::: Total Control Quickstart Guide :::

This Quickstart Guide explains how to quickly setup and begin using the Numark Total Control MIDI Controller. Please take a few minutes to go through this Quickstart and get familiar with the setup procedure and basic controls.

We have designed Total Control as an essential tool for software-based DJs. Total Control is a MIDI-compliant device and can be used with any software which supports the MIDI protocol. We have included the CUE LE and Traktor 3 LE software packages for you to begin DJing immediately. We highly recommend reading the CUE LE and Traktor 3 LE Reference Manuals, included on the installation discs, in order to take full advantage of Total Control’s features. Happy DJing!

Total Control is a plug-and-play device, which means that the first time you connect the controller to your computer all necessary drivers will be installed automatically.

Please use the included USB cable to connect the Total Control controller to an available USB port on your PC.

You will see a few pop-up windows, similar to the one on the right, displayed in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Please allow Total Control to automatically initialize all the necessary drivers. When the installation is complete, you will see “Your new hardware is installed and ready to use” message, shown on the right. The installation is now complete and the controller is ready to use.

Under Mac OS, Total Control is a plug-and-play device and will be ready to use as soon as it is connected.

Please use the included USB cable to connect the Total Control controller to an available USB port on your Mac.

A NOTE ABOUT MIDI CONTROL :::::

The Total Control was designed as a MIDI-compliant device, allowing you to control any computer application which supports the MIDI protocol. This means that you can not only use the Total Control with the included software, but can also use the controller with a variety of other music and video applications as well. In order to use the Total Control with your favorite software, you will have to enable the Total Control as a MIDI input device in your software’s preferences. Please note that depending on your software, the Total Control ma

Please note: If you have installed Logitech Quickcam drivers, your computer will not be able to properly recognize many MIDI devices, including the Total Control. To use the controller, you will need to uninstall the Logitech Quickcam driver. The controller will then be able to function properly. To uninstall the driver, you need to right-click on My Computer, then Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager. This allows you to see all the devices installed on your machine. Find the Logitech Quickcam device, right-click it and select “Uninstall”. This will uninstall the device and its driver.

Please note: If you are using the Total Control with a USB hub, please use a 6V 1A power adapter (optional) to power the Total Control externally. This will ensure proper operation.

CONTROLLER SETUP - PC

IMPORTANT :::::

If using a desktop PC, you may need to connect the Total Control controller to one of the rear USB ports in order for the controller to function properly. Often, the USB ports located on the front of the computer do not provide enough bus power for some devices to function correctly. If you experience problems when

CONTROLLER SETUP - MAC

HOOKUP SCENARIO 1 – WITHOUT MULTICHANNEL AUDIO INTERFACE

If you do not own an audio interface with multiple audio outputs, please study the connection diagram on the right.

 Connect the Total Control to your computer with

the included USB cable.

 Connect your computer’s audio output to a

powered speaker system, amplifier or headphones.

Hint: Most built-in computer soundcards feature a 1/8” stereo plug. Depending on your speaker system, you may need to purchase the appropriate cable connectors.

HOOKUP SCENARIO 2 – WITH MULTICHANNEL AUDIO INTERFACE

In this scenario, you are using an external audio I/O interface with multiple audio outputs, such as the Numark DJ|IO, via USB or FireWire. Multiple output audio interfaces enable you to send your master mix and your cue mix on separate audio outputs, allowing you to take full advantage of cueing while you play.

If you own a multiple output audio interface, please study the setup diagram on the right.

 Connect the Total Control to your computer with

the included USB cable.

 Connect your computer to your audio interface

with the proper cable. (Please see your audio interface documentation for correct connection).

 Connect one pair of outputs on your audio

interface to a powered speaker system or amplifier.

 Connect your headphones to an alternate audio

output on your audio interface.

Note: You will have to setup your software and hardware so your mix output is being sent to one stereo output, while the cue mix is being routed to another. Please consult the software and hardware documentation for more information on routing your audio outputs. For information and an example on how to route audio outputs in CUE LE and Traktor LE, please read the Routing Audio Outputs sections on the next page.

