Remove the back cover and battery
To insert SIM and memory cards, remove the back cover.
Note: Don’t use tools to remove the cover—doing so may damage your phone.
Take o the back cover.

Put in the cards
To insert your SIM card or an optional microSD memory card, follow these instructions.
Caution: Make sure you use the correct size SIM card and don’t cut the SIM card. Don’t use tools to remove the battery—doing so may damage your phone.
Insert the SIM card first, then insert the optional microSD card.

Put on the cover & power on
Put on the back cover. Charge your phone fully and turn the power on. Then select your language and follow the screen prompts to get started.

Note: To remove the SIM card, slide the lever on the slot.
SIM card insert graphic. After the battery is removed, the SIM card is inserted in the slot on the left with the clipped corner to the upper left. The SDcard is inserted in the right slot.

Charge up & power on.
Note: Fully charge your phone before using it.
Press & hold Power until the screen lights up.
Battery in and power on graphic. Put the battery back in top down first and snap the cover on. After you charge the phone, press and hold the Power button until the screen lights up.
Sign in
After you power on, just follow the screen prompts to get started.
If you use Gmail™, you already have a Google™ account—if not, you can create an account during setup. Signing into your Google account lets you access, sync, and backup your stu. See your Google apps, contacts, calendar, photos, and more.
Tips & tricks
Wi-Fi network: For faster Internet access or to conserve mobile data use, swipe
the status bar down with two fingers, then tap > Wi-Fi. There’s more in “Wi-Fi
networks”.
Accounts: To add, edit, or delete accounts, swipe up > Settings > Accounts.
• To set up email accounts, see “Email”.
For help with your Google account, visit www.google.com/accounts.
Note: This phone supports apps and services that may use a lot of data, so make sure your data plan meets your needs. Contact your service provider for details.
Battery life
Your phone processes tons of information. Depending on what you use, that can take a lot of power.
When your phone is stationary, not charging, or not in use for a period of time, unnecessary background processes are shut down to optimize battery life.
To see what’s using up battery power, swipe up
To help improve battery life, swipe up
> Settings > Battery > Battery saver, and
turn it on.

Tips & tricks
To save even more battery life between charges, you could reduce:
• Activity of seldom used apps: Swipe up > Settings > Battery, then tap Menu > Battery optimization > All apps. Tap the app you want to adjust, then tap
Optimize.
• Widgets that stream information to your home screen, like news or weather.
• Unused online accounts that you registered: Swipe up > Settings > Accounts.
• Recording or watching videos, listening to music, or taking pictures.

Quick start: Home screen & apps
The home screen is what you see when you turn on your phone. From here you can explore apps and more.
Note: Software updates happen frequently, so your screen may look a little dierent.

Home screen. At the top, tap the Google bar to type search options or tap the right hand microphone icon to speak a search. Icons at the top show notifications and phone status icons. Swipe up from center bottom to get to your apps. App icons along the bottom are commonly used apps: phone, message, Google Chrome, Gallery, amd camera.

Open app list: Swipe up , then swipe up to scroll through apps.
Return: To return to the home screen from any location, tap Home . If One button nav is turned on, tap the fingerprint sensor to return home. See “Control with one

Pages: To add a page, drag an app to the right side of the screen until you see a white bar. You can add multiple pages. To see other pages of shortcuts and widgets

Search
At the top of the home screen, tap the Google Search box for a text search or tap to search by voice.
When you type, suggestions appear below the search field:
• To search for a suggestion, tap it.
• To search for text in the search field, tap on the keyboard.
Tip: To close the keyboard, tap .
Status & notifications
At the top of the screen, icons on the left notify you about new messages or events. If you don’t know what an icon means, swipe the status bar down for details.
Tip: Getting too many notifications? Touch and hold a notification to see which app is sending them to you. Then you can turn them o.

Volume screen. Press the Volume keys up or down to control the volume for Ring Notification, Media, and Alarm sounds. On screen, change the volume using slide bars.
Tap to show all volume controls. Tap again to show only the ringtone volume.
Set the ringtone, media or alarm volume.
Tap an icon to mute or set to vibrate.
Do not disturb
To turn o some or all sounds, swipe the status bar down with two fingers and tap Do not disturb. Select one of these options:
Total silence: Turn o all sounds and alarms. Override sound settings from other
apps. Set how long to stay in this mode, or choose indefinitely.
Alarms only: Set how long you want to only hear alarms, or choose indefinitely. Tap MORE SETTINGS to customize which other interruptions to receive.
Priority only: Set how long you want to only hear priority interruptions, or choose indefinitely. Tap MORE SETTINGS to customize which interruptions to receive.
Tip: To create an exception for repeat callers that allows a call from the same person within a 15 minute period, tap MORE SETTINGS > Priority only allows > Repeat callers.
Download apps
Google Play
Get music, movies, books, apps, games, and more.
Find it:
Search: Use the search bar to search for apps.
Download: To download an app, tap it to see details, then tap INSTALL or BUY.
Share: To share an app you found on the Google Play, tap it to see details and then
Play Store
tap .
Reinstall: To show or reinstall apps you downloaded from Google Play, tap > My apps & games.
Use a computer: To find and manage apps from any computer, go to http://play.
google.com using your Google account and password.
There, you can browse apps on the big screen, manage your apps across devices (like a phone and tablet), and even set new apps to download to your devices.
Enjoy music, movies, and more: You can also use Google Play to download music, movies, TV shows, and more. See “Play music” and “Play Movies & TV” apps.

