Microwave Oven Safety Precautions.
To avoid possible exposure to excessive microwave energy, please observe the following Safety Precautions.
1. NEVER operate the microwave oven with the door open.
2. NEVER try to operate the microwave oven with the door open by tempering with or attempting to disconnect the safety interlocks built into the door or its surrounding.
3. NEVER place any object between the door and the microwave casing to hold the door open. NEVER allow dirt, grease or old cleaning materials to build up in this space, as this can damage the electronic seal.
4. NEVER operate the oven if it becomes damaged; stop using the microwave until the problem or fault is properly and professionally repaired.
5. NEVER have the microwave repaired, serviced or adjusted by anyone other than properly qualified service personnel. Only these people fully understand the characteristics of microwave energy and under what circumstances exposure to it can be harmful.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) has developed a system of identifying microwave oven performance and has indicated that a label be applied to every microwave oven.
The particular label applying to this Proline model is:
The 3 way lines to the label’s left show that this microwave oven has been tested in compliance with the agreement between the manufacturer and MAFF.
The rating 950W to the top right denotes the microwave’s output power and this figure links up with the third area of the label.
The third area carries a single capital letter. In this case ‘E’. You will find this letter repeated on the microwaveable food packages that you buy the letters correspond to what are known as Band Categories and they are used to give you a guide to cooking times. Band ‘A’ will equal one cooking time - say 10 minutes; Band ‘B’ might be 9 minutes. Band ‘E’ gives faster reheating performance.

Electrical Connection
For your safety please read the following information.
Warning: This appliance must be earthed.
The appliance operates from a 3 pin 13 amp plug. The voltage rating is 230 volts and should be protected by a 13 amp fuse either in the plug or distribution board.
The appliance is supplied with a moulded 13 amp 3 pin mains plug fitted with a 13 amp fuse. Should the fuse require replacement, it must be replaced with a fuse rated at 13 amps and approved to BS 1362.
The plug contains a removable fuse cover that must be refitted when the fuse is replaced. In the event of the fuse cover being lost or damaged, the plug must not be used until a replacement cover has been obtained.
If the moulded mains plug is unsuitable for the socket outlet in your home or is removed for any other reason, then the fuse should be removed and the cut off plug disposed of safely to prevent the hazard of electric shock.
There is a danger of electric shock if the cut off plug is inserted into any 13 amp socket outlet.
How to wire a 13 amp plug. Important. The wires in the mains lead on this
appliance are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Green and Yellow - Earth Blue - Neutral Brown - Live
As the colours may not correspond with the markings identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows:
• The green and yellow wire must be connected to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the letter ‘E’ or with the earth symbol ‘ ’ or coloured green and yellow.
• The blue wire must be connected to the terminal marked ‘N’ or coloured black.
• The brown wire must be connected to the terminal marked ‘L’ or coloured red.

Installation
1 Place the microwave oven on a flat, even
surface and operate it only in this position. A good example of an ideal location would be a clean kitchen worksurface. This model is not designed for building in.
2 Leave a couple of inches air space behind and
to the sides of the microwave. Failure to do so may cause the oven to overheat and fail.
3 Position the microwave well away from tv’s
radios and their aerials as the oven’s operation may cause unpleasant interference. This appliance complies to MD69/336 (EEC Regulations 82/499) covering radio interference.
4 Position the microwave away from other
sources of heat such as hot water pipes, cookers and ovens. Do not install the oven where it might become wet, such as near the sink.
5 Should the power supply cable become
damaged, it should be replaced by a qualified service engineer as it is a special type.
6 Before operating for the time, examine the
microwave for damage during transportation. If it is dented or damaged in anyway, or if the door is broken, bent or misaligned DO NOT USE THE OVEN, notify your local Comet Service Centre or Comet Store immediately and return the product for a replacement.
7 Do not operate the oven if it is colder than
room temperature. (This may occur during delivery in cold weather.) Allow the oven to become room temperature before operating.
8 The minimum height of free space necessary
above the top surface of the oven is 100mm.

