The XTR2 Field Programmer allows you to connect a PC to the
XTR2 control via USB for field programming and diagnostic
data download. The Field Programmer application features a
simple graphical interface for easy control programming.
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
The following hardware and software is required to install the
XTR2 Field Programmer application:
• Licensed copy of XTR2 Field Programmer installation file

To install the XTR2 Field Programmer application:
1. Locate the FPA_Installer.exe file included with your Field
Programmer installation package. Double-click on the file
to begin installation.
2. The InstallShield Wizard will appear, and will walk you
through the rest of the installation process. Click Next
to continue, and follow the prompts to complete the
installation.

Do not connect XTR2 before installing the field
programmer.
4. Launch the Field Programmer application by doubleclicking the desktop icon or selecting the Start menu item.

FIELD PROGRAMMER FEATURES
The Field Programmer application features an easy to use
graphical interface designed to complement the look and feel
of the XTR2 control.
The main screen used when programming is the Master
Programming Setting screen (see Figure 2). This screen can
be divided into three main interface areas: the Master Settings
Menu, Data Transfer Icons, and the Programming area.

3. When installation is complete, the Pentair Field
Programmer shortcut will appear on your desktop and in
your Start menu.

Master Settings Menu
The Master Settings Menu organizes master settings
parameters into several categories, listed below. Click the
menu item to display the parameter set.
Improperly adjusting master settings may cause
the system to operate incorrectly.
NOTE: Please refer to the Fleck 5800 or 5810/5812 XTR2 Service
Manuals for complete master settings procedures and
parameter descriptions.
• format: Contains initial control setup and format
settings.
• valve: Contains settings specific to the valve and system.
• regen: Contains settings specific to the selected
regenerant flow.
• relay: Contains auxiliary relay settings.
• diagnostic: Displays diagnostic information that can be
downloaded from the control.
• summary: Displays a summary of all programmed
settings.

Data Transfer Icons
The data transfer icons at the bottom of the Field Programmer
window enable you to transfer data between the XTR2 control
and the Field Programmer application, or between the Field
Programmer and your PC. The following icons appear at the
bottom of the screen at all times regardless of the parameters
selected.
Set Control Time
• Sets the time and day of week on the control to match the
current time set on your PC.
Get Diagnostic Parameters
• Downloads diagnostic data from the XTR2 control to the
Field Programmer application; can be viewed by clicking
the diagnostic menu item.
Reset
editing. Settings change from blue to light gray when selected.
Settings that are displayed in dark gray are not editable based
on current programming settings. Click anywhere in the Field
Programmer Master Programming Settings window to deselect a selected setting.
The Field Programmer software accepts settings inputs
differently depending on the setting type. The Field
Programmer will display the appropriate options for the
selected setting when clicked.
Selection Menu
Settings with a limited choice of values will display a menu
showing each value available for selection. Select the
appropriate value from the choices listed.
Settings Selection Menu
• Resets any settings changed in the Field Programmer
application to their default settings.
NOTE: Clicking the Reset button in the Field
Programmer application does not reset any
parameters in the XTR2 control.
Open File
• Displays an Open File window that allows you to load a
saved programming settings configuration file into the
Field Programmer application.
Save Form
• Displays a Save window that allows you to save all
settings programmed in the Field Programmer
application to a configuration file stored on your PC.
Upload Program Settings
• Uploads all parameters set in the Field Programmer
application to the XTR2 control.
Master Settings Programming
The Master Settings displayed in the Field Programmer
Master Programming Settings window correspond to the
settings available to be programmed in the XTR2 control. The
displayed settings change depending on the Master Settings
Menu item selected, or depending on the selected value of
other settings. Please refer to the Fleck 5800 or 5810/5812 XTR2 Service Manuals for complete master settings parameter
descriptions.
Updating Master Settings
Field Programmer Master Settings are displayed with a label
describing the setting, as well as its current value. Click
either the label or the settings value to select a setting for

Text Field
Settings that accept alphanumeric text will display a cursor
when clicked. Use your computer keyboard to enter the
desired information into the setting field.

