Read these simple guidelines. Breaking the rules may be dangerous or illegal. Further detailed information is given in this manual.
Do not switch on the phone when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
ROAD SAFETY COMES FIRST
Do not use a hand-held phone while driving.
INTERFERENCE
All wireless phones may get interference, which could affect performance.
SWITCH OFF IN HOSPITALS
Follow any regulations or rules. Switch the phone off near medical equipment.
SWITCH OFF IN AIRCRAFT
Wireless devices can cause interference in aircraft.
SWITCH OFF WHEN REFUELLING
Do not use the phone at a refuelling point. Do not use near fuel or chemicals.
SWITCH OFF NEAR BLASTING
Do not use the phone where blasting is in progress. Observe restrictions, and follow any regulations or rules.
USE SENSIBLY
Use only in the normal position. Do not touch the antenna unnecessarily.
QUALIFIED SERVICE
Only qualified personnel may install or repair phone equipment.
ACCESSORIES AND BATTERIES
Use only approved accessories and batteries. Do not connect incompatible products.
WATER-RESISTANCE
Your phone is not water­resistant. Keep it dry.

Network Services
The wireless phone described in this guide is approved for use on the EGSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks.
Dualband is a network dependant feature. Check with your local service provider if you can subscribe to and use this feature.
A number of features included in this guide are called Network Services. These are special services that you arrange through your wireless service provider. Before you can take advantage of any of these Network Services, you must subscribe to them through your service provider and obtain instructions for their use from your service provider.

General information

The stickers contain important information for service and customer support purposes. Keep these stickers in a safe and secure place.

Access codes
The following access codes allow you to avoid unauthorised use of your phone and SIM card.
Security code: Protects your
phone against unauthorised use. This code is supplied with the phone. The preset code is 12345.
Change the code and set the phone to request it using the
Change access codes and Phone security functions of the Security
settings menu (see page 23). Keep the new code in a safe and secure place, separate from the phone.
PIN code: This code, supplied
with the SIM card, protects the card against unauthorised use. If the PIN code request function of the Security settings menu (see page 23) is activated, the code is requested when the phone is switched on.
If you enter an incorrect PIN code three times in succession, the SIM card is blocked. Key in the PUK code and press (OK). Key in a new PIN code and press
(OK). Key in the new code
again and press (OK).
PIN2 code: This code is supplied
with some SIM cards and is required to access some functions, such as charging unit counters. If you enter an incorrect PIN2 code three times in succession, you are asked for the PUK2 code.
PUK and PUK2 code: These
codes may be supplied with the SIM card. If this is not the case, contact your local service provider.

Getting started
Keys
The basic functions of the phone keys are described below. More information is given throughout this users guide.
Power key
Press and hold this key to switch the phone on or off. In standby mode, press this key briefly to show the list of profiles, which allows you to quickly set the phone tones for different environments. In a menu function, press this key briefly to turn on the lights for 15 seconds.
Scroll keys
standby mode to show the names and phone numbers saved in the phone book. Press in standby mode to show the list of most recently dialled numbers. In the menu functions, press these keys to browse through the menus and settings. During a call, press these keys to adjust the earpiece volume.
Clear/exit key
keying in a name or number, press this key to delete the character to the left. In the menu functions, press this key to return to the previous menu level or press and hold this key to exit the menu. When you receive a call, press this key to reject the call.

Display and standby
Nokia Navi™ key
mode
The indicators described below are shown when the phone is ready for use, with no characters keyed in by the user. The phone is said to be in standby mode.
1. Indicates in which cellular network the phone is being used.
2. Shows the signal strength of the cellular network at your current location.
3. Shows the battery charge level.
4. Shows the current function of the Nokia Navi key ( ).

You have received a text or picture message.
The phone does not ring or beep when you receive a call.
The keypad is locked. The alarm clock is on. The timed profile is in use. All your calls are diverted. Your calls are limited to a
closed user group. The countdown timer is
running. The stopwatch is running.
Inserting a SIM card
Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children.
The SIM card and its contacts can easily be damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting or removing the card.
Before installing the SIM card, always make sure that the phone is switched off and then remove the battery.
1. Press the locking catch (1), slide the cover (2), and lift it off the phone (3).
2. Push the two catches in the opposite directions (4), and remove the battery (5).
3. Slide the SIM card carefully into the SIM card slot (6).
Make sure that the golden connectors on the card are facing downwards and that the bevelled corner is on the left.

4. Align the golden connectors on the battery with the corresponding connectors on the phone, and push the opposite end of the battery until it snaps into place (7).
5. Insert the two catches of the back cover in the corresponding slots in the phone (8), and slide the cover towards the bottom of the phone until it locks into place (9).
Charging the battery
Do not charge the battery when one or both of the phone covers is removed. See also ”Battery statements on page 32.
1. Connect the lead from the charger to the bottom of the phone.
2. Connect the charger to an AC wall outlet. The battery indicator bar starts scrolling on the display.
The phone can be used while
charging if it is switched on.
Charging the battery supplied
with the phone may take up to six hours when using the ACP-7 charger.
If Not charging is displayed,
wait for a while, disconnect the charger, plug it in again and retry. If charging still fails, contact your dealer.
3. When the battery is fully charged, the bar stops scrolling. Disconnect the charger from the AC outlet and the phone.

Changing the covers
Before changing the cover, always switch off the power and disconnect the phone from the charger or any other device. Always store and use the phone with the covers attached.

Use New call to make a new call that is in progress during a call (network service).
Use Answer to answer a new call that is in progress during a call (network service).

Use Swap to switch between the active and held call while you have two calls in progress.
Use End active call or End all calls to end the active call or both the active and held call while you have two calls in progress.
Listening to voice
messages
In standby mode, press and hold
to call your voice mailbox. You can obtain the voice mailbox number from your service provider.
To save the voice mailbox number, see Voice mailbox number (Menu 2-
9) on page 18.
Locking the keypad
You can lock the keypad to avoid accidental keypresses, for example, when the phone is in your handbag.
To turn the lock on or off:
In standby mode, press and then quickly.
You can also set the phone to lock the keypad automatically after a certain time. See Keylock settings (Menu 6-5) on page 25.
When the keypad is locked:
The indicator is shown. To answer a call, press (Answer). During a call, the phone can be operated normally. When you end or reject a call, the keypad will be automatically locked. The HDC-5 headset can be used normally.
When Keyguard is on,

calls may be possible to the emergency number programmed into your phone (e.g. 112 or other official emergency number). Key in the emergency number and press (Call). The number is displayed only after you have keyed in its last digit.
Saving a phone number
in the phone book
In standby mode, press (Menu) (Phone book is displayed) and then
(Select). Scroll to Add name
and press (Select). Key in the desired name (see Writing text on page 8) and press (OK). Key in the area code and phone number, and press (OK).
Quick save:
