Warranty
Newport Corporation warrants that this product will be free from defects in material and workmanship and will comply with Newport’s published specifications at the time of sale for a period of one year from date of shipment. If found to be defective during the warranty period, the product will either be repaired or replaced at Newport's option.
To exercise this warranty, write or call your local Newport office or representative, or contact Newport headquarters in Irvine, California. You will be given prompt assistance and return instructions. Send the product, freight prepaid, to the indicated service facility. Repairs will be made and the instrument returned freight prepaid. Repaired products are warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period or 90 days, whichever first occurs.
Limitation of Warranty
The above warranties do not apply to products which have been repaired or modified without Newport’s written approval, or products subjected to unusual physical, thermal or electrical stress, improper installation, misuse, abuse, accident or negligence in use, storage, transportation or handling. This warranty also does not apply to fuses, batteries, or damage from battery leakage.

1 Introduction
1.1 Scope of the Manual
This manual provides descriptions and operating procedure for the C-Drive DC Servo Amplifier (CDR-DCB) and C-Drive Stepper Amplifier (CDR-STEP). Conventions and Definitions are provided in Section 1, Introduction.
Safety Considerations and Specifications are provided in Section 2, Safety Precautions.
Overview, along with Features and Specifications are provided in Section 3, Features and Specifications.
Software Features of the product are defined in Section 3.
The function of the product including Inputs and Outputs, along with Amplifier Connections is provided in Section 5.
The Operation of the product is defined in Section 6.

1.2 Manual Conventions
The following conventions and standards will be used in this manual.
1.2.1 Acronyms
A word formed from the initial letters of a name, for example: Read Only Memory (ROM). In this manual acronyms will appear on the first occurrence and whenever necessary for clarification, acronyms will be enclosed in parentheses following their definition.
1.2.2 Keys, Buttons and Icons
Computer keyboard keys and onscreen buttons and icons are used in the text to describe many user operations. The key-top symbol as it appears on the keyboard, the button or icon name is represented in boldface type. For example: Ctrl is used for the Control key.
1.2.3 User Input
Text that is required to be typed in, will be shown in the boldface type courier (new) font as shown below:

The following terms and symbols are used in this documentation and also appear on C-Drive Series Amplifiers where safety-related issues occur.
2.1.1 Protective Earth (Ground)

The Protective Earth (Ground) Symbol in the figure above appears on labels affixed to the C-Drive Series Amplifiers, and this symbol identifies terminal which is intended for connection to an external (ground) conductor for protection against electric shock in case of a fault, or the terminal of a protective earth (ground) electrode.

This symbol indicates on the rating plate that the C-Drive Series Amplifiers are suitable for direct current only.

2.3 Safety Considerations
The following general safety precautions must be covered during all phases of operation of this equipment. Failure to comply with these precautions or with specific warnings elsewhere in this manual violates safety standards of design, manufacture, and intended use of the equipment. Disconnect or do not connect the power supply cable in the following circumstances:
If the power supply cable or any other attached cables are
frayed or damaged.
If the unit is exposed to rain or excessive moisture, or liquids
are spilled on it.
If the unit has been dropped or the case is damaged.
If you suspect service or repair is required.
When you clean the case.
To protect the equipment from damage and avoid hazardous situations, follow these recommendations:
Do not make modifications or parts substitutions.
Return equipment to Newport Corporation for service and
repair.
Do not block ventilation openings.
Keep liquids away from unit.
Do not expose equipment to excessive moisture (>90%
humidity).

3 Features and
Specifications
3.1 Product Overview
The CDR-DCB and CDR-STEP models are PWM amplifiers for DC brush and permanent magnet step motors, respectively. These models operate from +48VDC power. Amp OK, Enable and Step/Direction (for CDR-STEP only) signals are optically isolated from the motor power.

CDR-DCB and CDR-STEP amplifiers are configured using CDR­Util Windows software program via RS232 serial interface.
Built with surface-mount technology, these amplifiers offer a full complement of features for DC brush and step motor control.
CDR-DCB can be set to either torque (current) or speed (voltage) mode and is used typically with digital controllers that calculate position and velocity from the motor's encoder.
CDR-STEP driver is able to micro-step precisely and reduce power automatically.
Current-limit provides protection for motors while optimizing acceleration characteristics.
The /ENABLE input logic level is active low. The input is internally pulled up to +5V to interface with most types of standard motion controllers.
MOSFET output stage delivers four-quadrant power for bi­directional acceleration and deceleration of motors.
All models are protected against output short circuits (output to output and output to ground). All models detect base plate over­temperature condition. The amplifier will not latch the fault condition.
3.2 Software for CDR-DCB / STEP
Newport C-Drive Setup Utility (CDR-Util ) software enables you to configure the CDR-DCB or CDR-STEP amplifiers to drive user specified motion devices. CDR-Util software is used to enter and manage configuration information. The CDR-Util user interface features a Windows-based layout designed for ease of use. The software provides simple menus, list boxes, and push button selections for control of the Newport’s CDR-DCB and CDR-STEP amplifiers. Please refer to Section 4 for more detailed information.

