Provide continuous availability for mission critical applications
NEC’s Intel® Xeon™ processor-based fault tolerant servers are designed to provide continuous availability for mission critical applications. These high density servers raise the bar in performance while surpassing limitations imposed by space and budgets. With second generation fault tolerant technology, NEC’s Express5800 FT server supports faster processors and more memory than before. With unique redundant modules that are easy to manage and operate in lockstep this ensures continuous availability.
Achieving fault tolerance in an enterprise Linux application is no easy task. Clustering is expensive and labor-intensive, and cannot ensure continuous uptime. NEC’s Linux-based Express5800 Fault Tolerant server offers 99.999% continuous uptime and no single point of failure, ensuring that Linux applications run in a continuously available mode. From initial pricing and easy setup to long-term simplified maintenance, the Express5800 FT meets increasing demand for high availability and non-stop business operations, while minimizing total cost of ownership.

APPLICATIONS
HIGH AVAILABILITY AND FULL FAULT TOLERANCE
The Express5800/320Lb from NEC Solutions America offers a Linux-based fault-tolerant (FT) server that allows enterprises to achieve high availability while minimizing server maintenance costs. It features Dual Modular Redundancy (DMR) architecture with redundant hardware components including CPUs, memory modules and I/O. All components are hot swappable, so that failed modules can be replaced without interrupting operation.
ENHANCED LINUX KERNEL ENABLES CONTINUOUS UPTIME
The Express5800/320Lb FT server comes pre-installed with a hardened Linux operating system that supports hardware redundancy with failover-enabled drivers. The combination of redundant hardware components and a hardened Linux OS means that normal operation continues and no data is lost, even if an outage or failure occurs. If a component fails, the Express5800 FT isolates it immediately and the application instantly continues to run on the redundant hardware.
Within the Express5800 FT servers are two Intel Xeon Processors. These are duplicated in a separate CPU module and two PCI modules are housed in a compact 4-unit chassis. This four-way architecture provides enough performance to run large, mission-critical Linux applications in a fully fault tolerant environment.

THE IDEAL SERVER SOLUTION FOR MANY INDUSTRIES
An increasing number of industries are realizing the need for fault tolerant Linux availability as a means of reducing costs and ensuring mission-critical applications continue non-stop. NEC’s FT solution helps enterprises in many industries achieve this high availability while reducing IT costs.

SERVER CONSOLIDATION LOWERS TCO
Linux allows a great variety of application stacks, including databases and general-purpose applications. However, server clustering typically associated with Linux deployments requires adding servers that may contend for resources or remain unused, taking up valuable space. With multiple points of failure, cluster configurations often lead to higher costs, greater complexity and software licensing issues.
NEC’s Express5800 FT server allows corporations to achieve high-availability in a Linux environment so they can take advantage of all Linux offers without experiencing the drawbacks of clustering. Since IT only needs to purchase one copy of the OS instead of multiple licenses as they would in a cluster configuration, costs are reduced substantially. It’s extremely compact, as well. With a total chassis height of 7 inches (4U x 1.75”) and standard 19-inch rack width, the server is an impressive combination of density, performance and reliability. NEC’s single-server solution for Linux reduces ongoing support and maintenance costs, as well, resulting in lower total cost of ownership.
EXPANDABLE SOLUTION WITH EXTERNAL NEC STORAGE
NEC’s own hardware RAID Fiber Channel (FC) disk arrays for up to 3.8TB of storage capacity can be used to enhance the flexibility of the Express5800 FT server. Using FC HBAs to connect to as many as two 3U disk arrays, this storage expansion solution employs a 2Gbps FC interface and RAID levels 0,1,5, and 10. NEC’s storage solution offers redundancies of caches, power supplies, fans, battery backups and controllers, and a maximum cache capacity of 512MB per controller. NEC also supports other leading storage products.
Financial. Banks, credit card companies and brokerage opera-
tions must remain in operation at all times to generate income.
Health Care. Fast, reliable access to patient data can be crucial.
Retail. Lost sales result from network downtime, affecting the
bottom line.
Pharmaceutical. Fault tolerance helps preserve the integrity of
laboratory tests and inventory.
Government. The safekeeping of criminal and driving records,
as well as other critical information, is dependent on reliable, continuous network operation.
Utilities. Failed servers can lead to energy crises that affect
hundreds of thousands of people. Continuous uptime in this environment can save millions of dollars by preventing power outages or lost communications.