ROUTING AUDIO OUTPUTS IN CUE LE

When using a multi-channel audio interface with CUE LE, you will need to make sure that the Master Mix and the Headphones Mix are being routed to two different sets of stereo outputs.

Click on the Config button in the top right corner of the screen to access CUE LE’s configuration settings. You will see the window shown on the right.

1. Select your audio interface’s driver type from the pull-down menu.

2. Then, select your audio interface from the driver pull-down menu. (Numark DJ|IO shown in illustration)

3. Select Headphones from the Outputs pulldown menu.

4. Lastly, choose which outputs you would like to use for your Master and Headphones channels from the pull-down menu on the bottom.

5. Click OK to exit the configuration settings.

ROUTING AUDIO OUTPUTS IN TRAKTOR 3 LE

When using a multi-channel audio interface with Traktor 3 LE, you will need to make sure that the Master Mix and the Monitor Mix are being routed to two different sets of stereo outputs.

1. First, you need to select your multi-channel audio interface to be used with Traktor 3 LE.

2. Click on Preferences, choose Audio Setup and click on the Soundcard tab.

3. Next, select your multi-channel audio interface in the Audio Device pull-down menu on the right. (Numark DJ|IO shown in illustration).

4. Then click on the Output Routing tab.

5. You can now set the audio outputs for you Master and Monitor Mix channels. Please select one pair of outputs for your Master Mix, and a different pair of outputs (headphones channel) for your Monitor Mix. You will now be able to use the Monitor channel to cue and monitor in your headphones while you play.

CUE LE CONTROLLER OVERLAY

With Total Control, we have included a special edition of CUE LE so you can immediately begin DJing. Total Control’s controls are automatically mapped to the most important functions in CUE LE and we have provided a convenient overlay for visual reference.

To install the CUE LE overlay, if not already installed on the unit:

1. Remove the fader caps by gently lifting them up from their base.

2. Gently pull out the existing overlay by lifting it from the top left corner. Put the existing overlay away for safekeeping.

3. Once the existing overlay has been removed, position the CUE LE overlay onto the Total Control.

4. Gently replace the fader caps.

Once you have installed the CUE LE software and overlay, please connect your controller and run CUE LE.

Please note: The Total Control must be connected to your computer before starting the software. Otherwise, the software will not start.

Please refer to the controller mappings on the next page of this manual for additional information on how Total Control controls are mapped to CUE LE.

CUE LE CONTROLLER MAPPING

1. TRACK – You can use this knob to scroll through the different folders and tracks in Cue’s browser. Press down on the knob to expand subfolders. When browsing music inside a folder, you can always return to browsing the folder structure by pressing the TRACK knob again.

2. LOAD – Each virtual deck features a LOAD button.

The LOAD button has two functions:

 Selecting a track and pressing the LOAD button

will load the track to the corresponding deck.

 While using the TRACK knob to browse your

music in the folder structure, you can press either LOAD button to enter the folder and browse the music inside.

3. PLAY / STUTTER – Pressing PLAY starts playback on the corresponding deck. If you press PLAY while the song is already playing, it will restart the music from the last position you pressed PLAY from, creating a “stutter” effect.

4. PAUSE – Pressing PAUSE once will return and pause playback at to the last set cue point. Pressing PAUSE again will return to the beginning of the track.

5. CUE - Returns and pauses the music at the default Cue Point. To set a Cue Point, pause the song, seek to the desired position, and then press CUE. Once you’re on the Cue Point, pressing and holding down CUE allows for temporary play of this point. The track will play for as long as the button is held down and will return to the cue point once it has been released.

6. VOLUME - Each virtual deck features a VOLUME fader which can be used to make volume adjustments to the music playing on the corresponding deck.

7. PITCH - Each virtual deck features a PITCH SLIDER, which can be used to change the pitch or tempo of the music playing on the corresponding deck.

8. SYNC - When you press SYNC, Cue will sync the tempo of the deck to the opposite deck’s tempo. If you press SYNC while the song is paused, only the pitch will be adjusted. If you press SYNC while the song is playing, the beats will be smoothly aligned too.

