
Getting to Know my Vision Tester

1. Find power cord and plug in!
2. Turn on Vision Tester by pushing in on/off button on back of
tester
3. Open flap on either side of tester
4. Press "forehead" light toggle in front of tester to see if light
goes on
5. Look through upper lenses in front of machine (far vision)
6. Turn dial on side of machine and note different slides. Some
will be right side up and some upside down. Why?
7. Look through lower lenses in front of machine (near vision).
8. Turn dial on side of machine and note different slides. Some
will be right side up and some upside down. Why?
9. Look at the back of the machine: there are a series of buttons.
Find the one labeled as "right", find the one labeled as "left"

and the one labeled as "far/near".
10. Push in the Right button, and have the far/near button in the
far position.
11. Look through the upper lenses in the front of the machine.
What do you see?
12. Now release the right button and depress the left button. What
do you see?

13. The tester automatically provides for monocular vision by
occluding one eye.
14. For near vision screening, depress the near/far button and the
right and left buttons.
15. Press light toggle with forehead and look down into tester "like
you are reading a book"
16. Near vision screening is binocular, or "two eyes"
17. Rotate drum until you see a vision tester slide that is right side
up with rows of symbols.
18. Using the "What's in my Vision Tester?" hand-out, with the
far/near button out, and the dial on Far 1, look in the tester and
record what you see, i.e. what is on the slide, is it upside down
or upright. Continue this process for all 12 slide positions in
the Far position, then repeat with the Far/Near button
depressed, and both right and left depressed. Start with Near
3 and record findings. There are only 12 slide positions, for
both near and far.
19. Use this tool to identify what usable slides you may have, and
the current slide positions. Note those locations, i.e. Far 1
HOTV, Far 2 Tumbling E, Near 3 HOTV, Near 4 Tumbling E.
20. Time to write your procedure!

Vision Screening Procedure using Vision Tester
1.HaveTester on corner of table.
2.Student to sit in front of tester. Nurse on right side of
tester for easy access to knob and window.
3.Turn on vision tester
4.Depress "right" eye button. Have Near/Far button in "far"
position.
