ATMEL’S BLUETOOTH
EVALUATION KIT

Overview

The Atmel PCMCIA Bluetooth card is a high performance solution which
supports the Bluetooth v1.1 standard and allows for communication
between a desktop or notebook PC, equipped with a PCMCIA slot, and
other Bluetooth devices.

The card is based on Atmel’s AT76C551 baseband controller and Silicon
Wave’s integrated direct conversion SiW1502 RF transceiver. The
AT76C551 is a single-chip controller which provides all the necessary func­tionality for high data rate, short range wireless communications in the free
ISM band. It implements the Bluetooth specification and in conjunction with
a 2.4 GHz transceiver provides a low-chip count networking solution for a
wide range of digital communication devices and computer peripherals.

The card comes as a part of Atmel’s Bluetooth Evaluation Kit which can
be used in order to evaluate Atmel’s Bluetooth solution.

Firmware

The firmware running on the
AT76C551 controller implements
the following layers:

• Link Controller (LC)

• Link Manager (LM)

• Host Controller Interface (HCI)

• HCI Transport Layer (PCMCIA)

• Firmware Upgrade Agent
(PCMCIA)

Drivers and Software

The Atmel Bluetooth PCMCIA card
comes with software (up to HCI)
that allows point-to-point video trans­mission, full-duplex voice transfer,
file transfer and chat (white board)
capabilities. With multiple cards,
the Atmel solution can also support
point-to-multipoint (one master
and seven slaves).

The card comes with drivers for
Windows

®

98/2000. Also the L2CAP,
HCI and HCI Transport (PCMCIA)
layers are implemented in software
for hosts running on Windows 98/

2000. The card is compatible with
Bluetooth software stacks by Atmel
recommended third-party vendors,
but is possible to be used with
Bluetooth software stacks from
other third-party vendors.
