Series 40 Quick Start Guide
The Nokia Series 40 phones have an in-built Push To Talk (PTT) client that your PTT service utilises.
This enables you to hold one-to-one and one-to-many conversations at a push of a button.
The screens in this guide are the standard Nokia Series 40 screens, your screens may vary slightly depending on your handset model.
Setting up Push to Talk for
the first time
1. Firstly, ensure that your handset has been fully charged and your SIM
has been activated with your PTT service and is inserted.
2. To set up PTT on your device you will receive a text message, follow the
below instructions:
Press ‘Show’
Press ‘Save’
Your phone will now return to the standby screen. Scroll through your main ‘Menu’, a ‘Push to Talk’ screen will appear.
This is now configured to your PTT service.

Setting up User Groups
This is done by accepting text invitations for the required user groups that are sent to you from the provisioning system.

You need to state whether this is to be your main group or a secondary group. Select the option from below screen that meets your requirements for this group:
Scroll to required option and press ‘Select’
Default (or Active) = You will automatically broadcast to this group when
you press the PTT button and all calls will be broadcast to you.
Listened = You will ‘Listen’ into calls to this channel, but you
will need to manually select it to talk to this group.
Inactive = You will not hear any conversations from this group.
Press ‘Save’

Contact Management
Adding a new contact
You can add new personal contacts by adding them manually or selecting them from a group.
1. Adding a new contact manually
Scroll to ‘contact list’ on the Push to Talk menu.
Now you can add your contact manually to your Push to Talk list by following the below:
Select ‘Contact List’
Select contact and press ‘Options’
Press ‘Add Contact’
Select ‘Enter Manually’
Enter Push to Talk address*
Select ‘Ok’
Note: If you have no existing contacts you will be asked to add a new contact.

You will now receive confirmation of it being added and sent back to your contacts list with the new contact added.
*This is normally your mobile phone number.

Go to the ‘Group List’ option on the Push to Talk menu screen.

Making a Call
To start a Push to Talk call you simply talk whilst you hold down the Push to Talk button on you handset. The recipient(s) can then respond once you have cleared the channel by releasing the PTT button.
You will broadcast to your ‘default’ or ‘Active’ group by just pressing the PTT button from the standby screen. To broadcast to a particular contact or group you will need to go into the PTT menu.
1. One to One Call
Go to your ‘Contacts list’ or a ‘Group list’, scroll to the contact you wish to speak to and hold down Push to Talk button on the side of the phone to start a conversation.
2. Broadcasting to an ad-hoc group
From your ‘contacts list’ or ‘Group Lists’ scroll to individual contacts and ‘Mark’ them, once you have marked the contacts you wish to speak to then press the PTT button. Recipients of that call will now respond to all users.
3. Broadcasting to a pre-set group
You can broadcast to a group by manually selecting it through the ‘Group List’ option in the PTT menu. Simply highlight the group you wish to broadcast to and press the Push To Talk button on the side of the phone.

Requesting a Callback
If you need to get hold of somebody but you do not want to broadcast a message directly to them then you can request a ‘callback’. This is useful when you are not sure of the situation they are in.
1. Select the contact you wish to reach from your ‘Contact List’ screen.
2. Press ‘Options’ and select ‘Send Callback’.
3. You will receive confirmation when this message is sent.
4. You will then be returned to the contacts screen and the recipient will
see a message asking them to contact you. They just need to press their PTT button and this will instigate a direct one-to-one PTT call to you.
