• Do not touch the front of the lens.
• When taking pictures, make sure your footing is stable and there is no danger of colliding with another person, a ball etc.
Basic
Exposure (P57)
• The exposure is automatically adjusted to the appropriate exposure on this unit (AE=Auto Exposure). However, depending on the recording conditions such as when there is backlight, the recorded picture will be dark.
In this case, compensate the exposure. This allows you to take bright pictures.
Focusing (P33, 62, 68)
• The picture is automatically focused on this unit (AF=Auto Focus). However, the picture may not be properly focused in the following cases. The focus range is 30 cm to (Wide), 2 m to (Tele). – When there are both near and distant
subjects in a scene.
– When there is dirt or dust on glass
between the lens and the subject.
– When there are illuminated or glittering
objects around the subject. – When taking a picture in dark places. – When the subject is moving fast. – When the scene has low contrast. – When recording a very bright subject. – When taking close-up pictures of a subject. – When jitter occurs.
Try using prefocus, the AF/AE lock technique or [AF MACRO]. For information on the face detection function, read P101.
Colour (P93, 95)
• The colour of the subject will differ if the colour of the light surrounding it differs such as when the light comes from sunlight or halogen lighting. However, this unit automatically adjusts the hue to one close to real life. (auto white balance)
Set the white balance if you want to change the hue you get with auto white balance. Adjust the white balance finely for additional white balance adjustment.

Taking pictures using the automatic function (Intelligent Auto Mode)

The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recommend this mode for beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily.
The following functions work automatically in the intelligent auto mode [ ].
Stabilizer function (P104)
Jitter is detected and stabilized.
Intelligent ISO sensitivity (P96)
The camera will automatically set the appropriate ISO sensitivity and the shutter speed to the movement of the subject and the surrounding brightness.
Face detection (P101)
The camera can automatically detect a person’s face and will adjust the focus and exposure to fit that face no matter what portion of the picture it is in.

Recording guide line
When you align the subject on the horizontal and vertical guide lines or the cross point of these lines, you can take pictures with well-designed composition by viewing the size, the slope and the balance of the subject.
A []: This is used when dividing the
entire screen into 3k3 for taking pictures with a well-balanced composition.
B []: This is used when you want to
position the subject at the exact centre of the screen.
Histogram
A histogram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. It allows you to easily check a picture’s exposure.
• It is very useful if manual adjustments of the lens aperture and shutter speed are available, especially in those situations where automatic exposure may be difficult due to uneven lighting. Using the histogram feature allows you to get the maximum performance from your camera.
A When the values are concentrated on the
left, the picture is under exposed.
B When the values are distributed evenly,
the exposure is proper and the brightness is well-balanced.
C When the values are concentrated on the
right, the picture is overexposed.

Taking Close-up Pictures

This mode allows you to take close-up pictures of a subject, e.g. when taking pictures of flowers. You can take pictures of a subject as close as 1 cm from the lens by rotating the zoom lever upmost to Wide (1k). As you rotate the zoom lever towards Tele, the distance from the subject that you can take close-up pictures increases in steps up to a maximum of 2 m. (6k to 11k)
Press the AF macro/focus switch button.
• The AF macro icon [ ] appears.
Tele-macro function
If you zoom to a magnification of 12k to 18k (close to Tele), you can take a picture of an object that is only 1 m from the lens. (The tele-macro icon [ ] appears.) It is convenient when taking close-up pictures of flowers blooming near the ground while standing up or when taking close-up pictures of insects from a distant position.

• The zoom magnification values will change when using the extra optical zoom.

Page 63
Advanced (Recording pictures)
• We recommend using a tripod and the self-timer in macro mode.
• When a subject is close to the camera, the effective focus range (depth of field) is significantly narrowed. Therefore, if the distance between the camera and the subject is changed after focusing on the subject, it may become difficult to focus on it again.
• In tele macro mode, the depth of field is narrowed and camera jitter occurs easier than usual. Therefore, when you cannot use a tripod, we recommend taking pictures with a brightness equivalent to having the aperture value set to F4.0 or a higher number and the shutter speed is set to 1/125th of a second or faster to keep the depth of field and the performance of the stabilizer function.
• If the distance between the camera and the subject is beyond the focus range of the camera, the picture may not be properly focused even if the focus indication lights.
• AF Macro gives priority to a subject close to the camera. Therefore, if the distance between the camera and the subject is more than 1 m it takes longer to focus than in programme AE mode [ ].
• The available flash range is about 30 cm to
6.0 m (Wide). (When the ISO sensitivity is set to [AUTO].) We recommend setting the flash to Forced OFF [ ] when you take pictures at close range.
• If you focus on the subject at 2 m or less distant position with tele-macro function when setting the optical zoom magnification in 18k and then rotate the zoom lever for setting the optical zoom magnification to 11k or less, the subject becomes unfocused.
• When you take pictures at close range, the resolution of the periphery of the picture may decrease slightly. This is not a malfunction.
• If the lens becomes dirty with fingerprints or dust, the lens may not be able to focus on the subject correctly.
