IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS
WARNING:To reduce the risk of serious injury, read the following important precau-
tions before using the elliptical exerciser.
1
. Read all instructions in this manual and all
warnings on the elliptical exerciser before using the elliptical exerciser.
2. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that all users of the elliptical exerciser are adequately informed of all precautions.
3. The elliptical exerciser is intended for home use only. Do not use the elliptical exerciser in a commercial, rental, or institutional setting.
4. Place the elliptical exerciser on a level surface, with a mat beneath it to protect the floor or carpet. Keep the elliptical exerciser indoors, away from moisture and dust. Make sure that there is enough clearance around the elliptical exerciser to mount, dismount, and use it.
5. Inspect and properly tighten all parts regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately.
6. Keep children under 12 and pets away from the elliptical exerciser at all times.
7. The elliptical exerciser should not be used by persons weighing more than 1
15 kg (250
lbs).
8. Wear appropriate clothes while using the elliptical exerciser. Always wear athletic shoes for foot protection while exercising.
9
. Hold the handgrip pulse sensor or the han-
dlebars when mounting, dismounting, or using the elliptical exerciser.
10. The pulse sensor is not a medical device. Various factors may affect the accuracy of heart rate readings. The pulse sensor is intended only as an exercise aid in determining heart rate trends in general.
11. Keep your back straight while using the elliptical exerciser; do not arch your back.
12. If you feel pain or dizziness at any time while exercising, stop immediately and cool down.
13. When you stop exercising, allow the pedals to slowly come to a complete stop. The elliptical exerciser does not have a free wheel; the pedals will continue to move until the flywheel stops.
14. Always unplug the power cord immediately after use and before cleaning the elliptical exerciser.
15. The warning decals shown on page 4 have been placed on the elliptical exerciser
. If a decal is missing or illegible, call the telephone number on the front cover of this manual and order a free replacement decal. Apply the decal in the location shown.
WARNING:Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician.
This is especially important for persons over the age of 35 or persons with pre-existing health problems. Read all instructions before using. ICON assumes no responsibility for personal injury or property damage sustained by or through the use of this product.

SUGGESTED STRETCHES
T
he correct form for several basic stretches is shown at the right.
Move slowly as you stretch—never bounce.
1. Toe Touch Stretch
Stand with your knees bent slightly and slowly bend forward from your hips. Allow your back and shoulders to relax as you reach down toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Hamstrings, back of knees and back.
2. Hamstring Stretch
Sit with one leg extended. Bring the sole of the opposite foot toward you and rest it against the inner thigh of your extended leg. Reach toward your toes as far as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches: Hamstrings, lower back and groin.
3. Calf/Achilles Stretch
With one leg in front of the other, reach forward and place your hands against a wall. Keep your back leg straight and your back foot flat on the floor. Bend your front leg, lean forward and move your hips toward the wall. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. To cause further stretching of the achilles tendons, bend your back leg as well. Stretches: Calves, achilles tendons and ankles.
4. Quadriceps Stretch
With one hand against a wall for balance, reach back and grasp one foot with your other hand. Bring your heel as close to your buttocks as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times for each leg. Stretches: Quadriceps and hip muscles.
5. Inner Thigh Stretch
Sit with the soles of your feet together and your knees outward. Pull your feet toward your groin area as far as possible. Hold for 15 counts, then relax. Repeat 3 times. Stretches: Quadriceps and hip muscles.