4 Software Overview
4.1 Introduction
Newport C-Drive Setup Utility (CDR-Util) software enables you to configure the CDR-DCB or CDR-STEP amplifiers to drive user specified motion devices. CDR-Util software is used to enter and manage configuration information. The CDR-Util user interface features a Windows-based layout designed for ease of use. The software provides simple menus, list boxes, and push button selections for control of the Newport’s CDR-DCB and CDR-STEP amplifiers.
4.2 RS-232 Interface
The serial (RS-232) communication interface on the C-Drive is accessed through the 9 pin Sub-D connector located on the front panel. The pin out is designed to interface directly with an IBM PC or compatible computer, using a straight through cable.

For software installation please use the following procedure:
1. Connect the cable from J4 port to your computer RS-232 port
2. With the computer turned on, insert the software installation CD in the CD drive.
3. Browse to find the "setup.exe" file on the CD.
4. Double-click on the "setup.exe" file and follow the on­screen instructions.
5. Once the installation is complete, the application installs an icon on your desktop. CDR-Util software is now installed.
6. Start the application (no rebooting of the computer is necessary).
4.3.1 Software Set-up
CDR-Util software must be used to configure the CDR-DCB or CDR-STEP amplifiers to drive every new motorized positioner.
CAUTION
Selection of stage model number, motor voltage or motor current
values improper for the motor/stage connected to the driver can
damage the motor.
4.4 Navigating the User Interface
CDR-Util application is set-up in two groups:
Setting up parameters for Newport standard stages/actuators for
which all parameters necessary to drive the device are possibly available in the Newport library.

Setting up parameters for Newport non-standard
stages/actuators for which all parameters are not available in the Newport library.

To exit CDR-Util, click on the EXIT button in the lower right. If configuration settings were changed but not sent to the driver, you will be prompted to do so.
4.5 Configuring Settings for a Newport Standard Stage
To configure settings for a Newport standard stage, do the following:
1. From the main window, choose Select a New Stage button. The application will prompt you to wait while the Newport Library is being read.

2. From Select a Positioner pull down menu select-
Stage/Actuator supported by Newport. Press NEXT.
3. You will now be prompted to select a series of motion device from a list of Newport motion devices supported by the library. Select a motion device series. Press NEXT.
4. You will now be prompted to select the model number of motion device from a list of choices. Select a motion device model number. Press NEXT.
NOTE
Wizard help will guide you through the process of selecting the
necessary parameters to drive your motion device.

The application will display the choices that you have selected.
5. Press ENTER if you want to generate driver configuration based on the selection. Otherwise press BACK button to return to the previous menus.

6. Press SAVE to use the values generated on the right of the screen for configuring the driver, and to return to the driver configuration wizard.
Press BACK to return to the previous menu.
Press Return to Drive Config. button to return to the driver configuration wizard without using the values selected.

Should you decide to edit the settings at that point, press the Edit Settings button. The editable fields will be highlighted.

7. Press Send Settings to Driver button to use the values generated to drive your device.

8. Press Restore Driver Settings to go back to the settings currently present in the device.
9. Press Clear Driver Settings to put the driver in default “unconfigured” state.

4.6 Configuring Settings for a Non­Standard Newport Stage
To configure settings for a Newport stage/actuator for which all the parameters are not available in the Newport library, do the following:
1. From the main window, choose Select New Stage.
2. From Select a Positioner pull down menu select Non- supported stage/actuator. Press NEXT.

3. Select a motor type from available choices.
4. Enter motor voltage (Volts).
5. Enter motor current (Amps). Press NEXT.
Please refer to your motor specifications for more information on these values.

The application is designed to configure both Brush DC and Stepper motors. Depending on your selection you will be prompted to enter motor specific parameters.
NOTE
Wizard help will guide you through the process of selecting the
necessary parameters to drive your motion device.
6. Specify Positioner ID (Name)

6.2 Opto-isolated Amp OK Output
The Amp OK signal indicates amplifier ready to run status. It is completely optically isolated from the amplifier. The input of the optocoupler is driven by the amplifier logic circuits, and the output is an open collector output that can sink up to 10mA.

7.1 Input Power Connection
The CDR amplifier requires +48VDC power from an external power supply such as the Newport CDR-PS-150, CDR-PS-300, or CDR-PS-600. For connection to these power supplies, two cable lengths are available:

Multiple drives can be connected to a single power supply as long as the total power required for all the drives does not exceed the maximum output power of the power supply. Regardless of power rating, Newport recommends not more than two amplifiers be connected to the CDR-PS-xxx power supply when using a star wiring configuration.

9.1 Warranty and Service Policy
Newport Corporation warrants the C-Drive Series Amplifiers to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year after delivery. Newport does not assume liability for installation, labor or incidental or consequential damages.
Returns
Obtain a Return Authorization Number from Newport before returning any product. Newport reserves the right to deduct an adequate service charge to cover inspection, testing, and handling from any credit.
Repairs
All repairs, warranty and non-warranty, are made on a FOB factory basis, and all transportation charges must be prepaid by the Buyer. Obtain a Return Authorization Number from Newport before returning any product to us for repair.

9.2 Fuse Replacement
WARNING
Disconnect DC Power Supply cable before replacing the fuse.
At the rear of the C-Drive Series Amplifier, open the enclosure by removing two center screws and four screws on the bottom (at the edge) with a small, Phillips head screwdriver (see Figure 30).
Remove and inspect the fuse. Replace with only 5A, 250V, F (Fast Blow) fuse.
Close the enclosure then re-install all screws.
