiver will automatically turn on and off with your vehicle ,if you leave it connected to your car’s cigarette lighter jack. When the unit powers up, it will automatically play Playlist 1 in the AM hours, and Playlist 2 in the PM hours. You can use this setting to play only one of those playlists, or MY PROGRAMS, when you turned off your car. Please see page 18 in Chapter 4: “Using the Options” for more information.
Note: You can retune the receiver to transmit to any FM frequency that is not used in your area. Please see page 19 in Chapter 4: “Using the Options” for more information.
If your car has preset radio positions, and 88.7 is an empty station in your area, we suggest that you preset this station as your Command Audio station.

Step: 2
Choose which leg best fits your car. The leg should make contact with a solid area around your air vent. Insert the rubber feet into the selected leg.
Step: 3
Snap the leg onto the ball assembly. The larger leg has three different snap-on positions so that you can adjust the height of the receiver. If your car has a tall and narrow vent, mount the leg horizontally and snap the ball assembly vertically.
Step: 1
Select the best vent for mount attachment. Vents in the center of the dashboard are the best choice because (1) the cigarette lighter/battery connection is close at hand; (2) it is safe and easy to reach the receiver from this position; and (3) you will get the best reception.

Chapter 7: Troubleshooting
Trouble Checks and Adjustments
No power
• Maybe the batteries are weak.
- Open the battery cover and remove and reinsert the batteries.
- Plug in a power cord and recharge the batteries. (See Using Batteries for more details on battery life.)
• Check if the power cord is plugged in, if no batteries.
• Make sure the power mode switch is in the ON position and the mode switch is in the PLAYBACK position.
Does not play the programs chosen
• Check to see if the receiver has power first.
• Check that the Power mode switch is in the ON position. And the Mode switch is in the PLAYBACK position.
• Check the No Signal LED, if it is blinking then move the power and mode switches to ON and Options. Press the MORE INFO button.
Note: A pulsing tone is a bad signal strength. A
steady tone is a good signal strength. If a bad signal is found, move the receiver around until a steady tone is heard. Extend the antenna or collapse the antenna to help reception. If you normally do not get FM radio stations at this location, then you will not get the Command Audio Service.
• Check the to see when the program is transmitted. Switch positions On/Playback, find the program you want to hear and press the More Info button.