Apps from the web
You can get apps from other online app stores using your browser.
Tip: Choose your apps and updates carefully, as some may impact your phone’s performance—see “Choose carefully”.
Note: When installing an app, make sure you read the alerts that tell you what information the app will access. If you don’t want the app to access this information, cancel the installation.
To let your phone install apps that are not on Google Play, swipe up Security, then tap the Unknown sources switch to turn it on.
For information about downloading files from your browser, see “Downloads”.
Choose carefully
Here are a few tips:
• To help prevent spyware, phishing, or viruses, use apps from trusted sites, like the Google Play.
• In Google Play, check the app’s ratings and comments before installing.
• If you doubt the safety of an app, don’t install it.
• Apps use up memory, data, battery, and processing power—some more than others. If you’re not happy with how much memory, data, battery or processing power an app is using, uninstall it.

• Monitor children’s access to apps to help prevent exposure to inappropriate content.
• Certain apps may not provide completely accurate information. Take care, especially when it comes to personal health.
Set app permissions
You will only be asked for permissions when you use a feature in an app, instead of immediately when you install the app.
To modify the app permissions settings, swipe up the app and tap Permissions.
To modify the app permissions by app type (such as Calendar or Camera) at any time, swipe up
> Settings > Apps, then tap Settings > App permissions.

Take care of your apps
Find it: Swipe up , then swipe up to scroll through apps
To close the apps screen, tap Home
Uninstall apps: To remove an app from a home screen page, touch and hold the app, then drag it to Remove. The app isn’t removed from your phone, just the home screen.
To remove an app from your phone, touch and hold the app, then drag it to Uninstall.
To disable an app or force it to stop running, swipe up
DISABLE removes the app from your menu—to enable it, reopen this window and tap ENABLE ( tap Disabled to get quicker access to the disabled apps list first).
If an app locks up your phone as soon as you turn it on, restart in Safe Mode: Press and hold the Power button. When you see the Power o option, press and hold it to select the Reboot to safe mode option. Your phone restarts with Safe mode in the lower left. Then, try removing the app.
Reinstall apps: To reinstall apps from the Google Play, swipe up > Play Store, then tap for download.
See app details: Swipe up , touch and hold an app, then drag it into App info.
See app data usage: To show which apps are using the most data, swipe up > Settings > Data usage > Cellular date usage. For more, see “Data use”.

Update your phone
Use your phone or computer to check, download, and install phone software updates:
• Using your phone:
If your phone notifies you about an update, follow the instructions to download and install it.
To manually check for updates, swipe up updates. Your phone downloads updates over your Wi-Fi connection (if available) or mobile network. We recommend that you download updates over a Wi-Fi connection. Remember, these updates can be quite large (25MB or more) and may not be available in all countries. If the mobile network updates are not available in your country, update using a computer.
Note: When updating your phone, make sure you have enough battery power to complete the update.
• Using your computer:
On your computer, go to www.motorola.com/update.

Control with one touch
Lock and unlock your phone, navigate your phone and more with just one touch.
Find it:
Activating One button nav will remove the Back from your screen. You will navigate your phone using the fingerprint sensor instead.
To navigate using the fingerprint sensor, use these gestures:
Home: Tap quickly on the fingerprint sensor to go to your home screen.
Back: Swipe right to left on the sensor to go back to the previous screen.
Recents: Swipe left to right on the sensor to view recent apps.
Lock: Press the sensor until you feel a short vibration and then release to lock the

Tips & tricks
• Want to hide sensitive or private notifications? Tap Moto > Moto Display and set which apps can show notifications and how much to display.
• Use Moto Display to pause or restart your music when your phone is sleeping.
• Tap Moto > Moto Actions to activate the Swipe to shrink screen feature to reduce the size of your screen with a swipe and make it easier to use one-handed.

