• Your Atrium Powered Speaker can be either the left or right speaker of a stereo pair, depending on convenient placement near a standard household AC power source. Use the “balance” control of your electronics to send the signal alternately to the left and then to the right. If you find stereo imaging is “backwards” after you’ve hooked up the Speaker Wire inputs, simply switch the Left & Right inputs to flip-flop the Left & Right images. Be sure to maintain terminal color consistency (polarity).
• Use speaker wire of the correct length to attach the Powered Speaker to its Passive partner via Binding Post connections [figures 9 & 10].
• Only after you have made your speaker connections, attach the External AC Power Pack to the Powered Speaker [figure 11]. Plug the Power Pack into a standard household AC power source, and then turn on your electronics.
SELECTING AN ELECTRONIC SOURCE
If you turn on your system and do not hear any sound, check the settings on your electronics.
• Make sure the “Mute” option is not selected.
• If your receiver has “Multi-Zone” controls, make sure the correct options have been selected.
• If your receiver has an “A” & “B” speaker selector for “Multi-Room” use, make sure the correct option is selected.
• If only one speaker is working, check the balance control setting on your receiver or amplifier.

Use the “balance” control of your electronics to send the signal alternately to the left and then to the right. If you find stereo imaging is “backwards” after you’ve hooked up the Line Level inputs, simply switch the 1 & 2 inputs to flip-flop the Left & Right stereo images.
• Use speaker wire of the correct length to attach the Powered Speaker to its Passive partner via Binding Post connections [figures 9 & 10].
• Only after you have made your speaker connections, attach the External AC Power Pack to the Powered Speaker [figure 16]. Plug the Power Pack into a standard household AC power source, and then turn on your electronics.
Hookup Hookup #2—Speaker Wire [figure 8]. Use this hookup method with speaker wire to remote locations, for “Multi-Room” (selectable “A” or “B” speaker-set on your electronics) applications.
• Turn your source electronics off.
• Attach Speaker Wire from your receiver or amplifier to the Left and Right Speaker Wire Input Posts on the back panel of the Self-Powered Atrium Powered Speaker.
• Strip 2 inch (12.7mm) of insulation from each of the two conductors of the wire to
expose the bare metal and twist each of the conductors into a single unfrayed strand (so you have two unfrayed strands). Note that one of the terminals on the rear of the speaker is red (+) and the other is black (-). Make certain that you connect the wire from the red terminal of your amplifier or receiver to the red terminal on your speaker and the wire from the black terminal of your amplifier or receiver to the black terminal on your speaker [figure 11]. Most wire has some indicator (such as color-coding, ribbing or writing) on one of the two conductors to help you maintain consistency.

MOUNTING
The Atrium’s swiveling wall bracket allows it to be mounted either horizontally or vertically and aimed to deliver the best possible sound in a variety of situations. Follow the steps below to safely secure the brackets and speakers.
When choosing a location for mounting your Atrium speakers, remember that one speaker in the pair is the Powered speaker. It has a built-in power amplifier and must be plugged into a standard household AC power source in order to operate. The other speaker is the Passive (non-powered) speaker, and can be placed as near or far from the Powered Speaker as is convenient.
Self-Powered Atrium Loudspeakers are not magnetically shielded and should not be placed closer than 1’ (30cm) from a television set or computer monitor. If you notice video distortion or discoloration, immediately move the speakers away from the TV and call Polk Audio Customer Service 800-377-7655 (US & Can), 410-764-5266, 9am-6pm EST, Monday through Friday, or email: polkcs@polkaudio.com.
Installation of Atrium Series Loudspeakers requires basic skills in using tools such as a drill and screwdriver. If you are in doubt that you possess the necessary skills or tools, consult your Polk Audio dealer, or a professional installer.
• Make certain that the location you plan to mount the Powered speaker is near a standard household AC power source. Use the cord on the external power supply to judge convenient distance. It’s a good idea to leave the speaker unplugged until the installation is finished (see hookup instructions on the previous page).
• Check for obstacles that could hinder a cable run from your remote installation location to your receiver or processor.
• Make sure the material on which you plan to mount the speakers (plaster, drywall, paneling, stone, etc.) can support the weight of the speakers (Atrium 45P=[8lbs/3.63kg powered] [6lbs/2.72kg passive]).
• Make sure the locations you select do not conceal electrical wiring or plumbing.

