instructions should be followed.

CLEANING — Unplug this product from the wall outlet

before cleaning. The product should be cleaned only with a polishing cloth or a soft dry cloth. Never clean with furniture wax, benzine, insecticides or other volatile liquids since they may corrode the cabinet.

ATTACHMENTS — Do not use attachments not

recommended by the product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

WATER AND MOISTURE — Do not use this product

near water — for example, near a bathtub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub; in a wet basement; or near a swimming pool; and the like.

ACCESSORIES — Do not place this product on an

unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall, causing serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to the product. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the product. Any mounting of the product should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer.

CART — A product and cart combination should be

moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the product and cart combination to overturn.

VENTILATION — Slots and openings in the cabinet are

provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the product and to protect it from overheating, and these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the manufacturer’s instructions have been adhered to.

POWER SOURCES — This product should be operated

only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your product dealer or local power company.

LOCATION – The appliance should be installed in

a stable location.

NONUSE PERIODS – The power cord of the appli-

ance should be unplugged from the outlet when left un-used for a long period of time.

GROUNDING OR POLARIZATION

÷ If this product is equipped with a polarized alternating

current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), it will fit into the outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

÷ If this product is equipped with a three-wire

grounding type plug, a plug having a third (grounding) pin, it will only fit into a grounding type power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the grounding type plug.

POWER-CORD PROTECTION — Power-supply cords

should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product.

OUTDOOR ANTENNA GROUNDING — If an outside

antenna or cable system is connected to the product, be sure the antenna or cable system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built-up static charges. Article 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information with regard to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. See Figure A.

LIGHTNING — For added protection for this product

during a lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and power-line surges.

POWER LINES — An outside antenna system should

not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them might be fatal.

OVERLOADING — Do not overload wall outlets,

extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

OBJECT AND LIQUID ENTRY — Never push objects of

SERVICING — Do not attempt to service this product

yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

DAMAGE REQUIRING SERVICE — Unplug this product

from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:

÷ When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged. ÷ If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into

the product.

÷ If the product has been exposed to rain or water. ÷ If the product does not operate normally by following

the operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions as an improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal operation.

÷ If the product has been dropped or damaged in any

way.

÷ When the product exhibits a distinct change in

performance — this indicates a need for service.

REPLACEMENT PARTS — When replacement parts

are required, be sure the service technician has used replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as the original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire, electric shock, or other hazards.

SAFETY CHECK — Upon completion of any service or

repairs to this product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to determine that the product is in proper operating condition.

WALL OR CEILING MOUNTING — The product should

not be mounted to a wall or ceiling.

HEAT — The product should be situated away from heat

sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other products (including amplifiers) that produce heat.

Demo Function

The Demo mode starts automatically when the power cord is plugged into the power outlet. Also, when the P.BASS (DEMO) button is pressed for more than 3 seconds in the STANDBY mode, the Demo mode is activated. In the demo mode, various patterns appear on the display. ÷ The Demo mode can be cancelled by pressing the STANDBY/ON

button or function button.

÷ When the

seconds in the demonstrate mode, the demonstration stops and the demonstration function is cancelled. When the demonstration function is cancelled, the demonstration is not carried out even when the power cord is connected again. To resume demonstration function, press the more than 3 seconds in the standby mode.

POWER-CORD CAUTION

Handle the power cord by the plug. Do not pull out the plug by tugging the cord and never touch the power cord when your hands are wet as this could cause a short circuit or electric shock. Do not place the unit, a piece of furniture, etc., on the power cord, or pinch the cord. Never make a knot in the cord or tie it with other cords. The power cords should be routed such that they are not likely to be stepped on. A damaged power cord can cause a fire or give you an electrical shock. Check the power cord once in a while. When you find it damaged, ask your nearest PIONEER authorized service center or your dealer for a replacement.

CAUTIONS REGARDING HANDLING

Location

Install the unit in a well-ventilated location where it will not be exposed to high temperatures or humidity.

Do not install the unit in a location which is exposed to direct rays of the sun, or near stoves or radiators. Excessive heat can adversely affect the cabinet and internal components. Installation of the unit in a damp or dusty environment may also result in a malfunction or an accident (avoid installation near cookers, etc., where the unit may be exposed to oily smoke, steam or heat).

Ventilation

When installing this unit, make sure to leave space around the unit for ventilation to improve heat radiation (at least 30 cm at top, 15 cm at rear, and 15 cm at each side). If not enough space is provided between the unit and walls or other equipment, heat will build up inside, interfering with performance or causing malfunctions.

Precautions regarding installation

÷ Placing and using the unit for long periods on heat-generating

sources will affect performance. Avoid placing the unit on heatgenerating sources.

