Preparation
Thoroughlyinspecttheareawheretheequipmentisto be

Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperation
andwhile performinganadjustmentorrepairto protectyour

injurytothe eyes.
Do notoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinterouter
garments.Donotwearjewelry,longscarvesorother
looseclothing,whichcould becomeentangledin moving

Operation
1. Donot puthandsorfeetnearrotatingparts,inthe
auger/impellerhousingor chuteassembly.Contactwiththe
rotatingpartscanamputatehandsandfeet.
2. The auger/impellercontrolleveris asafetydevice.Never
bypassitsoperation.Doingso makesthe machineunsafe
andmaycausepersonalinjury.
3. The controlleversmustoperateeasilyin bothdirections
andautomaticallyreturntothe disengagedpositionwhen
released.
4. Neveroperatewitha missingor damagedchuteassembly.
Keepall safetydevicesinplaceandworking.
5. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in a poorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessand

16.Ifthe machineshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe
engine,disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundit against
the engine.Inspectthoroughlyfordamage.Repairany
damagebeforestartingandoperating.
17.Disengageallcontrolleversandstopenginebeforeyou
leavethe operatingposition(behindthe handles).Wait
untilthe auger/impellercomestoa completestopbefore
uncloggingthe chuteassembly,makinganyadjustments,or
inspections.
18.Neverputyourhandin thedischargeor collectoropenings.
Alwaysuse theclean-outtoolprovidedtounclogthe dis-
chargeopening.Donot unclogchuteassemblywhileengine
isrunning.Shut offengineandremainbehindhandlesuntil
all movingpartshavestoppedbefore unclogging.
19.Useonly attachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythe
manufacturer(e.g.wheelweights,tirechains,cabsetc.).

Maintenance & Storage
1. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheir proper
operationregularly.Refertothe maintenanceandadjust-
mentsectionsofthis manual.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspectingmachinedisen-
gageall controlleversandstopthe engine.Wait untilthe
auger/impellercometoa completestop. Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe engineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkbolts andscrewsfor propertightnessatfrequent
intervalstokeepthe machineinsafeworkingcondition.
Also,visuallyinspectmachinefor anydamage.
4. Do notchangetheenginegovernorsettingor over-speed
theengine.The governorcontrolsthemaximumsafe
operatingspeedoftheengine.
5. Snowthrowershaveplatesandskidshoesaresubjectto
wearanddamage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequently
checkallcomponentsandreplacewith originalequipment
manufacturer's(OEM) partsonly."Useof partswhichdo
notmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"
6. Checkcontrolsperiodicallytoverify theyengageand
disengageproperlyandadjust,if necessary.Referto the
adjustmentsectioninthis operator'smanualfor instructions.

twocontrolcablesto the lowerhandle.Twoofthese
cabletiesareon eacharm,andthirdon thetop
crossbarof thelowerhandle.Tightenthesecable
tiestosecurethe cableto thelowerhandle.See

Adjusting Auger Cable
Periodicadjustmentto theaugercontrolcablemaybe
requireddueto normalstretchandwearon the belt.
Adjustmentisneededif theaugersseemtohesitate
whileturning,but theenginemaintainsspeed,or
continueturningwiththe augercontroldisengaged.
1. Loosentherearhex bolton the cableadjustment

1. Stopengineandwaitseveralminutesbeforechecking
oil level.Removeoilfill capanddipstick.
2. Wipedipstickclean,insertitintooilfill holeand
tightensecurely.
3. Withengineon levelground,oil mustbeto FULLmark
on dipstick. SeeFigure8. Ifoil levelislow,addoil.
andfreefromrustor otherforeignparticles.Make
sureto wipeoff any spilledfuelbeforestartingthe
engine.
6. Attheendofthejob,emptythefueltankif thesnow
throwerisnotgoingtobe usedfor30 daysor longer.

Donot primeif temperatureis above500F;prime
twotimesbetween500Fand 150F;andprimefour

7. Graspstarterhandleandpullropeoutslowlyuntilengine
reachesstartd compressioncycle(ropewillpull
slightlyharderatthispoint).Lettheroperewindslowly.
8. Pullropewitha rapid,continuous,fullarmstroke.
Keepinga firmgriponthestarterhandle,lettherope
returntothestarterslowly.Repeatuntilenginestarts.
9. Astheenginewarmsup,rotatethechokeknobslowly
toOFFposition.Iftheenginefalters,returntoFULL
choke,then slowlymovetoOFFchokeposition.
10.Allowtheengineto warmup fora fewminutes
becausetheenginewill notdevelopfullpoweruntilit
reachesoperatingtemperature.