MONO/STEREO SETTING
Use this switch [figure 11] to improve imaging, especially in remote room and long distance installations.
• For the best acoustic performance, position your speakers 4 - 8 feet (240cm) apart on the same wall. Choose the “Stereo” setting to achieve successful stereo imaging.
• If your speakers are far apart, or positioned in separate rooms, choose the “Mono” setting to send the same information to both speakers.
SETTING VOLUME WITH SECONDARY VOLUME CONTROL
The Secondary Volume Control for the Selfpowered Atrium Speakers is located on the front of the Powered Speaker below the grille [figure 12]. It is factory set at the halfway point position. You can use this secondary volume control to set the level of the speakers according to the sensitivity of your source input. Once you set it you can forget it.
• Set the volume of your electronics and then adjust it remotely using the volume control on the speaker, or visa versa.

• Line up the bracket, attached to the speaker, so that the screw heads pass through the large center hole of the bracket’s keyhole slots.
• Let the speaker and bracket slide straight down, allowing the screw head to slip behind the smaller end of the keyhole slot [figure 16].
• Tug gently on the speaker to make certain that the screws and bracket are properly aligned and that the wall anchors are secure.
• If the bracket is not held snug against the wall by the screw heads, remove the speaker from the wall, drive the screws in a little further and then remount the speaker.

• Once the speaker is mounted, the bracket knobs can be loosened to “aim” the speaker, and then hand-tightened to keep the speaker angled correctly [figure 17].
• Follow the speaker pair hookup directions on the previous page.
SAFETY FIRST
When installing Atrium speakers be aware of the weight of your particular model (Atrium 45P=approx [8lbs/3.63kg powered] [6lbs/2.72kg passive]) and the weight bearing tolerance of the material to which you are mounting the speaker. If you are not sure of a safe way of mounting your speakers please consult a professional installer, your authorized Polk Audio dealer, or a building contractor. Do not compromise safety.
• Prior to installation, hold the speaker in the chosen location to make sure it safely clears obstacles such as ceiling, adjacent walls, corners, beams, lighting fixtures and door/window frames.
• Using the keyhole slots in the bracket as a template, mark the installation location of the two keyhole slots with a pencil. You can do this by removing the bracket knobs on the top and bottom of the speaker and removing the bracket, or by leaving the bracket connected to the speaker [figure 13]. Orient the bracket so that the small ends of the keyhole slots are facing “up” according to the direction of installation. Reattach the bracket to the speakers, if you have removed it, by reinserting it into the bracket gap and then tightening the bracket knobs.
• If you are certain that there is a stud behind the wall surface, drive #10 screws (not included) through the wall and into the stud [figure 14a].
• If there is no stud behind the wall at the chosen location, install #10 (M4.5) wall anchors (not supplied) into the wall by following the wall-anchor-manufacturer's instructions [figure 14b].
• For masonry walls, use a masonry drill bit and #10 masonry anchor and screw (not included).
• Drive screws into stud or wall anchors, leaving screw heads protruding 1/16" (1.6mm).
• If speaker wire is being fed from a hole in the wall behind the bracket, pull this speaker wire through the hole in the bracket before mounting the bracket [figure 15].

PAINTING THE CABINET, BRACKET KNOBS AND BRACKET:
1. Apply two thin coats of primer to the cabinet and knobs. The bracket does not require a primer.
2. When the primer is completely dry, apply the finish color [figure 21].
3. When the paint is completely dry, remove the masking material.
4. Do not reattach the speaker to the bracket until the bracket is mounted. Try to keep all handling of freshly painted parts to a minimum.
PAINTING THE GRILLE:
1. The grille of the Atrium speaker features an even, protective powder coating. This powder coating is an ideal primer.
2. Spray on two thin coats of finish color with no primer [figure 22]. If you’re using a compressor and spray gun, use the finest, most diffuse setting. Be careful not to fill the holes in the grille with paint. Thick paint may clog the grille holes.
3. When the paint is completely dry, carefully fit the grille into its recess so that it is just resting on the cabinet. Starting with one corner, go around the speaker and push the grille into the grille notch a little bit at a time. Be gentle; the grille may be easily bent out of shape by rough handling.
