OPERATOR SAFETY

DANGER:

HANDS AND FEET AWAY FROM TINES AND CUTTING AREA. Rotating tines can cause serious injury. Do not attempt to clear away cut material or hold material to be cut whenthe engine/motoris running. Makesure powerheadis stopped andspark plug wire is disconnected(orpowerheadis disconnected from power source) when removing jammed materialfromthetines. Donot graborholdattachment by the tines.

Dress properly. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protection when operating,or performing maintenanceon your unit (safety glasses are available). Eye protection should be marked Z87. Always wear face ordustmask if operation

is dusty. Always wear heavy, long pants, long

sleeves, boots, and gloves. Always wear foot protection. Do not go

barefoot or wear sandals. Secure hair above shoulder length. Se-

cure or remove loose clothing or clothing with loosely hanging ties, straps, tassels, etc. They can be caught in moving parts. Being fully covered also helps protect you

from debris and pieces of toxic plants thrown by spinning tines. Stay alert. Do not operate when you are

tired,ill, upset,orundertheinfluence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. Watch what you are doing; use common sense. Wear hearing protection.

Never start or run inside a closed room or

building. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill. Keep handles free of oil and fuel.

FUEL SAFETY (for gas powerheads)

Mix and pour fuel outdoors.

Keep away from sparks or flames.

Use a container approved for fuel.

Do notsmoke orallowsmokingnearfuel or

the powerhead. Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all fuel

spills beforestarting the powerhead. Moveatleast 10feet(3 meters)awayfrom

fueling site before starting powerhead engine. Stop engine and allow to cool before re-

moving fuel cap. Remove fuel cap slowly.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY (for electric powerheads)

presence of flammable liquids or gases to avoid creating a fire or explosion and/or causing damage to unit.

Avoid dangerous environments. Do not

use in unventilated areas or where dust or explosive vapors can build up. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, use

extension cords specifically marked as suitable for outdoor appliances. The electrical ratingofthe cordmustnotbe less than the rating of the unit. The cord must be marked with the suffix “W-A” (in Canada, “W”). Make sure your extension cord is in goodcondition. Inspect extension cord beforeuseand replace ifdamaged.An undersized extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. Ifin doubt,usethe nextheavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Do not use multiple cords.

The powerheadmay have a polarized plug

(one blade is wider thanthe other); if so, it will require theuseofa polarized extension cord. The applianceplug will fitinto apolarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord will requiretheuseofa polarizedwalloutlet. This plugwill fitinto thepolarizedwall outletonly oneway. Ifplugdoesnotfitfullyinto thewall outlet,reversetheplug. If it still does notfit, contact a qualified electrician to install the properwall outlet. Donotchangetheequipment plug, extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any way. Donotattemptto repair unit. Inspectthein-

sulation and connectors on the powerhead and extension cord before each use. If there is any damage, do not use until damage is repaired by your authorized service center. Donotpull orcarry bycord;donot usecord

as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Keep cord away from heated surfaces. Do not unplugby pullingoncord. To unplug,grasp the plug, not the cord. Do not use the powerhead if the switch

does not turn the unit on and off properly. Have the unit repaired by your authorized service center. Keep the extension cord clear of operator

and obstacles at all times. Do not expose cords to heat,oil, water, or sharp edges. Avoid any body contact with any grounded

conductor,such as metal fences, or pipes, to avoid the possibility of electric shock. Don’t handle plug or unit with wet hands. Do not use with damaged cord or plug. If

powerheadis not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water, return it to your authorized service center for repair. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

protectionshouldbeprovidedonthe circuit oroutlettobe usedforthe powerhead. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety.

DOUBLE INSULATION CONSTRUCTION

Y our powerhead should be double insulated to help protect against electric shock. Double insulation construction consists of two separate “layers” of electrical insulation instead of grounding. Too ls and appliances built with a dou ble insula tion systemare notint e ndedtobe grounded. Safety precautions must be observed when operating any electrical tool. The double insulation system only provides added protection against injury resulting from an internal electrical insulation failure.

WARNING:

powerhead, including housing, switch, motor, etc., must be diagnosed and repaired by qualified service personnel. Replacement parts fora double insulated appliance must be identical to the parts they replace. A double insulated app liance is marked with thewords “double insulation” or “doubleinsulated”. Thesymbol (squarewithinasquare) may also bemarkedon the appliance. Failure to have the unit repaired by your authorized service dealer can cause the double insulation construction to become ineffectiveand result in serious injury.

Inspect entire unit before each use. Re-

placedamagedparts. Check forfuelleaks. Makesureall fasteners areinplace andsecurely fastened. Maintain unit according to recommended

procedures. Have all maintenance and service not ex-

plained in this manual performed by an authorized service center. Throw away tines that are bent, warped,

cracked, broken, or damagedin any other way. Replace parts that are cracked, chipped, or damagedbeforeusing the unit. Use only recommended Poulan PRO

parts and accessories. Never use wire, wire rope, string, flailing devices, etc. Be sure tines stop turning when engine

idles (see CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS section of powerheadmanual). Removethetinesbeforemakingcarburetor

adjustments. Hold the unit by hand. Keepothers away whenmakingcarburetor

adjustments. Never start the unit with theclutch housing

removed. The clutch can fly off and cause serious injury. Avoid heavy contact with solid objects that

might stop the tines. If heavy contact occurs, stop the unit and inspect fordamage. If tines strike a foreign object, follow these

steps: stop unit and disconnect spark plug wire (or disconnect from powersource),inspect for damage, and repair any damage before resuming operation of the unit.

CULTIVATINGSAFETY

WARNING:

OPERATING THE COUPLER

INSTALLING ATTACHMENT HANGER

Anattachmenthanger is providedforstorage when attachment is not in use. To install hanger on attachment:

1. Removetheshaft capfrom theattachment (if present) and discard.

2. Press andholdthe locking/release button.

3. Push hanger ontotheattachmentuntilthe locking/release buttonsnaps intothehole.

hot after extended periods of use. To avoid burns, do not touch the gearbox until it has been allowed to cool.

CULTIVATING

1. Move the cultivator to the work area prior to starting the engine/motor.

2. With the engine/motor running and the tines off theground,press the throttletrigger to increase the engine speed.

3. Holdtriggerhandleand assist handlefirmly. Slowly lower the cultivator until the tines make contact with the ground.

4. Before using the unit, tighten the knob securely by turning clockwise.

4. As unit begins cultivating, pull back onthe unit so that the tines can penetrate the ground.

5. Once thegroundhasbeenbroken,continueatamoderatepaceuntilyou arefamiliar with the controls and the handling of the cultivator.

6. Pull the cultivator backwards to improve thedepth ofcultivation andreduceyoureffort.

7. To cultivate in confined areas or narrow rows, remove the left and right outertines (see TINE REPLACEMENT).

SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS

TINE REPLACEMENT

WARNING:

spin aftertheengine stops orafterthe throttle trigger has been released. To avoid serious injury, make sure the tines have stopped coasting and disconnect the spark plug (or disconnect powerhead from power source) before performing work on the tines.