÷ Install the unit as far away as possible from your TV. Installation in

close proximity to such equipment may cause noise or degradation of the picture.

÷ Such noise may be particularly noticeable when an indoor antenna

is used. In such cases, make use of an outdoor antenna, or turn off the power to the unit.

÷ Please place this unit on a level surface.

Condensation

When this unit is brought into a warm room from previously cold surroundings or when the room temperature rises sharply, condensation may form inside, and the unit may not be able to attain its full performance. To prevent this, allow the unit to stand for about an hour before switching it on, or raise the room temperature gradually.

AVERTISSEMENTS CONCERNANT L'EMPLOI

Emplacement

Installez l'appareil dans un endroit bien aéré, où il ne sera pas exposé à la chaleur ou à l'humidité.

N'installez pas l'appareil dans un endroit exposé aux rayons de soleil directs ou à proximité de poêles ou de radiateurs. Une chaleur excessive peut avoir des conséquences néfastes sur le coffret et sur les composants à intérieur. LOADING BATTERIES INTO THE REMOTE CONTROL UNIT

1 Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the remote

control unit.

2 Insert two AA/R6P dry cell batteries into the battery compartment

in accordance with the indications (ª, ·) inside the compartment.

3 Close the cover of the battery case.

Incorrect use of batteries may cause leakage or rupture. Always be sure to follow these guidelines: A. Always insert batteries into the battery compartment correctly

matching the positive ª and negative · polarities, as shown

by the display inside the compartment. B. Never mix new and used batteries. C. Batteries of the same size may have different voltages,

depending on brand. Do not mix different brands of batteries.

the power button and disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet.

Speaker impedance

Connect speaker systems with a nominal impedance ranging from 6 Ω to 16 Ω.

Precaution for S-A370 and S-A670 : Do not connect these speaker systems to any amplifier other than the one supplied with these systems. Connection to any other amplifier may result in a malfunction or a fire.

Rear speaker system connection (XR-A670 only)

÷ Make sure you connect the plugs properly. ÷ Rear speakers equipped with a pin plug and with nominal impedance

of 16 Ω or more can be connected.

When mounting rear speaker system on a wall

Connecting to a component (DAT, MD etc.) that has an optical digital input jack. ÷ Connect the optical output jack of the unit to the optical input jack

of the connecting component with an optical cable.

÷ A separately sold optical cable is used for optical digital jack

connection. However, only components having the same type of optical jack as this unit can be connected with this type of cable. An adapter for digital hookup with a coaxial digital terminal is also available separatly.

ANTENNA CONNECTIONS

Radio reception is not possible unless the antenna is properly connected. Reception varies from one area to another. Signal broadcast tends to be especially poor in metropolitan areas where there are many tall buildings and in mountainous areas. Proper antenna installation is vital to good reception.

Fully extend the antenna and affix it to a wall, etc.

B External FM antenna installation

Use an external antenna when the signals from the stations are weak and cannot be picked up with the supplied FM antenna. If the sound heard is accompanied by too much noise, connect a 75 Ω coaxial cable.

Indoor AM antenna: Use a vinyl-coated wire 5-6 meters (15-18 feet) long. Secure one end to the AM terminal and the other end to a wall or other high location. Outdoor AM antenna: If reception is still poor even when a lead antenna has been fully extended indoors, stretch out a vinyl-coated wire and secure it outdoors.

NOTE:

Do not detach the AM loop antenna when using the external AM antenna.

The (signal earth) helps reduce noise when an antenna is connected. It is not a safety earth.

7 Fonction de lecture automatique

÷ When the power plug is first connected, the unit automatically

enters the demo (demonstration) display mode. Press the STANDBY / ON switch to cancel the demo mode, then set the clock display to the current time.

÷ Set the clock when it is incorrectly set, or when power to the

unit is cut.

÷ The time is displayed as a 24 hour clock. ÷ The clock cannot be set with the remote control unit.

Example: Setting the clock to 6:40

1. Press the TIMER/CLOCK ADJ button.

2. Turn the S. M. JOG until “CLOCK ADJ” is indicated on the display.

3. Press the SET button.

4. Turn the S. M. JOG to set the "Hour” then press SET button. (“6” is selected in the example)

5. Turn the S. M. JOG to set the “Minute” then press SET button. (“40” is selected in the example)

÷ After connecting to an AC outlet, be sure to set the time. Timer

playback is not possible unless the time has been set.

÷ The time display will flash when the power is restored following

a power failure, or if the power cord has been disconnected. In this case, be sure to set the present time again.

7 To display the clock

Press the DISPLAY button. Clock indications disappear after about 5 seconds.

si l'appareil a été débranché. Dans ce cas, il faut également remettre l'horloge à l'heure.