General Safety Information
All products have an ideal operating enviroment in which they can perfrom best. The purpose of these General Safety instructions is to identify that enviroment and to help you get the best from this product over as long a period as possible.
1. Only use this microwave for food preparation, not for drying clothes, paper, pets or for any other non food use. Microwave ovens cannot sterilse and you must not use yours for this purpose.
2. The oven must not be operated when empty of food or liquid such use can damage it beyond repair. (see questions & answers page
17.) A good ideal is to select a microwave safe cup which has no metallic glaze or decorative trim, half fill with water and keep it in the microwave at all times when you aren’t actually cooking, so if the oven is accidentally switched on the water absorb the microwave energy and avoid damage to the oven.
3. Do not use the oven cavity for any type of storage, such as papers, cookbook, cookware, or any other non food items into the microwave.
4. Do not operate the microwave without the glass tray in place. Be sure it is properly seated on the rotating base at all times.
5. If you ar reheating food in bottles, remove all caps and lids prior to putting such items into the microwave. Do not use narrow necked bottles they can break. Do not cook food in bottles for the same reasons.
6. Never place anything between the door and the door frame, to aviod the possibility of protentially dangerous microwave energy leakage.
7. Do not use recycled paper products for cooking. They may contain impurities which could cause sparks and/or fires which would damage your microwave beyond repair.
8. Making popcorn in a microwave is difficult. Use only a microwave safe popper, (a specialcontainer available from stores). Never exceed the popcorn manufacturer’s direction (generally less than 3 minutes) longer cooking will givemore or better popcorn, but increase the risk of scorching or fire. Do not use oil unless recommended by the popcorn manufacturers. The yields from microwaving popcorn are lower than those you get with conventional cooking methods and a number of unpopped kernels will always result. Do not leave the microwave unattended this will reduce the risk of fire. Microwave popcorn is available and results here are better, but not perfect.
9. If cooking food surrounded by a membrane, (such as egg yolks, potatoes, tomatoes, chicken livers) piercing them several times with a fork before placing them in the microwave.
10. Keep the waveguide cover clean at all times. Wipe the oven interior with a soft damp cloth after each use. If you leave grease or fat anywhere in the cavity it may overheat, smoke or even catch fire when next using the oven.
11. Never heat oil or fat for deep frying as you
cannot control the temperature and doing so may lead to overheating and fire.

Cooking
Utensils
16
COOKING UTENSILS
Utensils should be checked to ensure that they are suitable for use in microwave ovens. Microwave energy is produced by high frequency radio waves. They are reflected from metal, but will pass through most cooking utensils without heating them. As the waves come into contact with the food, they are converted into heat energy. Listed below are the suggested cooking utensils for this microwave oven and when to use them.
1. Dishes with metal trim of any type-should not be used. This will cause sparking.
2. Glass or ceramic heat proof dishes-excellent for microwave cooking.
3. China dishes and plates-without metal trim may be used to cook and heat individual portions of food.
4. Wood only for short period, wood contains some moisture and the microwave energy may cause the wood to dry out and crack.
5. Aluminum foil-may be used in very small pieces for shielding only. Any aluminum foil used should never be closer than 2.5cm from side walls of oven.
6. Plastic-most heat resistant plastic dinnerware may be used for heating food. However polyethylene, melamine, phenol are unsuitable for use in the oven. They become hot in the microwave.
7. Wax paper-use as a cover to avoid spatters.
8. Metal-in general, metal utensils should not be used in microwave oven.
CARE AND CLEANING
Although your oven is provided with safety features, it is important to observe the following:
1. It is important never to tamper with safety interlocks.
2. Do not place any object between the oven front face and the door or allow residue to accumulate on sealing surfaces. Wipe the sealing area frequently with a mild detergent, rinse and dry. Never use abrasive powders or pads.
3. When opened, the door must not be subjected to strain.
Do not operate the oven if it is damaged. It is particularly important that the door
closes properly and that there is no damage to the:
i) Door(bent) ii) Hinges and Hookes(broken or loosened) iii) Door seals and sealing surfaces.
4. The oven should not be adjusted or repaired by anyone except a properly trained service technician.
Page 18
Questions and Answers
17
Q : I accidentally ran my microwave oven
without any food in it. Is it damaged?
A : Running the oven empty for a short time will
not damage the oven. However, it is not recommended.
Q : Can the oven be used with the glass tray or
roller guide removed?
A : No. Both the glass tray and roller guide must
always be used in the oven before cooking.
Q : Can I open the door when the oven is
operating?
A : The door can be opened anytime during the
cooking operation. Then microwave energy will be instantly switched off and the time setting will maintain until the door is closed and the START button is pressed.
Q : Why do I have moisture in my microwave
oven after cooking?
A : The moisture on the side of your microwave
oven is normal. It is caused by steam from the heated food condensing on the cooler parts of the oven’s interior.
Q : Does microwave energy pass through the
viewing screen in the door?
A : No. The metal screen bounces back the
energy to the oven cavity. The holes are made to allow light to pass through. They do not let microwave energy pass through.
