Overview
Thank you for choosing the MS-9858 v1.X Micro-ATX mainboard from MSI.
Based on the innovative AMD® 780E & SB710 con-
trollers for optimal system efciency, the MS-9858
accommodates the latest AMD® Sempron, Athlon 64,
Dual-Core Athlon 64 X2 processors under 95W (TDP) in Socket AM2 and supports 2 DDR2 400/533/667/800 SO-DIMM slots to provide the maximum of 4GB mem-
ory capacity.
In the entry-level and mid-range market segment, the
MS-9858 can provide a high-performance solution for
today’s front-end and general purpose workstation, as
well as in the future.

Hardware Setup
This chapter provides you with the information on
mainboard hardware congurations. Incorrect setting of jumpers and connectors may damage your main­board. Please pay special attention not to connect these headers in wrong direction. DO NOT adjust any jumper while the mainboard is powered on.

Installing Memory Modules
Locate the SO-DIMM slot. Align the notch on the DIMM with the key on

Important
You can barely see the golden nger if the DIMM is properly inserted in the DIMM slot.

You may use the 20-pin ATX power supply as you like. If you’d like to use the 20-pin ATX power supply, please plug your power supply along with pin 1 & pin 13. There is also a foolproof design on pin 11, 12, 23 & 24 to
avoid wrong installation.

The DB15-pin female connector is provided for monitor.
DVI-D Port
The DVI-D (Digital Visual Interface) connector allows you to connect a LCD monitor.
It provides a high-speed digital interconnection between the computer and its display
device. To connect an LCD monitor, simply plug your monitor cable into the DVI-D connector, and make sure that the other end of the cable is properly connected to your monitor (refer to your monitor manual for more information.)
HDMI Port
The High-Denition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an all-digital audio/video interface capable of transmitting uncompressed streams. HDMI supports all TV format, includ­ing standard, enhanced, or high-denition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on
a single cable.
E-SATA Port
The eSATA port is provided for eSATA external hard disk drive.
USB Port
The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is for attaching USB devices such as keyboard, mouse, or other USB-compatible devices.
S/PDIF
This connector is used to connect S/PDIF (Sony & Philips Digital Interconnect For­mat) interface for digital audio transmission.

The standard RJ-45 LAN jack is for connection to the Local Area Network (LAN). You can connect a network
cable to it.
LED Color LED State Condition
Left Yellow Off LAN link is not established.
Right Green Off 10 Mbit/sec data rate is selected.
Audio Ports
These audio connectors are used for audio devices. It is easy to differentiate
between audio effects according to the color of audio jacks.
On (Steady state) LAN link is established.
On (brighter & pulsing) The computer is communicating with another computer on the LAN.
On 100 Mbit/sec data rate is selected.
Orange On 1000 Mbit/sec data rate is selected.
Line-In (Blue) - Line In, is used for external CD player, tapeplayer or
other audio devices. Line-Out (Green) - Line Out, is a connector for speakers or head-
phones.
Mic (Pink) - Mic, is a connector for microphones.

This connector is a high-speed Serial ATA II interface port. Each connector can connect to one Serial ATA II device.

Important
Please do not fold the Serial ATA cable into 90-degree angle. Otherwise, data loss may occur during transmission.
Chassis Intrusion Connector: JCHASSIS1
This connector is provided to connect the chassis intrusion switch cable. If the chassis is opened, the chassis intrusion mechanism will be activated. The sys­tem will record this status and show a warning message on the screen. To clear
the warning, you must enter the BIOS utility and clear the record.

Fan Power Connector: CPU_FAN1, SYS_FAN1
The fan power connector supports system cooling fan with +12V. When con­necting the wire to the connectors, always note that the red wire is the positive and should be connected to the +12V; the black wire is Ground and should be connected to GND. If the mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset onboard, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control.

Important
Please refer to the recommended CPU fans at processor’s ofcial website
or consult the vendors for proper CPU cooling fan.
Fan cooler set with 3- or 4-pin power connector are both available for
CPU_FAN1.

This connector is a 16550A high speed communications port that sends/re­ceives 16 bytes FIFOs. You can attach a serial device to it through the optional
serial port bracket.

LVDS Flat Panel Connector: JLVDS1
The LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) connector provides a digital interface typically used with at panels. After connecting an LVDS interfaced at panel to the JLVDS1, be sure to check the panel datasheet and set the JVDD1 jumper (p. 2-15)
to proper power voltage.

Clear CMOS Jumper: JCMOS1
There is a CMOS RAM onboard that has a power supply from an external bat­tery to keep the data of system conguration. With the CMOS RAM, the system
can automatically boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the
system conguration, set the jumper to clear data.

Important
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off. Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the system is on; it will damage the mainboard.

The PCI Express slot supports the PCI Express interface expansion card. The CON1 is Mini PCI-E connector for wireless LAN, TV tuner, and Robson

The PCI slot supports LAN card, SCSI card, USB card, and other add-on cards that comply with PCI specications.

Important
When adding or removing expansion cards, make sure that you unplug the power supply rst. Meanwhile, read the documentation for the expansion card to congure any necessary hardware or software settings for the expansion card, such as jumpers, switches or BIOS conguration.