7 Pour afficher l’heure

1. Select FM or AM with the TUNER/BAND button or BAND button on the remote control unit.

Select the AM or FM broadcasting band. Each press of the button alternates between AM and FM.

[Manual tuning]

Press the – 4 • 1 or + ¡ • ¢ button or 1 ¡ button on the remote control unit and release quickly. The tuning frequency will change by one step each time the button is pressed. Press as many times as necessary to tune in to the desired station. The TUNED indicator ( ) lights up when a station is available.

[Auto tuning]

Press the – 4 • 1 or + ¡ • ¢ button or 1 ¡ button on the remote control unit until the frequency starts to change, then release it. The tuner will automatically search for a station. When one is found, the TUNED indicator ( ) lights. To search for another station, press again. ÷ To interrupt auto tuning, press the – 4 • 1 or + ¡ • ¢

button again.

[High-speed manual tuning]

Press and hold the – 4 • 1 or + ¡ • ¢ button or 1 ¡ button on the remote control unit. = The frequency continues to change until you let go of the button.

NOTES:

Pressing the OPEN/CLOSE button opens the tray even during disc playback. Other discs in the player can be changed during playback, but the disc being played cannot be changed. To change the disc being played, press the DISC CHANGE button; playback stops and the tray opens with the disc which has just been played located on the front left position.

8 cm discs can be played without an adapter. Never attempt to use an adapter.

When one of the DISC select buttons (1 to 3) is pressed, the disc with the selected number starts playing.

The DISC CHANGE button and DISC select buttons are deactivated when no disc is loaded in the tray.

The disc display indicator will light when a disc is loaded, and go off when a disc is not loaded.

When you search for a track by pressing the DISC select buttons (1, 2 or 3) or the DISC CHANGE button, the random playback is canceled and normal playback resumes.

It is not possible to randomly play programmed tracks. (Pressing the RDM button during program playback cancels program playback and starts random playback.)

When the OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed during random playback, the random playback is canceled and normal playback resumes.

Basic operation

1. Press the Eject button (0), load a recorded tape, and then push the cassette door shut.

2. Set Dolby NR to the same position used for recording.

(This function is not available on the XR-A370.) Tapes recorded using Dolby noise reduction should always be played back with the noise reduction system on. Each press of the button alternates ON and OFF as shown below. The

3. Select TAPE I or TAPE II, depending on which you want to playback, with TAPE I/II function button.

When a tape is loaded, the loaded deck will automatically be selected. Each press of the button alternates TAPE I and TAPE II as shown below.

If you press this button when the unit is in standby mode, the power will switch on and the function switches to TAPE. Playback of the last tape played.

4. Press PLAY/PAUSE button (2 or 3) to select direction.

(With the TAPE I on the XR-A370, only 3 forward playback is possible.) Each press of PLAY/PAUSE button alternates the tape direction as shown below.

To stop playback:

Press the STOP button (7) (or press the stop button on the remote control unit).

To fast forward or rewind:

TAPE COUNTER:

The TAPE COUNTER indicates the current location of the tape. The TAPE COUNTER goes up when the tape is moving in the forward direction, and goes down when the tape is moving in the reverse direction. To set the TAPE COUNTER to 0000 , press the STOP button (7) when in the Stop mode. The number also automatically resets to 0000 when a tape is removed.

NOTES:

Do not press the Eject button (0) when the tape is running.

Confirm that the cassette deck has stopped before pressing the Eject button (0).

Auto Stop Mechanism

This mechanism automatically stops the tape when the end of the tape is reached during fast forward or reverse ( – 4 • 1 or + ¡ • ¢).

For relay playback, load tapes into TAPE I and TAPE II. Relay playback is repeated as follows (32 sides maximum):

The music search function may not work correctly when the following tapes are played back.

When you want to copy only one side, break the erase prevention tab of the side you do not want to record, and insert the tape with the side to be recorded facing out.

With this unit, use discs which display the mark shown below (optical digital audio discs).

No other kinds of discs can be played back with this unit.

CARE OF DISCS

÷ When holding discs, do not touch the side the music is on.

STORING DISCS

÷ Always store discs in their cases vertically, avoiding locations with

high heat or humidity, or extremely low temperatures.

÷ Always read and abide by the precautionary notes listed on disc

labels.

CLEANING DISCS

÷ Fingerprints or smudges on the surface of a disc will not directly

affect the playing of a disc. Even still you should always keep your discs clean by wiping them gently with a soft cloth from the inner edge toward the outer periphery.

÷ If a disc becomes very dirty, dip a soft cloth in water, and after

wringing it out well, wipe the dirt away gently. Remove any water drops with another soft, dry cloth.

