How LED Technology Works LED vs Laser Technology
The light source:
• Conventional laser printers use a laser beam, which is m oved across the image dr um by a
series of lenses and s pinning mirr ors.
• Okidata's LED techno logy uses a fixed arr ay of light emitting d iodes mounted on a f lat strip that
doesn't move.
Advantages of LED technology
Advantage Due to
Dramatic reduction in the size and weight of
the printer.
Elimination of m oving parts of the
light source
Less wear on the m echanism. Fewer moving parts
Greater consistenc y in dot placement. Fixed LED array
Crisp type resolut ion Elimination of edg e distortion
inherent in moving optic s
Higher reliabilit y Significantl y fewer parts

The Electrophotographic Process
The electrophotograp hic technology us ed in OKI digital LED pr inters and plain pa per facsimile
machines is alm ost identical to that em ployed in most toner -based copying m achines.
• Charging: The first step is depos iting a uniform electrical charge ov er the image drum.
• Exposure: Next, the drum is exposed to light to create a laten t image on its surfac e. The light
source is the LED arra y, which uses 2,560 light emitting diodes at 300 to the inch to produce
its images. The lat ent image retains m uch of the charge appli ed to the drum's s urface during
charging. The segm ents of the photoreceptor drum that correspond to t he non-image areas
have a reduced electr ical change.
• Developing: In the developm ent cycle, charged toner is attracted to the lat ent image by static
electricity, m aking the image visible.
• Transfer: The paper is brought into contac t with the photorecep tor drum, transferring the toner
image to the paper. T he transfer process ap plies a charge through t he paper so the toner
particles adhere to th e paper rather than to th e drum.
• Fusing: heat and pressure fuses the toner to the paper to pr oduce the final prod uct.
Okidata's proprie tary advanced LED te chnology, with fe wer moving parts , assures built-in q uality
and reliability. O kidata backs ever y LED technology unit with a 5-year printhe ad limited warrant y.

Paper and Media Paper is the mos t important factor aff ecting print qualit y. If you are not getting the printing results
you would like, chec k “Print Quality Prob lems” to determine if your printer needs c leaning,
replacement of supp lies, or repair. Then t ake a closer look at the paper you are us ing.

