SYSTEM AND MAINS/POWER SUPPLY BEFORE YOU
BEGIN.
! PLACE THE PL AYER ON A CLEAN WORK BENCH WITH A
PROTECTIVE SURFACE BEFORE COMMENCING
DISASSEMBLY.
! REFIT THE CD3.5 AND CD5 TRANSIT SCREWS BEFORE
BEGINNING.
! REFIT THE CDX AND CDX2 TRANSIT SCREWS AND
REMOVE THEM ONLY WHEN YOU ARE READY TO
REMOVE THE OUTER CASE. TAKE CARE THEN THAT THE
CD DRAWER DOES NOT FALL OPEN.
! DO NOT INVERT THE CDS2. WORK FROM UNDERNEATH
WHEN REMOVING THE CASE SCREWS.
! USE THE ANTI-STATIC EARTH STRAP SUPPLIED IN THE
UPDATE KIT.
Introduction
Enhancements
The PIC update brings each player up to the user interface
and play order programming feature set of CD players
manufactured after February 2003 (contact the Naim
Service Department for exact serial numbers).
User Interface
Front Panel Control
This multi-function mode provides an alternative front panel
interface in which fast forward, fast reverse and pause are
selected by pressing and holding next, previous and play
respectively.
To select multi function mode press and hold next while the
player is switched on. To select the standard control mode
press and hold previous while the player is switched on.
Static Pause
If a player is paused for more than 10 minutes it will enter
“static pause” mode in which the transport laser
deactivates and the disc stops spinning. The player can be
left in static pause indefinitely. Deselection of static pause
works in the normal way.
Display Defaults
Regardless of the selected display mode (track, time or off)
the display will default to time when fast forward or fast
reverse are operated or total programmed or disc time
when stopped.
Play Order Programming
Memory Limit
The play order program memory is now limited to 99 events
(program or delete) rather than the previous 20.
Preset Play Orders
Random and reverse play orders can now be selected from
the remote handset (from stop with no play order already in
place). Press prog followed by 1 for random play or prog
followed by 2 for reverse play.
Stop Function
Pressing and holding stop when a play order is
programmed will clear the play order but not reset the
display. A further press and hold of stop will reset the
display.
This PIC (programmable integrated circuit) update to the CD3.5, CDX, CDS2, CD5 and
CDX2 Compact Disc Players improves their ability to play “copy protected” compact
discs that do not comply with the Philips/Sony “Red Book” standard. The new PIC also
provides some user interface and play order programming enhancements. These are
described below. Updates should only be undertaken by authorised Naim distributors or
dealers.

Update Procedure
Disassembly
1. Ensure that the transit screws are fitted throughout the
update procedure. Invert the player on a clean work
surface covered with a protective material - a towel for
example
2. Identify the top cover fixings to be removed from the
diagram below. A diagram on the underside of the CD3.5
additionally illustrates one of two types of top cover to
chassis fixing that may be present on your player. Type
One fixing is four reusable plastic rivets. Type Two fixing is
four self tapping screws with plastic bushes.
For Type One fixing the male and female parts of each
plastic rivet must be prised apart and removed from the
cover. To do this, insert a flat bladed screwdriver or side-
cutters underneath the domed head of each rivet and
lever upwards removing the pin. Carry out the same
levering procedure to remove the female part of each
rivet. The rivets must be reused so do not discard them.
Put them safely to one side.
For Type Two fixing use a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver to
remove the four bushed self-tapping screws. Place the
screws and bushes safely to one side.
3. Using a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver remove the earth
screw and serrated washer located between the left hand
side top cover fixings. Place the screw and washer safely
to one side.
4. Hold the player at the front and back to retain the chassis,
top cover and CD drawer in place and turn it over.
5. With the player on the work surface facing away from you
slide the top cover towards you away from the chassis and
lift it clear. Put the top cover safely to one side.
CD3.5
PIC Replacement
6. Attach the earth strap around your left wrist (if right
handed) and connect its clip to any prominent internal
unpainted metallic feature of the chassis.
7. Use the diagram below to identify the PIC Socket and PIC.
Note the PIC orientation in the socket. There is a
semicircular indent and a dot located at one end of the
PIC. The replacement PIC must be inserted with the same
orientation.
8. Use the PIC extraction tool, gripping the ends of the PIC,
to lift it from its socket. Discard the PIC.
9. Place the replacement PIC squarely into the socket so that
its “legs” line up with the individual sockets. ENSURE
CORRECT PIC ORIENTATION. Apply mild thumb pressure to
push the PIC into the socket so that it is fully home.
Remove the earth strap.
Reassembly
10. Slide the top panel back into place and, gripping the
player at the front and back to retain the chassis, top
cover and CD drawer in place, turn it over.
11. Align the top cover to chassis fixing holes and either refit
the plastic rivets by pressing the male section into the
female or insert and tighten the bushed self tapping
screws. Refit the earthing screw and washer.
12. Your CD3.5 has now been updated. Remove the transit
screws, re-connect it to the system and mains supply, and
switch on. The PIC update provides some enhanced
programming and user interface features. These are
described on Page 1.

Update Procedure
Disassembly
Note: Take care not to subject the player to sudden
movement or shocks that might put undue load on the
printed circuit board and transport suspension systems.
The player must not be inverted.
1. Place the player feet down on a flat, clean work surface
with the back panel facing you. Identify the sub panel
located at the left hand end of the rear panel (behind the
CD Transport area). Using a No. 1 Pozi-Drive screwdriver,
unscrew the two screws holding the sub panel in place and
remove it.
2. The four foot/case retaining screws and one earthing bolt
on the underside of the player must now be removed. This
must be done however WITHOUT INVERTING THE PLAYER.
Rotate the player in stages so that each foot screw and
the earthing screw become accessible over the edge of
the work surface and, working from underneath, remove
each screw using a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver. These
screws/bolt are the only ones on the underside of the
player. There is no danger of removing an incorrect screw.
3. Place the player on the work surface with the front panel
facing you. Reaching behind the player, slowly push on the
rear panel so that the chassis begins to slide forward and
out of the external case. When the chassis is
approximately halfway out, detach the cable connecting
the lid sensor mechanism from its push-fit connector on
the main printed circuit board. Continue to slide the
chassis out of the case until it is completely clear.

surface covered with a protective material - a towel for
example
2. Prize out the small plastic plug located on the underside of
the player centrally towards the front panel.
3. Insert a No. 2 Pozi-Drive screwdriver through the access
hole revealed by removal of the plastic plug - a concealed
screw will be found directly in line with the hole. Engage
the screw unscrew and remove it through the hole.
4. Identify the four large Pozi-Drive screws closest to the feet
on the underside of the unit - two along each side.
Remove all four screws and the star washers fitted under
the front two. These screws release the top panel.
5. Hold the player along each side, gripping to retain the top
panel in place, and turn it over.
6. Remove the cover, refit the concealed screw (removed in
Stage 4) to the underside of the cover with two turns
clockwise. The cover is now ready to be slid back into
position after the PIC replacement. Put the top panel
safely to one side.

11. Lower the top panel back into place, front edge first, with
the back edge raised slightly and positioned 20mm
rearward. Slide the panel forward at the last moment so
that the screw removed in Stage 4 engages with the slot
feature in the unit’s front panel.
12. Hold the top panel in place while turning the player up-
side-down again. Replace and tighten the four panel
retaining screws, ensuring the front pair are fitted with star
washers, and tighten the screw through the access hole.
Replace the plastic plug. Remove the transit screws.
