The Philips AVENT Digital Thermometer Set accurately and conveniently
measures your baby’s body temperature orally, axially and rectally. The
regular pacier and the pacier thermometer are suitable for use with
children aged 0-12 months. The digital exible-tip thermometer is suitable
for children and adults of all ages.
The unique combination of a pacier thermometer and a digital, exible-
tip thermometer offers you the choice of adapting the temperature
measurement method to suit your baby.
The storage box contains three items:
A Philips AVENT pacier thermometer to reliably measure your
baby’s temperature. It is very convenient to use and comfortable for
your baby.
A regular Philips AVENT Freeow pacier to let your baby get used
to the shape.
A Philips AVENT digital exible-tip thermometer to measure your
-
baby’s body temperature axially or rectally if you want additional
reassurance.
Make sure you follow the safety guidelines when using these items so that
you do not expose your child to any risk.
Use the pacier thermometer to obtain a temperature indication. Use
the exible-tip thermometer to determine the actual body temperature.
If in any doubt, consult your doctor.
Important
General
The symbols on the thermometers have the following meaning:
-
1 This symbol indicates that you have to read the user manual carefully
before you use the appliance. Save the user manual for future
reference (Fig. 1).
2 This symbol is to identify a type BF applied part complying with
UL60601-1 (Fig. 2).
ENGLISH7
Danger
Never attach ribbons or cords to a pacier, your child may be
strangled by them.
Keep the protection caps for the nipples away from children to avoid
suffocation.
Inspect the paciers carefully before each use, especially when the
-
child has teeth. Pull the paciers in all directions. Throw away at the
rst signs of damage or weakness.
Warning
Do not immerse the measurement unit of the pacier thermometer
in water or any other liquid. Never sterilize or boil the measurement
unit.
Never leave your child when you are measuring its temperature with
-
the pacier thermometer or the exible-tip thermometer.
The thermometers are not intended for use by persons (including
-
children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack
of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given
supervision or instruction concerning use of the thermometers by a
person responsible for their safety.
Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with
the thermometers.
Never use the pacier thermometer measurement unit separately to
avoid injury.
Never use the pacier thermometer as a regular pacier.
Battery compar tment covers must be replaced properly if removed. If
-
loose, they may choke your child.
Caution
We recommend replacing the regular pacier after 4 weeks, for safety
and hygiene reasons.
Always sterilize or boil the nipple, shield and protection cap of the
-
pacier and of the pacier thermometer after use (see chapter
‘Cleaning’).
Do not leave the pacier, pacier thermometer and the exible-tip
thermometer in direct sunlight or near a source of heat.
ENGLISH8
Do not leave the paciers in disinfectant (‘sterilizing solution’) for
-
longer than recommended, as this may weaken the nipple.
Do not drop the thermometers or expose them to shocks.
Do not bend or disassemble the measurement unit of the
-
pacier thermometer or the tip of the exible-tip thermometer
Do not use the thermometer if the display shows the battery symbol.
This means that the battery is low and the measurements will be
inaccurate.
Only use these thermometers to measure human body
temperatures.
Never dip the nipples in sweet substances or medication, your child
may get tooth decay.
In the event that either pacier becomes lodged in the mouth, DO
-
NOT PANIC. The paciers cannot be swallowed and are designed to
cope with such an event. Remove from the mouth with care, as
gently as possible.
When not in use, store the pacier, the pacier thermometer and the
-
exible-tip thermometer in the storage box supplied.
Do not use this Philips AVENT pacier thermometer in combination
-
with parts of the old Philips pacier thermometer (SCH530).
Before rst use
Clean the pacier, pacier thermometer and the exible-tip thermometer
before rst use. See chapter ‘Cleaning’.
Using the appliance
Ways to use the thermometers
The most convenient way to measure your baby’s temperature is to use
the pacier thermometer according to this user manual. This method
gives a reliable indication. If you need additional reassurance (for example
if the rst measured temperature is above 100.4°F), you can use the
digital exible-tip thermometer to take an axial (underarm) or a rectal
(anal) measurement.