Selecting Paper • For best results, choose paper made for las er printers or copiers.
• Page printers and las er printers require sm ooth, moisture-contr olled paper of the pr oper basis
weight
click on the top ics below for detai ls.
• The wrong paper can r educe print qualit y and may cause dam age with extended use.
• Always try before you buy. Ask for samples before you bu y in bulk.
• Improper storage can affect print qualit y. See Storing Paper f or details.
Paper Selection Factors:
Basis Weight
Brightness
Coated Papers
Cutouts and Perforati ons
Letterhead and Prepr inted Forms
Finishes: Smooth vs. Textur ed Paper
Opacity
Paper Content
OKIPAGE 6w
15
Basis Weight Bond Paper
For bond paper, basis weight is the weight of 1 ream (500 sheets) of 17" x 22" paper .
• Automatic feed: use 16-lb. to 24-lb. bond do not use automatic feed for bond paper
over 24-lb.
• Manual feed: use 16-lb. to 32-lb. b ond.
Cover stock
Other types of paper m easure weigh diff erently. For example, 45- lb. cover stock is approximately
equivalent to 32-lb. bond paper.
OKIPAGE 6w
16
Brightness Brightness is:
• The amount of light reflected off of the page
• Measured on a scale of 1 to 100 (copier paper h as a brightness of abo ut 84)
Many catalogs list brightness values f or paper
, but your eye is gener ally the best judge. Br ighter
paper increases co ntrast with the im age: text and graphics
• Look crisper
• Reproduce better
Paper that isn't as brig ht gives a softer e ffect and can be easier t o read for long
document s.
OKIPAGE 6w
17
Coated Papers Coated papers can prod uce exceptional r esults.
Important! Use only coated paper d esigned for laser p rinters or copiers. Coat ed
papers not meant for l aser printers or copie r may blister.
Warning! Some coatings
particularly color ed coatings added sep arately
can
damage your printer with repeated use.
OKIPAGE 6w
18
Cutouts and Perforations Cutouts are pages with some portion rem oved including binder h oles. Avoid printin g on paper
with cutouts: dependin g on their size and location, cutouts can c ause paper size er rors.
A few "Rules of T humb:"
• Cutouts should be no b igger than 0.375" (9 .52 mm) in diameter.
• Do not print within 0.2 " (5.1 mm) of a cutout or p erforation
• Cutouts and perforations should be clean a nd free of burrs.
OKIPAGE 6w
19
Letterhead and Preprinted Forms Important! Ink used on letterheads an d preprinted forms mu st withstand temperatures
up to 392°F (200°C) for 0.1 second!
• When you order letter head or preprinted f orms, be sure to tell your d ealer that the paper wil l be
used in an LED page pri nter.
• Some inks melt dur ing the fusing proces s this can damage your printer.
OKIPAGE 6w
20
Finishes: Smooth vs. Textured Pa per • In general, the sm oother the paper, the mor e precise and durable the print.
• An uneven surface m akes it harder to plac e and fuse the toner dots to the page.
• The ream label usu ally tells you if the product is textured. Look for words like:
→
→ →
→ Laid
→
→ →
→ Wov e
→
→ →
→ Linen finish.
• Many textured papers will work well in your pr inter. Results can var y: try before you bu y in
quantity.
• For better perform ance, look for textured pap ers with a laser f inish .
• Embossed paper: to a void problems, do not print near the
embossed areas of the p age.
OKIPAGE 6w
21
Opacity • Determines how muc h print shows through f rom one side of the paper to the other.
• Is more important f or multi-page docum ents.
Opaque paper generally lets ver y little light pass through it. Your eye is general ly the best judge.
OKIPAGE 6w
22
Paper Content Ideally, paper shou ld be made from 100% wood pulp. However, m ost papers have som e cotton
or rag content.
Note: Paper with high cotto n content, unless desi gned for laser print ers, generally does not
print well because the s urface is too rough.
OKIPAGE 6w
23
Storing Paper Do store paper:
• In a dry place.
• Lying fl at ( otherwise it may develop a curl and cause pap er jams).
• Away from sunlight (s unlight may discolor your paper).
• Away from mois ture (moisture can cause pr inting problem s, such as blurring and areas
that do not print).
• Away from exces sive temperatures and ra pid temperature chang es.
Some "don'ts":
• Don't open the paper pac kage until you are re ady to use it.
• Don't store your paper o n the floor or next to an ou tside wall.
OKIPAGE 6w
24
Envelopes • Use the front feeder to f eed envelopes m anually, one at a tim e.
• Use rear output.
• Maximum weight = 28 lbs. (105 g/m2)
The printer accepts these envelope si zes:
• COM-9 (3.875" X 8.875 ")
• COM-10 (4 1/8" X 9 1/2 ")
• Monarch (3 7/8" X 7 1/2 ")
• DL (110 mm X 220 mm )
• C5 (162 mm X 229 mm )
Envelope "Do's"
• Do use envelopes wit h a smooth, even surf ace. See Selecting P aper .
• Do use envelopes wit h seams down the sides and a squared-off f lap that does not extend
over the print area :
• Do use envelopes no heavier than 28 lb.
Envelope "Don'ts"
• Don't use envelopes with self-sealing f laps.
• Don't use envelopes with a v-flap:
• Don't use envelopes with windows or metal c lasps.
OKIPAGE 6w
25
Printing Envelopes
1. Adjust the paper g uides.
2. Insert the enve lope — flap down and to the left — until t he printer grips it.
3. Set envelope size and lan dscape orientation in your soft ware.
4. Enter the addres s, then print through your software.
OKIPAGE 6w
26
Transparencies and Adhesi ve Labels Use the front feeder to f eed transparencies an d label sheets manual ly, one at a time.
Choosing Transparencies and Adhesive Labels
Use transparencies a nd labels that are spec ifically made f or laser printers or photocopiers.
Important! Transparencies and ad hesive labels and thei r carriers must be able to
withstand a temperature of 392ºF (200ºC) for 0.1 second.
Caution! Labels should cover the entire c arrier sheet
carrier and adhesiv e must not
be exposed to any p art of the printer.
