Step 7
Now you’re ready to set up your home network.
Step 7a. To set up a network using a wired computer or laptop:
1. Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Chrome) on the computer that’s
connected to the smart router and you’ll be automatically directed to a welcome page.
2. To establish your personalized network, follow the steps on-screen. If you are replacing a router, you should
use your old router’s network name (SSID) and password. This will automatically connect all your wireless
devices. Or, if you’d like to create a brand new network, follow the steps on-screen to create a new case-sensitive
personalized network name (SSID) and password. For this smart router you will need a password, you
cannot opt out of creating one.
Step 7b. To set up a network using a wireless computer, laptop or device:
1. Go to your WiFi settings and select the default network name (SSID) listed on the smart router. Not sure
where to find your WiFi settings on your device? Step 8, #1 can help.
2. Enter the default password.
3. Open your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Chrome) on the computer that’s
connected to the smart router and you’ll be automatically directed to a welcome page.
4. To establish your personalized network, follow the steps on-screen. If you are replacing a router, you should
use your old router’s network name (SSID) and password. This will automatically connect all your wireless
devices. Or, if you’d like to create a brand new network name, or if you’re setting up a router for the first time,
follow the steps on-screen to create a new case-sensitive personalized network name (SSID) and password. For
this smart router you will need a password, you cannot opt out of creating one.
5. Go to your WiFi settings on your device. Select the personalized network name (SSID) you just created and
enter your password.
Now move to Step 8 to connect your wireless devices to the smart router or test out existing
devices previously connected to your old router.
Step 8
To connect wireless devices to your new home network:
1. Select your new personalized network name (SSID) from your wireless settings. Depending on your device,
you’ll access wireless settings by going to:
a) iPhone: “Preferences” and “WiFi”
b) Android device: “Settings” > “Wireless Networks” or “WiFi”
c) PC: The Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray
d) Mac: The Airport icon in the menu bar
e) When connecting other devices, like gaming consoles, wireless printers, etc., use the WPS push button
method (see device’s owner’s manual).
2. Enter your password and click “connect”.
To connect devices that don’t have wireless capabilities:
Connect your computer to one of the router’s yellow “LAN” ports using another Ethernet cable.
Managing your network at router.optimum.net.
See which devices are connected, personalize your network name (SSID), manage more features or change
your wireless network password and settings at any time.
Step 5
• Plug the modem into the electrical outlet or your existing surge protector. If you have a battery
backup, reconnect it to the modem. Now you’re all done with the wiring.
• You’ll know it’s on when the lights begin to flicker. Give the cable modem about a
minute to power up.

Step 6
Make sure the modem is on before proceeding:
• Plug in the smart router to the electrical outlet or surge protector. If the power light is not on,
press the power button located on the back of the router.
• Wait five minutes while the smart router checks for network updates before moving to Step 7.

Troubleshooting
Having trouble getting online? Try this first.
• Check your wireless settings on your computer or device to make sure you’re connected to your personalized
network name (SSID).
• Try restarting by following these quick steps.
•
Unplug the modem from the electrical outlet or surge protector. Once unplugged, all the lights on the
modem should go off. If the lights are still on after you disconnect it, look to see if there is a battery backup,
and disconnect it now.
•
Unplug the smart router from the electrical outlet or surge protector.
•
Reconnect the modem to the electrical outlet or surge protector.
•
Wait a few minutes until it fully restarts and lights up. If you use a battery backup, reconnect it to the modem now.
•
Reconnect the smart router to its electrical outlet or surge protector. You should be up and running in a few
seconds.
Power light on your smart router is off? Make sure your power adapter is connected to both the smart router and
the electrical outlet or surge protector.
Internet or Ethernet port lights on your smart router off? Make sure your Ethernet cable connections are secure
on the smart router, modem and computer.
Step 1
Before you start, you’ll need your Optimum ID and password. Don’t know if you have an Optimum ID?
Step 1a. Turn to Channel 903 to find out if there is already an Optimum ID associated with your account.
•
If you already have an Optimum ID and password, please go to optimum.net, select the
“Remember Me” option and sign in to your Optimum account.
•
If you need to retrieve your Optimum ID or password, go to optimum.net/myid. Sign in to your
Optimum account using this information, making sure to select the “Remember Me” option.
•
If you do not have an Optimum ID, go to optimum.net/id to create one. Once you’ve created your
ID, sign into your Optimum account, making sure to select the “Remember Me” option.
Step 1b. You’ll also need your current wireless network name (SSID)
and password. If you only have a wireless network name, but no
password, or if you are setting up a router for the first time, you’ll
need the default network name (SSID) and password, which can
be found on the smart router, shown in the image to the right. You’ll
need this information again in Step 7.
Tip: For the best possible wireless signal, place your smart router close to where you usually use your computer
or wireless device, and make sure it’s not obstructed by anything, such as furniture. Also, please keep it in the
upright standing position, as shown in the image to the left.