Note: Oral measurements are usually 1°F to 2°F lower than the actual body
temperature.
ENGLISH9
Childrens’ temperature
The temperature of a child is normally between 97.7 and 99.5°F.
However, you have to keep in mind that a child’s temperature varies
depending on age, activity, time of day, etc. Also remember that some
illnesses do not have high temperature as a symptom.Temperature
measurement should not be a substitute for consulting your physician.
When reporting your child’s temperature to a professional, state the
measurement method.
Pacier thermometer
The most convenient way to measure your baby’s temperature is to use
the pacier thermometer. This is also the most comfortable method for
the baby.
Do not use the pacier thermometer for 30 minutes after the baby has
had hot or cold drinks, as this causes an inaccurate measurement.
Never use the pacier thermometer as a regular pacier.
1 Check if the measurement unit of the pacier thermometer is
rmly attached to the pacier (i.e. turned completely to the closed
lock position).
If the measurement unit is not rmly attached to the pacier, the
measurement may be inaccurate and the measurement unit
may become a suffocation hazard.
2 Place the pacier in the baby’s mouth for approx. 3 minutes to let
the thermometer warm up.
If you do not do this, the measured temperature may be inaccurate.
3 Press the on/off button I to turn on the thermometer.
Note: You can either press the on/off button while the pacier is still in your
baby’s mouth, or you can remove the pacier, press the on/off button and
place the pacier back into your baby’s mouth.
4 Leave the pacier in the baby’s mouth until the thermometer beeps.
ENGLISH10
See section ‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the meaning of
the beeps.
,
The display now shows the measured temperature and the °F
indication lights up continuously.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the display
shows ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside the temperature
range. Turn off the thermometer, check if it is correctly positioned and turn it
on again to restart the measurement.
5 Remove the pacier thermometer from the baby’s mouth.
Do not leave the child alone with the pacier thermometer.
6 Press the on/off button I to turn off the thermometer.
Note: Turn off the thermometer after use to save battery power. If you do not
turn off the thermometer, it turns off automatically after 10 minutes.
Digital exible-tip thermometer
Do not insert the exible-tip thermometer into the ear or nose.
The pacier thermometer is just as accurate as the digital exible-tip
thermometer and is more convenient to use. However, because rectal
measurement is inherently more accurate than oral measurement, the
digital exible-tip thermometer gives you an opportunity to reassure
yourself.
For a rectal measurement of a baby’s temperature, proceed as follows:
1 Remove the protection cap from the digital exible-tip
thermometer.
Make sure that the metal probe of the exible tip is still rmly attached to
the thermometer.
Tip: If available, use special plastic hygienic covers to cover the tip of the
thermometer (these are available from most drugstores).
2 Lubricate the tip of the thermometer (or hygienic cover) with a
water-soluble jelly.
Water-soluble jelly is available from most drugstores.
ENGLISH 11
Note: Do not use petroleum jelly.
3 Press the on/off button I to turn on the thermometer.
4 Lie the baby on its stomach or its side.
5 With one hand, separate the baby’s buttocks. With the other hand,
gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2
inch) into the rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
Hold the baby rmly so that it cannot turn while the thermometer is
inserted.
Never push the exible tip too far into the anus.
6 Keep the thermometer in place until it beeps.
See section ‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the meaning of
the beeps.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the display
shows ‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside the temperature
range. Turn off the thermometer, check if it is correctly positioned and turn it
on again to restart the measurement.
7 Remove the thermometer and read the display.
8 Press the on/off button I to turn off the thermometer.
Note: Turn off the thermometer after use to save battery power. If you do not
turn off the thermometer, it turns off automatically after 10 minutes.
Measuring the temperature of older children
For older children and adults, the digital exible-tip thermometer can also
be used to measure temperature orally (in the mouth) or axially (in the
armpit).
Do not use the exible-tip thermometer for oral temperature
measurements on babies.
If the thermometer has been used rectally or in the armpit without
hygienic covers, do not use it for oral measurement anymore for
hygienic reasons, not even after cleaning.