CONDITIONING GUIDELINES
The following guidelines will help you to plan your exercise program. Remember that proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential for successful results.
EXERCISE INTENSITY
Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen your cardiovascular system, the key to achieving the desired results is to exercise with the proper intensity. The proper intensity level can be found by using your heart rate as a guide. The chart below shows recommended heart rates for fat burning, maximum fat burning, and cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise.
T
o find the proper heart rate for you, first find your age at the bottom of the chart (ages are rounded off to the nearest ten years). Next, find the three numbers above your age.
The three numbers are your “training zone.” The lower two numbers are recommended heart rates for fat burning; the highest number is the recommended heart rate for aerobic exercise.
Fat Burning
To burn fat effectively, you must exercise at a relatively low intensity level for a sustained period of time. During the first few minutes of exercise, your body
uses easily accessible
carbohydrate
calories for energy. Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored
fat
calories for energy. If your goal is to burn fat, adjust the intensity of your e
xercise until your heart rate is near the lowest num-
ber in your training zone as you exercise.
For maximum fat burning, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the middle number in your training zone as you exercise.
Aerobic Exercise
If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular system, your exercise must be “aerobic.” Aerobic exercise is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for prolonged periods of time. This increases the demand on the heart to pump blood to the muscles, and on the lungs to oxygenate the blood. For aerobic exercise, adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the highest number in your training zone as you exercise.
WORKOUT GUIDELINES
Each workout should include the following three parts:
A warm-up, consisting of 5 to 10 minutes of stretching and light exercise. A proper warm-up increases your body temperature, heart rate, and circulation in preparation for exercise.
Training zone exercise, consisting of 20 to 30 minutes of exercising with your heart rate in your training zone. Note: During the first few weeks of your exercise program, do not keep your heart rate in your training zone for longer than 20 minutes.
A cool-down, with 5 to 10 minutes of stretching. This will increase the flexibility of your muscles and will help to prevent post-exercise problems.
EXERCISE FREQUENCY
To maintain or improve your condition, complete three workouts each week, with at least one day of rest between workouts. After a few months of regular exercise, you may complete up to five workouts each week if desired. The key to success is to make exercise a regular and enjoyable part of your everyday life.
WARNING:
Before beginning this or any exercise program, consult your physician. This is espec
ially important for persons over the age of 35

Inspect and tighten all parts of the elliptical exerciser regularly. Replace any worn parts immediately.
For smooth operation of the elliptical exerciser, clean the
ramp regularly
using a soft cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. Other parts of the elliptical exerciser can be cleaned in the same way.
Keep liquids away from the console. Never use abrasives or solvents.
HOW TO MOVE THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER
Stand in front of the elliptical exerciser, hold the handlebars firmly, and place one foot against the ramp in the location shown. Pull the handlebars until the elliptical exerciser can be moved on the front wheels, and carefully move the elliptical exerciser to the desired location. Then, place one foot against the ramp and lower the elliptical exerciser.
Due to the size and weight of the elliptical exer-
ciser
, use extreme caution while moving and low-
ering it.
HOW TO LEVEL THE ELLIPTICAL EXERCISER
A
fter the elliptical exerciser has been moved, make sure that the ends of both stabilizers are touching the floor. If the elliptical exerciser rocks slightly on your floor during use, turn one or both of the leveling feet under the front stabilizer until the rocking motion is eliminated.
HANDGRIP PULSE SENSOR TROUBLESHOOTING
If there are sheets of clear plastic on the metal contacts on the handgrip pulse sensor, peel off the plastic. For optimal performance of the handgrip pulse sensor, keep the metal contacts clean using a soft cloth and a small amount of mild detergent.
Never
use alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals.
Avoid moving your hands or squeezing the handgrip pulse sensor too tightly. Excessive movement or pressure may interfere with heart rate readings. For the most accurate heart rate reading, hold the metal contacts for about 30 seconds.

HOW TO PLUG IN THE POWER CORD
This product must be earthed. If it should malfunc-
tion or break down, earthing provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-earthing conductor and an earthing plug. If the power cord is damaged, it must be
replaced with a manufacturer-recommended power cord.
Two power cords are included. Select the one that will fit your outlet.
Refer to drawing 1, and plug the indicated end of the power cord into the socket at the back of the elliptical exerciser.
Refer to drawing
2. Plug the power cord into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and earthed in accor-
dance with all local codes and ordinances. Note: In
Italy, an adaptor (not included) must be used between the power cord and the outlet. Important: The elliptical exerciser is not compatible with GFCI-equipped outlets.
Note: When the power cord is plugged in, the ellip
tical exerciser’s incline system may automatically calibrate itself. During the calibration process, two dashes (– –) will appear in the main display of the console, and the ramp will move to the highest position and then return to the lowest position. The calibration process will last for one to two minutes.
DANGER: Improper connection of
the equipment-earthing conductor can result in an increased risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly earthed. Do not modify the plug provided with the product—if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

