Colour wh ee ls are bu il t up using di ffere nt ly sized segm en ts , consisting of
the pri ma ry colours RGB, a nd with added a cc en ts, such as a c lear (“White” )

Additio n of a clear segm en t
The add it io n of a clear se gm ent in the co lo ur wheel incr eases maxim um
availab le b rightness from a pro je ctor. By allowing w hi te light fr om the lamp

Sample applicati on details and recommendations
Visualizati on
A vast ra ng e of applicat io ns can be cov ered under th e vi sualization u mb rella.
General ly, visual iz at ion is common ly u sed about a pp li ca tions that se ek to
graphic al ly presen t la rge a mo un ts of data, b e it photograph ic o r computer
cre at ed , such as g eo ph ysical data ( fo r instance oi l an d gas well ex pl or ation),
CAD/CAM c on struction and p ho toreali st ic render in g, computer m od el led
flow a nd s tress a na ly sis, etc. Imm er si ve and augm en te d displays an d Virtual
Reality g o in the visual iz at ion categor y. Vis ua li zatoin aids i n un derstanding
and int er preting d at a, and in gener al , require very hig h resolutio n di sp lays,
and pho to realistic c ol ours with great depth an d co ntrast. Rec om me nded
colour wh ee ls; 3/6-segme nt ( primar y), or 4-se gm en t (secondary) with a sm all
clear s eg me nt added for ex tr a impact.
Simulat io n
Some si mu la tion applicat io ns can be cov ered under th e vi sualization
umbre ll a, but in t hi s case, we re fer to simula ti on as that wh at t alkes place
as a su bs ti tion of rea l life applic at io n. Simulati on i s primarily u se d in training
situati on s, such as for dr iv ing, flying , sa il ing and bri dg e (ships), as w el l
as shoo ti ng , fire ex ti ngushing and a wh ole lot of ot he r training si tu at ions.
Common to m ost of these ap pl ications is t ha t they re qu ire pho to realistic
ren de ri ng, high co nt ra st and detail , an d reduc ed a rtefacting in t he form
of rain bo ws and brea ku p. Recommende d co lour wheels ; 3/ 6- segment for
reduced a rt ef acting and real is ti c colours.
Medical i ma gi ng
Medical i ma ging applicat io ns include fo r in st ance MR and X Ra y imaging.
General requirem en ts include an a ccurate gre y scale, a co rrect gam ma
transfe r fu nction, increased colour d ep th and re du ced artefac ti ng . These
are , of course, a ve ry small part o f th e requi rements i n th is field, but t he y are
rel ev an t to the ch oi ce of colour wh ee ls . Recommend ed c olour wheels; 3 /6 -
segment , or 4-segment wi th a small clea r se gm ent added f or e xtra impact,
dependi ng o n the actual ap pl ication.
Busines s presentat io ns
Most bu si ne ss pres en tations t ak e place in rooms and e nvironm en ts where th e
pre se nt er has litt le o r no contro l over lights a nd enviro nm en t. High bri gh tn ess
is ofte n th e main re qu irement , as that makes t he p resen ta ti on easier to se e
and the e nv ironmen t le ss of a pro blem. Recomme nd ed colour whe el s; high
brigthn es s, 4-segment, o r a general gra ph ic s display col ou r wheel (smalle r
white s eg me nt), for impr ov ed colour repro du ct io n.