• Unplug the modem from the electrical outlet or surge protector.
• If you have a battery backup connected to the modem, disconnect it now. You will know you have a
battery backup if the lights on your modem are still on after you’ve unplugged the modem.

• If you have an existing router, disconnect the existing Ethernet cable between the modem and
router. Then unplug the router from the electrical outlet or surge protector and disconnect any
devices connected to the router.
• If you do not have an existing router, disconnect your current Ethernet cable between the modem
and computer.
Step 4
• Retrieve the yellow Ethernet cable and new smart router from the box. Connect the yellow
Ethernet cable from the modem to the red Ethernet WAN port of the smart router.
• Using a wireless computer, laptop or device to set up your smart router? Skip ahead to Step 5.
• Using a wired computer or laptop to set up the smart router? Connect your existing Ethernet cable
between any open yellow Ethernet LAN port on the smart router and the computer .

Paso 1
Antes de comenzar, necesita su identificación Optimum y contraseña. ¿No sabe si tiene una
identificación Optimum?

Paso 1b. También necesitará su SSID actual y su contraseña. Si sólo
tiene un nombre de red inalámbrica pero no tiene una contraseña o si
está instalando un router por primera vez, necesitará el nombre
predeterminado (SSID) de la red y contraseña, que puede encontrar
en el router inteligente, que mostramos en la imagen a la derecha.
Necesitará esta información nuevamente en el paso 7.
Nota: Para la mejor señal inalámbrica coloque su router inteligente cerca de donde suele utilizar su computadora
o aparato inalámbrico. Y asegúrase que no esté obstruido por algún mueble o cualquier otra cosa. También,

Ahora siga al paso 8 para conectar sus aparatos inalámbricos al router inteligente o intente con
aparatos conectados previamente al antiguo router.
Paso 8
Para conectar aparatos inalámbricos a su nuevo hogar:
1. Seleccione su nuevo nombre (SSID) personalizado en sus “preferencias” inalámbricas. Según su aparato
inalámbrico, tendrá acceso a las preferencias inalámbricas en:
a) iPhone: “Preferencias” y “WiFi”
b) Aparato Android: “Preferencias” y “Wireless Networks”
c) PC: el ícono Wireless Network Connection en la bandeja del sistema
d) Mac: el ícono de Airport en el menú del navegador
e) Cuando conecte otros aparatos como consolas de juego, impresoras inalámbricas, etc. use el método
del botón de comando WPS (Consultar el manual del usuario del aparato).
2. Ingrese su contraseña y oprima el botón de “connect”.
Para conectar aparatos que no tienen capacidad inalámbrica:
Conectar la computadora a uno de los puertos LAN amarillo del router utilizando otro cable Ethernet.
Es fácil administrar su red en router.optimum.net.
Observe cuáles aparatos están conectados, personalizar el nombre de la red (SSID), controlar sus
configuraciones, o cambiar su contraseña y preferencias de la red inalámbrica en cualquier momento.
Paso 5
• Enchufe el módem al tomacorriente o protector de sobre voltaje. Si tiene una batería de
emergencia, vuelva a conectarla al módem. Todo el cableado ya está listo.
• El módem demorará alrededor de un minuto en reiniciarse y las luces se encenderán.
• Si el módem no se enciende, asegúrese que todos los cables estén conectados firmemente.

Asegurar que el módem esté prendido antes de seguir.
• Enchufe el router inteligente al tomacorriente o al protector de sobre voltaje. Si la luz de encendido
no está prendida, pulse el botón de encendido localizada en la parte de atrás del router.
• Espere cinco minutos para que el router inteligente verifique las actualizaciones de la red antes de
continuar con el paso 7.

• Si tiene un router, desconecte el cable Ethernet existente entre el módem y el router. Luego,

• Recupere el cable Ethernet amarillo y el nuevo router inteligente de la caja. Conecte el cable

Soluciones simples, si encuentra algún inconveniente.
¿Tiene problemas para conectarse? Intente primero esto.
• Verifique sus preferencias inalámbricas en su computadora o aparato asegurándose que esté conectado a su red
personalizada (SSID).
• Intente comenzar de nuevo siguiendo estos pasos:
•
Desenchufe el módem del tomacorriente o protector de sobre voltaje. Una vez desenchufado, todas las luces del
módem se deben apagar. Si las luces aún se encuentran encendidas después de desconectarlo, mire si hay una
batería para emergencias y desconéctela.
•

Espere unos minutos hasta que se reinicie por completo y las luces se enciendan. Si usa una batería para
emergencias, vuelva a conectarla al módem ahora.
•
Reconecte el router inteligente al tomacorriente o protector de sobre voltaje. Todo debe encenderse y funcionar en
unos pocos segundos.
¿La luz de encendido del router inteligente está apagada? Asegúrese que el adaptador de corriente esté
conectado tanto al router como al tomacorriente o protector de sobre voltaje.
¿Están apagadas las luces del puerto Ethernet o internet en el router? Verifique que el cable Ethernet esté bien
conectado en el router inteligente, el módem y la computadora.