To Stop The Snow Thrower
1. Tostopthe wheels,releasethedrivecontrol.
2. Tostopthrowingsnow,releasetheaugercontrol.
3. Tostopengine,pushthrottlecontrolleverto OFFor
pulloutthe key(eithermethodworks).Donotturnkey.

Auger Control Test

off theengine.Waitforall movingpartsto stopbefore
readjustingtheaugercontrolcable asshowninthe
"SetupAndAdjustment"sectiononpage7.

Clearing The Snow

1. Starttheenginefollowingstartinginstructions.
2. Allowtheenginetowarmupfora fewminutesas
theenginewill notdevelopfullpoweruntilitreaches
operatingtemperature.
3. Rotatethechuteassemblytothedesireddirection,
awayfrombystandersand/orbuildings.
4. Makingcertainnobystandersorobstaclesarein
frontofthe unit,squeezetheaugercontrolcompletely
againsttheupperhandleto fullyengagetheaugers.
5. Whiletheaugercontrolisengaged,squeezethedrive
controlcompletelyagainsttheupperhandleto engage
thewheels.Donot "feather"thedrivecontrol.
6. Asthesnowthrowerstartstomove,maintaina firm
holdon thehandle,andguidethesnowthroweralong
thepathto becleared.
7. Releasetheaugeranddrivecontrolsto stopthe snow
throwingactionandforwardmotion.
NOTE:Yourunitisequippedwitha clutchinthetransmis-
sion.If thewheelsstopturningwhiletryingto discharge
largevolumesofsnow,immediatelydisengagethedrive
controlandallowthe rotatingaugersto dischargesnow
fromthehousing.Reducetheclearingwidthandcontinue
operation.
8. On eachsucceedingpass,readjustthechute
assemblytothedesiredpositionandslightlyoverlap
thepreviouslyclearedpath.
Operating Tips
1. Formostefficientsnowremoval,removesnow
immediatelyafteritfalls.
2. Dischargesnowdownwindwheneverpossible.
Slightlyoverlapeachpreviousswath.
3. Settheskid shoes1/4"belowtheshaveplatefor
normalusage.Theskidshoesmaybeadjusted
upwardforhard-packedsnow.
NOTE:Itis notrecommendedthatyouoperatethis
snowthrowerongravelas loosegravelcanbe easily
pickedupand thrownbythe augercausingpersonal

4. If forsomereason,youhavetooperatethesnow
throweron gravel,keepthe skidshoeinthe highest
positionformaximumclearancebetweentheground
andtheshaveplate.
5. Cleanthesnowthrowerthoroughlyaftereachuse.

Theclean-outtool isconvenientlyfastenedtothe rearof
theaugerhousingwitha mountingclip.
Whensnowandice collectin the chuteassemblyduring
operation,usethis toolto safelycleanthe chuteand

subjectto misuse,abuse,commercialuse,neglect,accident,improper
maintenance,alteration,vandalism,theft,fire,water,ordamagebecause

b. Logsplitterpumps,valves,andcylindershavea separateoneyear
warranty.
c. Routinemaintenanceitemssuchaslubricants,filters,blade
sharpening,tune-ups,brakeadjustments,clutchadjustments,deck
adjustments,andnormaldeteriorationof theexteriorfinishdueto use
orexposure.
d. Servicecompletedbysomeoneotherthananauthorizedservice
dealer.
e. MTDdoesnotextendanywarrantyforproductssoldor exported
outsideofthe UnitedStates,itspossessionsandterritories,except
thosesoldthroughMTD'sauthorizedchannelsofexportdistribution.
f. ReplacementpartsthatarenotgenuineMTDparts.
g. Transportationchargesandservicecalls.
No impliedwarranty,includinganyimpliedwarranty of merchant-
ability of fitness for a particularpurpose,applies after the applicable
periodof expresswritten warranty aboveas to the partsas identi-
fied. Noother expresswarranty,whetherwritten or oral, except as
mentionedabove,givenby any personor entity,includingadealer
or retailer,with respect to anyproduct,shallbind MTD.Duringthe
periodof the warranty, the exclusive remedyis repairor replacement
of the productas set forth above.
Theprovisionsas set forth inthis warranty providethe sole and
exclusive remedyarising from the sale. MTDshall not be liable
for incidentalor consequential loss or damageincluding,without
limitation, expenses incurredfor substitute or replacementlawncare
