Things to Consider Before You Connect
Protect Against Power Surges
•Connect all components before you plug any of their power cords into the wall outlet.
•Turn off the TV and/or component before you connect or disconnect any cables.
•Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Refer to the Important Safety Instructions packed separately.
Protect Components from Overheating
•Don’t block ventilation holes on any of the components. Arrange the components so that air can circulate freely.
•Don’t stack components.
•If you place components in a stand, make sure you allow adequate ventilation.
•If you connect an audio receiver or amplifier, place it on the top shelf so the heated air from it won’t flow around other
components.
Position Cables Properly to Avoid Audio Interference
•Insert each cable firmly into the designated jack.
•If you place components above the TV, route all cables down the side of the back of the TV instead of straight down the middle of
the TV.
•If your antenna uses 300-ohm twin lead cables, do not coil the cables. Also, keep the twin lead cables away from audio/video
cables.
Important Stand and Base Safety Information
Choose the location for your TV carefully. Place the TV on a stand or base that is of adequate size and strength to prevent the TV from
being accidentally tipped over, pushed off, or pulled off. This could cause personal injury and/or damage the TV. Refer to the
Important Safety Instructions packed separately.

How to Use the Remote Control to Complete the
Initial Setup
The technical term is “Navigation”– how you move through the on-screen menus. The method is the same
throughout the menu screens: highlight your choice and select it.
To highlight a menu item, press the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight one of the menus on the screen.
Use the up and down arrow buttons to move up or down. Use the right and left arrow buttons to move right or
left.
To change the item that you’ve highlighted, press the ENTER button.
Note: Highlighted means that the menu item stands out from other menu items on the list (appears
darker, brighter, or a different color).
Turn on the TV/DVD
Press POWER on the remote or on the top of the TV/DVD.
Using the Menus
You might want to make yourself familiar with the menu system. Because this is a combination unit (TV and
DVD), there is a DVD menu and a TV menu. Each operate a little differently, but the basic operation is the
same.
Press the MENU button to bring up a menu, and use the arrow buttons until the item you want is highlighted.
To select it, press ENTER.

Next Steps
This chapter is dedicated to connecting your TV/DVD. Before you start playing discs, you might want to get familiar with the remote
control — the next few pages of this chapter have details.
If you want to skip straight to playing discs, go to Chapter 2 (page 17). It explains playback features of DVDs, Audio CDs, Video
CDs, and discs that contain mp3 files.
The DVD menu system is outlined in Chapter 3 (page 27), the TV menu system and features are described in Chapter 4 (page 32),
and Chapter 5 contains troubleshooting assistance, your Limited Warranty, and additional information about your TV/DVD.
What to Expect
TV and DVD Modes
As you familiarize yourself with this product, keep in mind that you need to tell the remote which part of the unit you want to operate
— the DVD part of the unit or the TV part. To operate the DVD part of the TV/DVD, press the DVD button on the remote. To
operate the TV part, press the TV button.
Menu Systems
Since this product combines a DVD player with a TV, the menu systems are separate. The settings in one menu system don’t affect the
other. For example, you have to set the parental controls for the TV menu and then set them for the DVD player menu.
User’s Guide
In this user’s guide, the product is generally referred to as a TV/DVD. You might see features referenced separately as TV or DVD
player features, or you might see them combined, depending on the feature.

DVD Basics
Regional Coding
Both the DVD player and the discs are coded by region. These regional codes must match in order for the disc to play. If the codes
don’t match, the disc won’t play. This unit’s code is region 1. Discs with other regional codes can’t be played in this unit.
Using Different Menus
Each disc is programmed with different features. There are two separate menu paths that you can use to access features: the disc’s menu
and the DVD’s status banner. Remember that a feature only works if the disc was programmed with that feature. For example, if you
choose subtitles, the subtitles only appear if the disc was created with subtitles.
•The Disc menu – The disc menu is part of each disc and is separate from the DVD’s status banner. The contents of each disc’s
menu vary according to how the disc was created and what features are included. Sometimes a disc’s menu appears automatically
when you insert the disc, or you can access it by pressing the MENU button.
•The DVD’s status banner – The status banner appears across the top of the screen when a disc is playing. It can only be accessed
while you are playing a disc. It’s turned on and off with the DISPLAY button on the remote.
Types of Discs Your DVD Will Play
•DVD discs and Video CDs – Contain video.
•Audio discs – Contain musical or sound content only.
•mp3 discs – Contain audio files (for example, a CD-R with downloaded mp3 files).
This DVD player is capable of playing the following types of discs: DVDs, audio CDs, Video CDs, and CDs with mp3 files. Before you
put a disc in the player, make sure it is compatible.
You can’t play the following types of discs: Laserdiscs, CD-I, CD-ROM (computer-only discs), DVD-ROM, discs recorded using other
broadcast standards (i.e. PAL or SECAM), or CD-G discs.
Note: Some discs may not be compatible due to laser pickup and disc design.

Using a Disc Menu
A disc is capable of having an on-screen menu that is separate from the DVD’s on-screen
status banner. The disc menu might only contain a list of the titles and chapters, or it
may allow you to change features such as language and playback settings.
Although the content and operation of disc menus vary from disc to disc, the following
example will give you an idea of what to expect.
1.When the disc is first inserted and/or you press MENU, the disc menu appears.
This is an example of a disc menu. The
menus on discs vary because the disc
menu is created by the disc’s author.
2.Press the up or down arrow button on the remote to highlight the section of the disc
menu you want to choose, and press ENTER. In the example on the left, Language
has been selected.
3.Press the up or down arrow button to select a language, and press ENTER.

Chapter 2: Playing Discs
Playing mp3 Discs
mp3 is an audio file format which compresses recorded music. It was developed by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in collaboration with
Thomson Inc. The main advantage of the mp3 format is that it means CD-quality music tracks can be stored on a personal computer
in user-friendly, compressed files. CD-R discs that have been encoded in mp3 format can be played on your DVD player.
