T9 software has set the bar for mobile
usability, creating mobile user experiences
that help drive consumer demand for and use
of mobile communications devices and
services. The T9 portfolio now includes XT9
Smart Input: a first of its kind multi-modal
user interface solution for feature-rich
smartphones and advanced mobile devices.
This pioneering user interface is designed to
enable users to easily switch between input
modes, as well as alternate between
numbers, letters, symbols and languages,

Overview
95
User Manual
making it faster and easier to input text.
The following the main innovations introduced
into XT9 software:
- Form Factor Versatility:
XT9 software is a powerful text entry
solution that works on a wide variety of form
factors. This includes traditional 12-key
phone keypad, hard and soft QWERTY
keyboard, half-QWERTY keyboard and
handwriting.
- Mode transitions:
XT9 software makes it easy to switch
between input modes on devices that have
more than one way of entering text. For
example, XT9 will support a device with both
traditional 12-key input and a touchscreen.
Users have access to XT9 in all modes on the
device, making it faster and easier to input
text regardless of how they enter it.
Switching between numbers, letters and
symbols is also easy. And XT9 supports
auto-accenting of words, a plus for typing in
many European languages, like French,
Spanish and Italian.
- Regional error correction
Typing on the little QWERTY keyboard found
on most mobile devices, it's easy to hit a
96
wrong key. XT9 compensates for the
User Manual
challenge presented to big fingers by tiny
keys. For example, if you inadvertently type
in "m-o-o-b," XT9 presents "moon" because
the "b" is just one key away from the "n,"
and the word "moon" is a more likely choice.
- Extensive Language Support
An expert linguistics team, native language
speakers, and other researchers participate
in carefully constructing and testing T9
language databases. New language
databases are continually in development to
make T9 products available to as many
people as possible worldwide. XT9 Smart
Input is available in over 60 languages: in this
device we choose English, Italian, French,
Spain and German.

Text input
The XT9 IME for Android supports ambiguous
and explicit text entry. For all alphabetic
languages, both methods are available.
The keyboard layouts share common keys that
make it easy for the user to get to access
languages, numbers, symbols, input methods, etc.
The diagram below displays most of these keys:
When selected as the XT9 input method, a
horizontal bar appears on top of the keyboard
where the suggestions are displayed in the
sequence of key presses.
The visible selection list is a feature of the XT9
IME where words appear in a horizontal list
above the keyboard. As the user enters
characters, the XT9 IME examines available
databases for words that best match the input.
