Subject: Mineral Oil Policy
SCOPE
Over the years, refrigeration systems have changed remarkably. Until the early
1990s, almost all commercial refrigeration systems contained CFC refrigeran ts
and mineral oil lubricants. The mid to late 1990s systems began to change with
new refrigerant blends and refrigerant s, plus the addition of alkyl benzene
lubricants and polyol ester oil.
T oday many o f the older refrigeration systems wi th mineral oil and alkyl benze ne
lubricants are in the process of replacement with the current polyol ester oil
refrigeration systems. When that happens, the question to the Service
Department is; “Can I use the old tu bing and/or co ndenser for a remote
installation?”
ACTIONS:
To briefly answer that question: “no”.
Best practice recommendation is do not mix two types of refrigerants and oils.
T oday’ s refrigerants and oils act as a so lvent washing everything accumulated in
the system over the years into the new expansion valve, head pressure control
valve, compressor , etc. For this reason, mixin g a new refrigeration system with
old component is against Manitowoc Beverage Systems policy and will void any
new equipment warranty.