÷ Do not use record cleaning sprays or anti-static agents on discs.

Never clean discs with benzene, thinner, or other volatile solvents, since damage to the disc surface may result.

HOW TO HANDLE CASSETTE TAPES

Is the tape loose, or is some of the tape sticking out of the cassette?

This can damage the tape. To remove the slack, insert a pencil into the spool and gently wind it. (Fig. A)

Safekeeping

Put the cassette tape back into its case and store it in a location away from magnetic fields, humidity, dust, or oil. (Fig. B)

TIPS ON USING CASSETTE TAPES

÷ Leader tape (which does not allow sound to be recorded on it) is

provided at the beginning of a cassette tape. Start recording after allowing the tape to run for approx. 5 seconds so that the leader tape moves past the recording head.

÷ Forwarding or reversing the cassette tapes before recording

prevents shock to the unit caused by slack.

Do not use tapes longer than 90 minutes.

Since tapes longer than 90 minutes are extremely thin, they easily jam in the pinch roller and capstan, and they are susceptible to other trouble such as irregular winding. Try not to use them with this unit.

How can you prevent accidental erasure?

When the erase prevention tab on the cassette is broken with the tip of a screwdriver, it will not be possible to activate the recording function even by pressing ¶, so valuable recordings will not be erased by accident. (Fig. C)

When you want to record again on a cassette with broken erasure prevention tabs, cover the hole with adhesive tape. (Fig. D)

En raison de leur minceur extrême, les bandes avec un temps de lecture supérieur à 90 minutes s'emmêlent facilement autour des galets d'entraînement et des cabestans et sont susceptibles de causer d'autres désagréments comme un enroulement irrégulier. Essayez de ne pas les utiliser avec cet appareil.

Comment prévenir un effacement accidentel?

Quand la languette de protection contre l'enregistrement est brisée avec le bout d'un tournevis, la fonction d'enregistrement ne peut pas être activée, même en pressant •, ce qui évite tout effacement accidentel d'enregistrements précieux. (Fig. C).

To change all of the timer settings, start over again, inputting the settings you want.

If you make a mistake when setting the timer

Go to the next item and continue setting all the items until you finish. Then use the “To change timer settings” procedure to change the setting that is incorrect.

NOTES:

Once the time of the timer is set, you can reactivate it by merely following steps 12 and 13 in the STANDBY mode without setting the time once again.

Timer recording settings are reset after recording has finished.

When the timer recording is set, the VOL level is automatically set to MIN.

When the ON time is set, the OFF time is set automatically to 1 hour later.

AUTO SLEEP

or recording, or when a CD is playing, “AUTO SLEEP” is set.

÷ AUTO SLEEP lets you set the unit so that power automatically

NOTES:

If you press the SLEEP button during Sleep operation, the time remaining until the power turns off is displayed. Do not press the SLEEP button when the remaining time is displayed. If you do, the settings will change and the sleep timer cannot function properly.

Cleaning the head

The heads, capstans and pinch rollers are parts which are liable to become dirty quite easily. If the heads are dirty, the high frequency components of the sound will not be reproduced and the stereo balance will be impaired, resulting in a deterioration of sound quality. It is therefore recommended that the heads be cleaned regularly.

1. Turn the power off.

2. Press Eject section (0) to open the cassette door.

3. Dip a cleaning swab into head cleaning fluid and use it to wipe the head, capstans, and pinch rollers. Wait 2-3 minutes until the cleaning fluid dries.

NOTE:

This unit uses a head-slant standby system, with the result that the heads are mounted at an angled position.

Nettoyer la section de la tête

Demagnetizing the cassette deck heads

The deck heads may become magnetized after the deck has been used for a long period of time, or if a magnet or other magnetized object (screwdriver, etc.) is brought near the heads. Magnetization of the heads results in increased noise and reduced ability to reproduce high-frequency sounds. In this case, please use a commercially available head demagnetizer at regular intervals to eliminate the magnetic field on the heads. When using a head demagnetizer, turn this unit’s power switch ON. In order to prevent adverse effects on the receiver and speakers, however, be sure to turn down the receiver's volume control to its lowest position, and disconnect any headphones from the headphones jack. For details, consult the instructions accompanying your head demagnetizer.

Maintenance of external surfaces

÷ Use a polishing cloth or dry cloth to wipe off dust and dirt. ÷ When the surfaces are very dirty, wipe with a soft cloth dipped in

some neutral cleanser diluted five or six times with water and wrung out well, then wipe again with a dry cloth. Do not use furniture wax or cleaners.

÷ Never use thinners, benzene, insecticide sprays or other chemicals

on or near this unit, since these will corrode the surfaces.
