Problem

Service is aware of an accessory issue that affects proper Battery Metering when using some SNN5683A batteries. The SNN5683A batteries, manufactured with LiShen E14 cells, were programmed with incorrect metering values. Relevant batteries will show the wrong steps on meter during discharge. discharge should be shown on the battery meter according first column below, but the problematic batteries show different behavior (most time on 1 bar). Customer will notice batteries transition early from 3 to 2 bars, and 2 to 1 bar, which may be interpreted as “Short Battery Life”.

information below indicates the estimated exposure quantities per region.

The SNN5683A batteries of concern can be easily identified by the Cell Code “6U”. These are the 2
nd
and 3rd characters on the battery’s date code which is
directly beside the battery part number. See Image Below.

Impacted Cell Date Codes: OEH – PAF
Good Cell Date Codes: PAG and later
The Cell Date Code can be used to identify 6U cells that were manufactured during the relevant timeframe WW47 ’04 thru WW05 ‘05. These are the characters 9-11 on the battery’s date code which is directly beside the battery part number. See Image Above.

Solution

All internal inventories of the SNN5683A battery have been separated in the distribution centers. A total of 263K affected batteries were identified after screening from all locations. This was completed on 3/9/2005. All concerned material has been purged. Re-Programming of the affected batteries was determined not to be a cost-effective solution.
Field Service Action
Customer Returns:
When servicing customer returns for the affected products listed above, regardless of customer complaint, then:
1. Inspect the customer’s battery to determine if it is impacted by this issue. a. If the customer’s battery is determined to not be impacted by this
issue, then follow normal troubleshooting techniques to identify and repair fault, per the customer complaint.
2. Replace customer’s battery.
Service Inventory: Please use the information, contained in this FSB, to immediately purge existing SNN5683A inventory of relevant LiShen E14 cells.
