Introduction1-
Network Wide Backup & Restore
The Network Wide Backup & Restore Release 1.0 optional application enables
the INM user to easily restore NE, Express NPC, or OPC/MOA lost data. The
backup feature provides the ability to centralize and automate the backup of
NE database and OPC configuration data to an INM server . The restore feature
provides the ability to restore the backed up data when required.
Note: The Backup & Restore feature is not compatible with previous
OPC/MOA releases.
1
With this application, an INM user can create network wide backups, which
are placed on centralized storage (such as a hard drive). In the event of an OPC
or NPC hardware failure or a provisioning error, the backup can be used to
restore the controller and recover.
The backup is performed from the OPC or NPC to the INM controller
workstation. Similarly, the restore operation restores from the INM controller
to the OPC.
The Backup & Restore application
•contains a Backup Manager and a Restoration Manager
•will not create a processing load that can se verly impact other processes on
the controller or INM platforms
•gives a snapshot of the data on the controller at the time of the backup
•provides two timestamps that are generated by the
— process that creates the backup file; the time is based on the controller’ s
time
— INM workstation requesting the backup; the time indicates when
backup has occurred at the INM workstation
•is compatible with the following SONET NE controllers:
7
10
— OPC (OC-48 Release 15, and OC-192 Release 6)
Network Wide Backup & Restore User Guide 450-3101-031 Rel 1.0 Standard June 1999
1-2 Introduction
— MOA (OC-3/12 Express Release 5 for MX and HX; CX Release 4)
•is compatible with the following SDH NE controllers:
— EC-1 (TN-1P Release 2; TN-1C Releases 1, 2, 3; TN-1x Releases 7, 8;
The Network Wide Backup & Restore feature allows operators to create
backups without having to travel to remote sites.
Only users with nocadm priviledges can perform backup and restore.
Only one instance of the EDIT window can be active at one time; other
instances of the EDIT window can be in VIEW mode only.
Backup & Restore
Database backup is performed for each controller to record and save the
contents of the database in a separate directory other than that of the controller.
TN-4xE Releases 1, 2, 2.02, 3)
Database restore is performed if a database of a controller becomes corrupted,
to replace the corrupted database with a known good backup database to
enable the controller to resume correct operation.
Backups are typically created at either of two times:
•recurring —daily, weekly, or other specified period
•one time — after significant changes have been made to the database or to
the controller environment
The backup directory can include up to nine separate backups.
A restore operation replaces the current contents of a controller database with
the contents of the selected backup file.
The primary reasons for restoring a database are
•the current database has been corrupted
•a recent update has introduced problems and a previous version must be
reactivated
•new hardware has been installed that requires a database
Multiple different backups are maintained for the following reasons:
•if one backup has been corrupted, another backup can be selected instead
•each backup is related to a specific time, configuration, and set of
parameters
Integrated Network Management 450-3101-031 Rel 1.0 Standard June 1999
•a backup may contain changes that corrupt controller operation
You cannot overwrite a locked backup.
Suspending and unsuspending automated backups
Suspend automated database backup during any INM system maintenance
activities, such as:
•rebooting an INM workstation
•reinstalling INM Backup & Restore software
•changing workstation date/time settings
At the completion of these maintenance activities, unsuspend the automated
backup to allow automated backups to resume.
Collection information
The INM B&R software collects and backs up the database from each
controller on request or at scheduled intervals. This backup of the database is
stored on the INM server to be used if a database has to be restored to the
controller.
Introduction 1-3
1
OPC
NPC
The database collected from the OPC is the current contents of the OPC at the
time of collection.
Before the network processor controller (NPC) database is backed up to the
INM, the NPC collects an update from each of its shelf processors (SP).

2-1
Installation of Network Wide Backup &
Restore2-
This section describes the procedure to install the INM Network Wide Backup
& Restore software onto the workstation that will manage the network.
The INM Network Wide Backup & Restore provides an automated process to
back up system databases.
In the event of database failure, database corruption, or hardware replacement,
the most recent database can be restored to the affected controller from the
INM backup.
This section also describes the procedure to uninstall the INM Network Wide
Backup & Restore software and the procedure to save the configuration data.
2
Chapter task list
Refer to the following procedures to install or uninstall the Network Wide
Backup & Restore feature.

Procedure 2-1
Installing the Network Wide Backup & Restore
optional application
Use this procedure to install the Network Wide Backup & Restore software.
Requirements
Read this requirements section and the entire procedure through once before
starting the procedure.
Before you start, you must
•unmount the CD-ROM drive and remove any CD-ROM from the drive
•have a copy of the Network Wide Backup & Restore CD-ROM
•install the INM software prior to the Backup & Restore software
Action
StepAction
1Insert the Backup & Restore CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.
2Log in to the workstation as the root user. Enter the root user ID and password
in the login dialog.
3Open a console window and change to the /tmp directory. Enter
cd /tmp ↵
4Create a new directory to store the CD-ROM installation files. Enter
mkdir /cdrom ↵
5Mount the CD-ROM in the directory created. Enter
mount /dev/dsk/<device name> /cdrom ↵
where
device name is the name of the CD-ROM drive. For example c1t2d0.
6Create a new user dir ectory to store the CD-ROM installation files. Enter
mkdir /tmp/br_install ↵
7Change to the new directory. Enter
cd /tmp/br_install ↵
8Save and restore the archive of the files to a storage location. Enter
tar xf /cdrom/install.tar ↵
9Run the installation script. Enter
↵
./br_install