9. JOG WHEEL - Each virtual deck features a JOG WHEEL, which can be used for scratching, pitch bending and changing playback and cue position on the corresponding deck. The functionality of the jog wheel is determined by the SCRATCH button.

10. SCRATCH – If the SCRATCH button is engaged, both jog wheels can be used for scratching the music on the decks, much like a conventional DJ scratches a record. If the SCRATCH button is disengaged and the decks are playing, both jog wheels will act as a pitch bend, temporarily speeding up or slowing down the music. If the SCRATCH button is engaged but the decks are not playing, rotating the jog wheels will quickly scan through the music loaded on the decks.

11. LOOP IN / OUT - A loop is any area of a track that you choose to repeat seamlessly. Press LOOP IN at the point where you wish the loop to start. Press LOOP OUT when you reach the desired point to mark the end point of the loop and the audio between the two points will begin to loop continuously. To release the loop and continue play of the track press LOOP OUT again and the audio will continue from the end point of the loop. If you wish to set a new loop, just press LOOP IN again while the loop is disengaged, and then press LOOP OUT to begin the new loop.

12. LOOP << / >> - Adjusts the loop length by half length or double length increments. Press << to cut the loop length in half. Press >> to double the loop length.

13. GAIN - Each virtual deck features a GAIN knob which can be used to make adjustments to the gain level on the corresponding deck

14. EQ - Each deck features an EQ which can be used to make adjustments to the levels of the Treble, Mid, and Bass frequencies of the music. By pressing down, each EQ knob can also function as a Kill switch, removing that frequency band from the music. The LED next to the knob will light to let you know that the Kill feature has been engaged. To disengage the Kill feature, press on the knob again.

15. CROSSFADER - You can use the CROSSFADER

to fade between the two tracks playing on the virtual decks. If the crossfader is in the left-most position, you will only hear the audio from deck A. If the crossfader is in the middle position, you will be able to hear both the audio from deck A and the audio from deck B. If the crossfader is in the rightmost position, you will only be able to hear the audio from deck B.

16. MASTER - The MASTER knob functions as Master

Level control, allowing you to change the overall volume of the mix.

17. PH VOL - This knob adjusts the headphone mix

level. Please note that, unless you are using a multiple output audio interface, the Heaphone and Master channels will be the same.

18. PH MIX - This knob adjusts the balance between

the Cue and Master channels in the headphones. Please note that, unless you are using a multiple output audio interface, the Heapnohes and Master channels will be the same.

19. PFL – Press the PFL button to send the music

playing on the deck to the Headphone channel for auditioning. Please note that if you are not using a multiple output audio interface, the Headphone channel will be the same as the Master channel.

20. KEYLOCK – The KEYLOCK button engages the

Key Lock feature in CUE LE. When Key Lock is engaged, the pitch of the music playing on the deck will be locked to the current value. You can then adjust the tempo of the music, independent of the pitch.

To install the Traktor 3 LE overlay, if not already installed on the unit:

1. Remove the fader caps by gently lifting them up from their base.

2. Gently pull out the existing overlay by lifting it from the top left corner. Put the existing overlay away for safekeeping.

3. Once the existing overlay has been removed, position the Traktor 3 LE overlay onto the Total Control.

4. Gently replace the fader caps.

Once you have installed the Traktor 3 LE software and overlay, run Traktor 3 LE. Please refer to the controller mappings on the next page of this manual for additional information on how Total Control controls are mapped to Traktor 3 LE.

TRAKTOR 3 LE CONTROLLER MAPPING

Please note: This overlay is intended to function with both Traktor 3 LE and Traktor 3. You will notice that a few controls have been left unlabeled. When using Traktor 3, you can assign these controls to various different functions in the software. If you are using the Traktor 3 LE version included with the Total Control, you will notice that these controls have been already mapped to certain functions in the software. Please see below for explanation of these controller mappings.

