Niles Audio IRZ-6+ Owner's Manual

The IRZ6+ is a unique multi-zone IR Main System Unit. In many ways it is as if six IR Repeater Systems are combined. The IRZ6+ controls which of your audio/video components will receive IR commands from a remote sensor/keypad. Via it’s configuration switches you may control a particular component from only one sensor/keypad or you may choose to control a component from any combination of remote sensor/keypads throughout the system.
This enables you to use multiple identical preamps/receivers to create a multiple-zone audio system using identical IR commands without any conflicts between users.
Each preamp/receiver with a switched AC outlet can be equiped with a 12v DC wall adapter. The wall adapter plugs into the appropiate status feedback signal to the sensor/keypad for that zone only. Additionally, IR commands to a common source (e.g. a CD changer) can be routed from any or all of the zones.
The IRZ-6+ is on e of several elements that make up an infrared extender system:
1. IR Sensors receive IR commands from hand-held remote controls and relay the commands to the IR Main System Unit via a 2conductor shielded cable. Generally, sensors are placed so that you can easily and naturally point your remote control directly at them. Niles offers an array of easily concealable sensors: wall-mount, ceiling-mount, surface-mount and table-top. IR sensors are the “eyes” of the system.
2. Keypads memorize IR commands from hand-held remote controls and reissue the commands to the IR Main System Unit via a 2-conductor shielded cable. Generally, keypads are placed so that they are convenient to doorways, telephones etc. Keypads give you a remote control you cannot misplace.
3. The IR Main System Unit pro- vides a connection hub for the IR sensors and the IR flashers and is generally located near the A/V components. The IR Main System Unit’s level controls and LED indicators enable you to configure, calibrate and troubleshoot an IR extender system. The Main System Unit is the “heart” of an IR extender system.
4. IR Expansion Units enable you to expand the number of sensor/keypads a Main System Unit will support.
5. Infrared Flashers transmit the infrared signals from the IR Main System Unit to your A/V components. Niles manufactures flooding flashers (model IRC-1) and miniature “pin-point” flashers (model IRC-2). The miniature “pin-point flasher is the appropriate flasher to use with the IRZ6+ since it incorporates a blocking cover which prevents IR commands from reaching other components.

The IRZ6+ offers a number of improvements over other IR Extender Main System Units:
Universal system—compatible with virtually all brands of A/V equipment and remote controls (the only exceptions are those brands using carrier frequencies higher than 64kHz).
Built-in “Status” generator for each of the six zones broadcasts the amplifier “on/off” power status over existing IR wiring to provide power status display when used with other Niles products like the IntelliPad that feature status display LED’s.
• Allows the creation of as many as 6 independent zones, and among those zones supports as many as
16 local and/or central sources (in four configurations). A simple addition (the XRP6+ IR Expansion Unit) provides IR control for zones containing multiple rooms.
• Accommodates 6 IR sensors and keypads. Provides for 10 IR flasher outputs. Six flasher outputs are DEDICATED; the remaining 4 are ASSIGNABLE via DIP switches to any or all of the 6 sensors. A screwpot adjustment labeled ADJUST permits varying the level of each flasher output. This prevents components from being overloaded by too much IR.
• IR DATA OUT connector with corresponding assignable DIP switches is provided for use with Niles prod-
ucts such as the RSL-6 and RVL-6.
• A supplied 110v-12v DC adapter powers the IRZ6+.
Red "Power" L.E.D. enables you to test for proper power supply operation and shorts between + (positive) and GND (ground) on your sensor connections.
Green "IR" Test L.E.D. enables you to test for proper operation, interference, and for shorts between + and DATA on your sensor connections.
Screw connectors simplify installation.
Printed circuit board design assures
high reliability.
Two year parts and labor warranty.
Proudly made in the USA.
Features and Benefits
In an IRZ6+ system, each zone uses an IR-controlled AM/FM receiver which operates independently. (Using multiple AM/FM receivers rather than a single central tuner allows each zone to select its own radio station.) Typically, you place the receivers in a central location. The IRZ6+ can be tucked away out of sight near the receivers, but should remain accessible for upgrading or changing its configuration.
Install IR sensors/keypads in an appropriate location in each zone. Use an individual home-run of 2conductor shielded cable for each IR
sensor/keypad — West Penn D-291 or equivalent (IR cable of this type may be purchased from Niles).
An IR command from any sensor/keypad is routed to a corresponding DEDICATED flasher output which feeds that zone’s receiver. The IRZ6+ prevents IR conflicts by routing the IR commands from each zone directly to the proper receiver. However, if identical makes and models of receivers are used (a likely situation), the installer must specify the Niles IRC-2 micro flashers. The IRC-2’s attach directly over each receiver’s IR sensor window and fea-
ture a blocking “cover” which prevents IR from “leaking out” to a neighboring receiver.
For control of source components, the IRZ6+ provides 4 configurable flasher outputs. For example, in a simple six zone system with a CD player, an IRC-2 MicroFlasher is attached to the CD player IR sensor window and a blocking cover is installed. The flasher is connected to one of the configurable flasher outputs. The configuration switches for that output are all set to the ON position. See figure

Flasher Configuration switches: Flasher outputs A-D are individually assignable to accept IR signals from any or all of the 6 zones.
Powered by a 12v DC Adapter (Niles Part# XF0019) supplied with unit. Do not substitute other adapters.
Individual level controls to adjust the output power of each flasher. for maximum output, turn controls fully clockwise (Refer to the selection tittled “Operation” for more information.
Individual status input jacks for each zone enables the IRZ6+ to broadcast status feedback. Connect a 12v DC power supply of at least 200 ma output to the switched AC outlet on the rear of each zone preamp/receiver.
LED indicator lights when receiving a command from any IR sensor. If this LED fails to light, or stays lit, a problem is indicated - perhaps electrical interference, or excessive sunlight hitting a sensor. Refer to the Niles “IR Troubleshooting Guide” for more information.
Individual outputs for 10 IR Flashers - 6 dedicated and 4 assignable via dip switches to any or all of the 6 sensors. High speed mosfet output circuitry ensures distortion-free IR transmission. To connect more than one flasher to a single flasher output, refer to figure 4.
Individual inputs for 6 IR sensors - one for each zone. All remote sensors must be homerun using 2- conductor shielded cable. Do not wire the sensors in a “daisy-chain” or connect more than one sensor to a single input. Use the XRP6+ IR Expansion Unit if connecting multiply sensors within a zone.
