PANEL MOUNT INFRARED COMMUNICATIONS MODULE
INSTRUCTION
SHEET
M-3147
The OM-EL-PANEL-IR moduleconverts serial data between electrical and InfraRed formats. Idealfor applications that require remote control or dangerous environments where cables would be a safety risk, OM-EL-PANEL-IR employs the IrDA infra-red communications standard to achieve reliable transfer of data. The snap-inintegral bezel makes installation quickand easy.
Uses IrDA Communication Standard
Connects to Microcontroller, UART,
or EasyLog Module
Half-duplex Communications

Locate the module by passing it through the front of the panel cut-out and gently push until the rear of the bezel is flush with the panel. DO NOT PUSH ON THE SCREEN. The snap-in lugs will now automatically hold the module firmly in position.
PIN FUNCTION
1. Polarity Selects whether the transmit/receivelines usepositive ornegative logic.
2. Disable Disablesthe receiver/transmitter. Connect to0V todisable.
3. N/C Noconnection. Do not connectanything tothis pin.

If the PANEL-IRis solely used for receivingdata thenTxD shouldbeconnected to V+ viaa 47kresistor.
APPLICATIONNOTES
Communication can take place atdistances from0m(i.e. "nose-to-nose") to1m. Theredwindow of the OM-EL-PANEL-IR module should bepointed atthe window of the device atthe other endof the InfraRedlink. The InfraRed light beamspans approximately 30°,so the twodevices do nothave tobe directly aligned. Thereshould however be a clear line of sight between the twodevices. At closerange, communicationis more forgiving and small obstacles will not affect the link.

Protocol
The OM-EL-PANEL-IR module acts as a "transparent" data translator i.e.: there is no built-in communications protocol to adhere to. The deviceworks by transmitting anIR pulse for "Low" bits, and not transmitting anything for"High" bits.Since the first bit ofthe serialbyte (the start bit) isalways "Low", this marks the start of thebyte. Subsequent bits are synchronized from there. Take care to set the Polarity pin (pin 1) correctly. For more detailed application advice, contact OMEGA.
Connection to EasyLog Data Logging Modules
Connect as shown below to give your OM-EL-1 InfraRed communication capability. The flying leads should be soldered into the two PCB holes on the OM-EL-1 module,at the lefthand end of the10-way pin header. A1K resistor mustbe fitted asshown if aserial communication cableis used inaddition to the InfraRed link, otherwiseit canbeomitted.