1. TRACK - You can use the TRACK knob to scroll through the music on your computer. Press down on the TRACK knob to preview the selected track. Use the TRACK knob while pressing and holding down the PAGE button to browse and navigate through your different drives, folders and playlists. Once you release the PAGE button, you can then use the TRACK knob to browse the contents of the selected folder.

2. PAGE - Holding down the PAGE button while using certain controls on the Total Control allows for an additional layer of functionality.

3. LOAD TRACK - Each virtual deck features a LOAD

TRACK button. Selecting a track and pressing the LOAD TRACK button will load the track to the corresponding deck. You can "focus" on one of the decks by holding down the PAGE button and pressing the corresponding deck's LOAD TRACK button. Certain controls on the Total Control will only address the deck which is currently "in focus".

4. PLAY - Press the PLAY button to begin playing the

track.

5. CUE - The CUE button will return and pause the track at the last set cue point. For temporary play of the cue point, you can hold down the CUE button. The track will play for as long as the button is held down and will return to the cue point once it has been released.

6. SET CUE - You can use this button to set a new cue point.

7. CUE PLAY - You can hold down the CUE PLAY button to go back and pause at the last set cue point. When you release the CUE PLAY button, the track will begin playing.

8. VOLUME - Each virtual deck features a VOLUME fader which can be used to make volume adjustments to the music playing on the corresponding deck.

9. PITCH - Each virtual deck features a PITCH SLIDER, which can be used to change the pitch or tempo of the music playing on the corresponding deck.

10. PITCH BEND -/+ - You can use these two pitch bend buttons to temporarily adjust the pitch and tempo of the music playing on the corresponding deck. Pitch bend is typically used to make small adjustments when mixing two tracks so their beats occur synchronously.

11. KEY - The KEY button engages the Key Lock feature in Traktor LE. When Key Lock is engaged, the pitch of the music playing on the deck will be locked to the current value. You can then adjust the tempo of the music, independent of the pitch.

12. SYNC - Press this button to synchronize the music playing on the deck to the music playing on the other virtual deck.

13. JOG WHEEL - Each virtual deck features a JOG WHEEL, which can be used to change playback and cue position on the corresponding deck.

14. LOOP - Press this button to create a seamless one bar loop. When you press the LOOP button, the track will begin looping until you release the loop by pressing the LOOP button again.

15. GAIN - Each virtual deck features a GAIN knob which can be used to make adjustments to the gain level on the corresponding deck.

16. EQ - Each deck features an EQ which can be used to make adjustments to the levels of the Treble, Mid, and Bass frequencies of the music. By pressing down, each EQ knob can also function as a Kill switch, removing that frequency band from the music. The LED next to the knob will light to let you know that the Kill feature has been engaged. To disengage the Kill feature, press on the knob again.

17. CUE SOURCE - Press the CUE SOURCE button to send the music playing on the deck to the Monitor channel. Please note that if you are not using a multiple output audio interface, the Monitor (headphone) channel will be the same as the Master channel. When browsing the folder structure on the left of the screen, while holding down the PAGE button, you can use the CUE SOURCE buttons to expand and collapse the selected folder. The left CUE SOURCE button will collapse the selected folder, while the right CUE SOURCE button will expand the selected folder.

18. CROSSFADER - You can use the CROSSFADER to fade between the two tracks playing on the virtual decks. If the crossfader is in the left-most position, you will only hear the audio from deck A. If the crossfader is in the middle position, you will be able to hear both the audio from deck A and the audio from deck B. If the crossfader is in the right-most position, you will only be able to hear the audio from deck B.

19. MASTER - The MASTER knob functions as Master Level control, allowing you to change the overall volume of the mix.

20. PH VOL - This knob adjusts the headphone mix level. Please note that, unless you are using a multiple output audio interface, the Monitor and Master channels will be the same.

PH MIX - This knob adjusts the balance between

21. the Monitor and Master channels in the headphones. Please note that, unless you are using a multiple output audio interface, the Monitor and Master Mix channels will be the same.

