ALGO 5 Information for IT Professionals
The ALGO 5 Newborn Hearing Screener is a medical device that performs tests for the hearing ability of
newborns. Although the device is PC based and does have optional networking connectivity, it is a
medical device and installation of third party software or modifications made to the operating system not
only can disturb the stability of the device but also may produce inaccurate results. In fact, the User’s
Manual states:
“…Please avoid practices that can compromise the safe and effective use of the system:
Do not remove the computer from the screening system unless your service representative
specifically instructs you to do so. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the computer.
Installation, modification, or replacement of any computer accessories, circuit cards, components,
or alteration of the CMOS configuration memory may compromise the safe and effective
operation of this device and will void the warranty.
There is no user access to the computer operating system. Never attempt to load software
into the system that has not been supplied or approved by Natus Medical. Attempting to
load any software, computer accessory, or other medical device that has not been
provided or approved by Natus Medical is expressly prohibited and will void the
warranty…”
Care has been taken to minimize access to the operating system. Policies have been set to prevent the
running of any executable from either the USB ports or CD-ROM drive. To assist you with compliance to
your HIPAA policy, a preference can be set to require a user login and password and the system can be
set to time out after a period of inactivity. Please read the chapter on Preferences in the ALGO 5 User
Manual for more details on the options available to the System Administrator for initial configuration of the
system.
One of the advantages of the ALGO 5 device is integrated data management. Patient and test data can
be imported from other ALGO 5 devices or even from you’re HIS system to prepopulate demographic
data if you provide the data in out XML Schema. Data can be exported to other ALGO 5 devices or to OZ,
Hi*Track and ALGO 3 format data management systems including Natus’ ADAM.
The method of data transport is up to you and your facility’s policy. You may use:
• Transfer via USB Flash drive connected to the USB ports
• Transfer via burned CD-R
• Transfer via Ethernet connected to your LAN or a workstation
• Transfer via Wireless LAN
The choice is yours. Note that preferences will allow wired LAN to only accept DHCP connections.
Assignment of domains and fixed IP addresses is not permitted. Wireless LAN will allow you to configure
the standard Wireless parameters and a WEP password. In Preferences, under System Information, you
can find the MAC addresses for both network adaptors, if desired.
If your facility policies prohibit DHCP, we suggest you move data through USB Flash drive or CD-R.
Again, the ALGO 5 has taken care to minimize any potential disturbance of the balance of the system as
a medical device. There is neither a software firewall nor any AntiVirus program installed and installation
of these will void the warranty, however, as mentioned, running executables from both USB and CD-R
have been prevented. You can choose to use the machine stand-alone without any connectivity to your
network or choose to use these features to transfer data more conveniently between devices and other
data management systems as you may choose.
The default login to gain System Administration right access is Admin, password Admin. We suggest you
change this at initial configuration.