Each preset program will automatically change the resistance of the pedals and prompt you to increase or decrease your pace as it guides you through an effective workout.
Follow the steps below to use a preset program.
Turn on the console.
See step 1 on page 12.
Select a preset program.
To select a preset program, press the Program (PGM) button repeatedly until “P-3,” “P-4,” “P-5,” “P-6,” “P-7,” “P-8,” “P-9,” or “P-10” appears in the upper section of the display.
Begin pedalling to start the program.
To start the program, simply begin pedalling. Each preset program consists of 20 or 30 one-minute periods. One resistance level and one target pace are programmed for each period. Note: The same resistance level and/or target pace may be programmed for two or more consecutive periods.
At the end of each period of the program, the time will flash in the centre display and a series of tones will sound. In addition, the resistance of the pedals will automatically change if a different resistance level is programmed for the next period. Note: If the resistance level is too high or too low, you can change it by pressing the Resistance + and – buttons. However, when the current period ends, the resistance of the pedals will automatically change if a different resistance level is programmed for the next period.
As you exercise, the pace display w
ill help you to keep your peda
lling pace near the target pace setting for the current period. When one of the “too slow” indicators lights, increase your pace. When one of the “too fast” indicators lights, decrease your pace. When the centre indicator lights, maintain your current pace.
Important: The target pace settings are intended only to provide motivation. Your actual pace may be slower than the target pace settings. Make sure to exercise at a pace that is comfortable for you.
During the program, the centre of the display will show the time remaining in the program. If you stop pedalling for a few seconds, the display will pause and the time will flash. If you continue pedalling after the program is completed, the display will continue to show exercise feedback.
Monitor your progress with the display.

OW TO USE THE PULSE PROGRAM
Pulse program 1 is designed to keep your heart rate w
ithin a preset range during your workout. Pulse pro-
g
ram 2 is designed to keep your heart rate near a tar-
get heart rate setting that you select.
Follow the steps below to use a pulse program.
Turn on the console.
See step 1 on page 12.
Select a pulse program.
To select a pulse program, press the Program (PGM) button repeatedly until “P-1” or “P-2” appears in the upper section of the display.
Enter your age or a target heart rate setting.
If pulse program 1 is selected, the
word “AGE” will flash in the lower section of the display and an age setting will appear. If you have already entered your age, press the button with the heart symbol. If you have not entered your age, press the small + and – buttons to enter your age, and then press the button with the heart symbol. Note: Once you have entered your age, it will be saved in memory.
If pulse program 2 is selected, the
word “RATE” will flash in the lower section of the dis
play and a target heart rate setting will appear. Press the small + and – buttons to change the target heart rate set
-
ting if desired
(see EXERCISE INTENSITY on
page 22).
Then, press the button with the heart
symbol.
Hold the handgrip pulse sensor.
I
t is not necessary to hold the handgrip pulse sensor continuously during a pulse program; h
owever, you must hold the handgrip pulse sensor frequently for the program to function properly.
Each time you hold the handgrip pulse sensor, keep your hands on the metal contacts for at least 30 seconds. Note: When
you are not holding the handgrip pulse sensor, the letters “PLS” will appear in the display instead of your heart rate.
Begin pedalling to start the program.
Pulse program 1 is divided into 30 one-minute
periods. One target heart rate setting is programmed for each period. (The same target heart rate setting may be programmed for two or more consecutive periods.)
Pulse program 2 is divided
into 60 one-minute periods (you may choose to use only part of the program). The same target heart rate setting is programmed for all periods.
During the program, the console will regularly compare your heart rate to the target heart rate setting for the current period. If your heart rate is too far below or above the target heart rate setting, the resistance of the pedals will automatically increase or decrease to bring your heart rate closer to the target heart rate setting. Note: If the resistance level is too high or too low, you can override it by pressing the Resistance buttons. However, when the console compares your heart rate to the target heart rate setting, the resistance may automatically change.
After the first oneminute period ends, the pace display will help you to maintain a steady pedalling pace. When one of the “too slow” indicators lights, increase your pace. When one of the “too fast” indicators lights, decrease your pace. When the centre indicator lights, maintain your current pace.
Important: The pace display is intended only to provide a goal. Make sure to pedal at a pace that is comfortable for you.