UNLABELED CONTROLS – LEFT SIDE

22. KNOB 1 - This knob adjusts how much of the selected effect will be mixed into the Master Mix. In other words, if the knob is all the way down, you will hear only the original sound. Conversely, if the knob is all the way up, you will hear only the effected sound.

23. BUTTON 1 - Press this button to select between the different effects to be applied to the Master Mix.

24. KNOB 2 - This knob functions as a left/right balance control on deck A.

25. BUTTON 2 - Press and hold this button for Scratch Mode. While Scratch Mode is activated, you can use the jog wheel to scratch the audio playing on deck A.

26. KNOB 3 - This knob adjusts the first parameter of the selected effect. Please note that this parameter will be different, depending on which effect you have selected.

27. BUTTON 3 - Press this button to turn the master effect on and off.

28. KNOB 4 - This knob adjusts the second parameter of the selected effect, if available. Please note that this parameter may be different or unavailable, depending on which effect you have selected.

29. BUTTON 4 - This button can be used to adjust a third parameter of the selected effect, if available. For example, if you have selected the Delay effect, you can use this button to tap out the BPM of the Delay effect.

UNLABELED CONTROLS – RIGHT SIDE

30. KNOB 1 - This knob functions as a left/right balance control on deck A.

31. BUTTON 1 - Press and hold this button for Scratch Mode. While Scratch Mode is activated, you can use the jog wheel to scratch the audio playing on deck A.

32. KNOB 2 - This knob allows you to seek through the track preview.

33. BUTTON 2 - Press this button to start and pause the track preview.

34. KNOB 3 - This button allows you to seek through the music loaded on the deck which is currently "in focus". You can focus on a deck by holding down the PAGE button and pressing the corresponding deck's LOAD TRACK button.

35. BUTTON 3 - This button functions a s a RELOOP BUTTON. You can press this button to enter the last set loop. If no loop has been previously set, pressing RELOOP will begin looping the first bar of the track.

36. KNOB 4 - This button allows you to make fine pitch adjustments to the music on the deck which is currently "in focus". You can focus on a deck by holding down the PAGE button and pressing the corresponding deck's LOAD TRACK button.

37. BUTTON 4 - This button allows you to synchronize the downbeats of the music playing on the deck currently "in focus" to the downbeats of the other deck. You can focus on a deck by holding down the PAGE button and pressing the corresponding deck's LOAD TRACK button.

ESCENARIO DE CONEXIÓN 1 –SIN INTERFAZ DE AUDIO MULTICANAL

SI no posee una interfaz de audio con varias salidas de audio, estudie el diagrama de conexión de la derecha.

 Conecte Total Control a su computadora con el

cable USB incluido.

 Conecte la salida de audio de su computadora a

un sistema de altavoces alimentados, amplificador o auriculares.

Indicación: La mayoría de las tarjetas de sonido incorporadas a las computadoras tienen un enchufe estéreo de 1/8”. Según sea su sistema de altavoces, puede ser necesario adquirir los

conectores de cables apropiados.

ESCENARIO DE CONEXIÓN 2 –CON INTERFAZ DE AUDIO MULTICANAL

En este escenario, está usando una interfaz de E/S de audio externa con varias salidas de audio, tal como DJ|IO de Numark, a través de una conexión USB o FireWire. Las interfaces de audio con varias salidas le permiten enviar su mezcla maestra y su mezcla de cue por salidas separadas, aprovechando así al máximo las ventajas de la función cue mientras reproduce la música.

Si posee una interfaz de audio con varias salidas, estudie el diagrama de instalación de la derecha.

 Conecte Total Control a su computadora con el

cable USB incluido.

 Conecte su computadora a su interfaz de audio

con el cable apropiado. (Consulte la

documentación de su interfaz de audio para

conocer la conexión correcta).

 Conecte un par de salidas de su interfaz de audio

a un sistema de altavoces alimentados o amplificador.

 Conecte sus auriculares a una salida de audio alternativa de su interfaz.

Nota: Debe configurar su software y hardware de modo que su salida de mezcla se envíe a una salida estéreo mientras la mezcla de cue se encamina a otra.