Controls and gestures
Touch
Find your way around:
Tap: Choose an icon or option.
Touch and hold: See more options.
Drag: Move items on the home screen.
Swipe: Scroll through lists or between screens.
Pinch or double-tap: Zoom in and out on websites, photos and maps.
Twist: Twist a map with two fingers to rotate it, and pull two fingers down to tilt it.
Back: Tap Back to go to the previous screen.
Home: Tap Home to return to the home screen.
Recents: Tap Recents to see your recent apps (or browser tabs), and tap an app
to reopen it. Double tap to quickly switch between your recent apps.
Note: If One button nav is active, quickly swipe right twice to switch between apps.
To remove an app from the recent list, swipe it left, right or tap swipe up or down.
Tip: You don’t need to remove apps from Overview for your phone to run eciently.
Split screen: From the recent apps list, touch and hold an app and then drag it to the
top of the screen to view two apps at once. Not all apps will work in split screen.
Menus: When or appears on a screen, you can tap it to open options for the
current screen.
Close Keyboard: To close a keyboard, tap .
Press Power button
Your Power button helps in a few ways.
. To scroll the list,
Power o: Press and hold the Power button, then tap Power o.
Sleep: To conserve battery power, prevent accidental touches, or to wipe smudges o your touchscreen, put the touchscreen to sleep by pressing the Power button.
Wake up: Press the Power button again.
Reboot: To reboot your phone, press and hold the Power button , then tap Restart.
Tip: To add security to your phone, see “Protect”.
Press Volume buttons
Your volume buttons help in a few ways:
Ringer volume: Press the buttons when your phone is ringing to silence it.
Earpiece volume: Press the buttons during a call.
Music/video volume: Press the buttons during a song or video.
Tip: For more on volume control, see “Volume & interruptions”.
Speak
Just tell your phone what you want.
Tip: Speak naturally but clearly, like using a speakerphone.
Dialing and commands: Say “OK Google” to control your phone by voice.
To dial, say “Call” and then a contact name or phone number. Or, say a command like “Send text,” “Go to” an app, or “Help” for voice command help.
Tip: If a contact has more than one number, you can say which number to call (for example, “Call Joe Black Mobile” or “Call Suzi Smith Work”).
Search: Tap on the home screen to search by voice, or say “OK Google” to speak your search.
• To change your voice input and text-to-speech settings, swipe up > Settings > Languages & input.
Text entry: On a keyboard, tap , then speak your message or search text. You can also speak punctuation.
Tip: To make your phone read out loud, see “TalkBack”.
On, o, lock & unlock
Your touchscreen is on when you need it and o when you don’t. To turn the screen on, press the Power button.

Screen o and on: Press the Power button to turn the screen o and on.
Screen lock: To unlock the screen, touch and drag up. To use a pattern, PIN, or password to unlock your screen, swipe up > Settings > Security > Screen lock (see “Screen lock”).
Notifications: Double tap a notification in the lock screen to open it. You’ll be prompted to enter your password.
Tip: To prevent notifications from appearing in the lock screen, swipe up Settings > Notifications, tap an app, and select On the lock screen > Don’t show
notifications at all.
Owner info: To add a message to your lock screen, swipe up > Settings > Security, tap
> Lock screen message.
Add a lock screen message for anyone who finds your phone. Drag up for voice assist.
Drag up to unlock your screen.
Drag up to open the camera.

Tip: Don’t put your mobile number as your contact info unless you can access your
voicemail from another device.
Screen timeout: To change your timeout (screen locks automatically), swipe up > Settings > Display > Sleep.
Customize sounds & appearance
Customize your phone’s sounds and display settings:
Ringtone and notifications: Swipe up > Settings > Sound.
Vibrate or silent: To make your phone vibrate, turn on Also vibrate for calls. To
turn o ringtones for incoming calls, swipe up
> Settings > Sound > Phone
ringtone > None.
Ringtone for a contact: To set a personal ringtone for a contact, swipe up >
Contacts, tap the contact, then tap > Menu > Set ringtone.
Display settings: To change brightness, animation, and other display settings, swipe
> Settings > Display.

Rotate: In many apps, the touchscreen switches from portrait to landscape when you
rotate your phone. To turn this on or o, swipe the status bar down with two fingers and tap Auto-rotate or Portrait.
Language and region: To set your menu language and region, swipe up >
Settings > Languages & input > Languages.
Redecorate your home screen
For quick access to your favorite things, customize your home screen the way you want.
Change wallpaper: Touch and hold an empty spot on the home screen, then tap
WALLPAPERS.
Add a home screen page: Drag an app to the right side of the home screen until a
new page appears. You can add multiple pages.
Add shortcuts: Swipe up , touch and hold an app, then drag it to one of your
home screen pages. To see all your apps, swipe up
Create shortcut folders: Drag one shortcut onto another. Add more shortcuts by
dragging them onto the first shortcut. To name the folder, tap it and enter a name below the apps.

Add widgets: Touch and hold an empty spot on the home screen, tap WIDGETS,
touch and hold a widget, then drag it to your home screen.
Resize widgets: You can resize some widgets—touch and hold a widget until you feel
a vibration, then release. Drag the white circles at the edges to resize.
Move or delete widgets & shortcuts: Touch and hold a widget or shortcut until
you feel a vibration (or see the icon expand if vibrate is turned o). Then drag it to another spot, another page, or
Remove.
Note: Removing a shortcut from your home screen doesn’t uninstall the app from your phone.
Quick settings
For quick access to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, brightness, and other settings, swipe the status bar or lock screen down with two fingers. For even more settings, tap