On/Off Settings
Settings with only two options (i.e., either an ON or OFF state)
can be toggled from one state to the other by clicking the
setting.

Ranged Values
Settings that accept a range of numerical values will display
up and down arrows on either side of the setting value. Click
the arrows to increment the value up or down as necessary, or
click the displayed value and type the desired value into the
field.

Connecting to the XTR2 Control
1. From the XTR2 Control Home screen, press the Settings
button to display the Settings screen, then press the
Settings button again. A warning message appears.
2. Press to continue to the Password screen. The
Password screen displays a numeric keypad. Enter the
master settings password 1201 and press to continue to
the main Master Settings screen.
3. From the main Master Settings screen press the format
button to display the Format screen.

6. Connect the other end of the USB cable to the PC with the
Field Programmer software installed.
NOTE: Do not remove USB cable from computer or control
while connected and transferring data.
7. Upon initial connection of the control to the PC, your
PC may configure the drivers necessary for connection
to the control. Please wait until driver configuration is
complete before continuing. A connection established
message appears on the control screen when a successful
connection to the PC has been made.
NOTE: Pressing the Settings button on the XTR2 control
will disconnect the control from the PC and return the
display to the Master Settings screen. Do not press
until you are ready to disconnect.
8. If you have not already done so, launch the Field
Programmer software on your PC by double-clicking on
the Pentair Field Programmer icon or selecting the menu
item from the Start menu. The Field Programmer Master
Programming Settings window appears (see Figure 2).
9. When a successful connection between the PC and control
has been made, the USB icon in the upper-right corner of
the Field Programmer window turns green and displays
the message XTR2 detected. You can now begin
transferring data.

5. When the USB screen appears, connect a USB cable to the
USB port on the control circuit board.

Uploading Programmed Settings to the XTR2
Control
1. After all programming within the Field Programmer is
complete, click the icon in the Field Programmer
application to upload all settings configured in the Field
Programmer to the XTR2 control. A small window will
appear showing progress of the data transfer. The
application will display a message when transfer is
complete. Click the message to clear it from the screen.

2. Click the icon in the Field Programmer application to
set the time and day of week in the XTR2 control to match
the time currently set on your PC. Click the communication complete message that appears to clear it from the
screen.
Downloading Diagnostic Data to the Field
Programmer Application
1. After establishing a connection between the Field
Programmer application and the XTR2 control, click the
icon in the Field Programmer application to download
diagnostic data from the control. Click the communication complete message that appears to clear it from the
screen.

2. Click the diagnostic menu item from the Master Settings
menu in the Field Programmer application. Diagnostic data,
including a graph displaying daily average water usage from
the previous four weeks, is displayed in the application
window.

NOTE: Diagnostic data displayed in the Field Programmer
application is read only and is cleared upon exit of the
application.
Saving and Loading Programming Configurations
Master Settings Programming configurations can be saved
to a file on your PC for storage and easy retrieval. Common
configurations can then be quickly and easily applied to control
valves before being sent out to the field for installation.
To save a programming configuration:
1. Click the icon in the Field Programmer application. The
Save window appears.
2. Type a name into the File Name field and click the Save
button to save the file. If necessary, specify the location on
your PC where you would like to save the file.
3. Click the Save button to save the file.
4. A success message appears when the file has been
successfully saved. Click the OK button to clear the
message.

To load a saved configuration file:
1. Click the icon in the Field Programmer application. The
Open window appears.
2. Navigate to the location on your PC where your saved
configuration file is stored. Select the file and click the Open
button. The saved configuration is loaded into the Field
Programmer application.
3. Upload the saved configuration to the control by following
the procedure titled "Uploading Programmed Settings to the
XTR2 Control" above.
Disconnecting from the Control
When all programming is complete, the XTR2 control will
display a message stating that it is OK to disconnect from the
PC.

NOTE: Do not press or disconnect the control until the
above message is displayed on the XTR2 control.
Press the button on the XTR2 control to exit the USB screen
and return to the Master Settings screen. Press the settings review button to review the settings that were uploaded to the
control or press the button to return to the Home screen. The
control can now resume normal operation.
