The Evolving “Sport Utility Truck”
Developer’s message
Koichi Namiki
1
Since being launched in 1978, Mitsubishi pickups have been widely appreciated by customers all over the world. The new 5th generation L200 will inherit the DNA of its predecessors and further advance its concept.
Recently the usage of pickup trucks has been expanding and customers’ preferences have been diversifying. It’s no exaggeration to say that these trends were pioneered by the L200.
From the previous generation, we initiated the concept of a “Sport Utility Truck (SUT)” that is suitable for private and family use in addition to commercial use, its prime duty. The goal with the new L200 is to evolve this original Mitsubishi concept and provide the “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck” that gives customers even greater driving pleasure and pride of ownership.
Its key features are:
- An innovative design reminiscent of a lean, athletic body with no excess bulk.
- High performance, quietness and better fuel efciency provided by a new all-aluminium “MIVEC” diesel engine incorporating state-of-the-art technologies.
- Driving ease unlikely for a large body size, whether driving on highways or narrow streets, thanks to the well thought-out chassis and suspension design.
- A surprisingly comfortable cabin like a passenger car’s with an enlarged interior space, ride comfort, quietness, dual zone air conditioner and more.
- Improved reliability and durability, demonstrated especially in harsh environments, due to optimised body structures based on Mitsubishi’s wealth of experience in road conditions all over the world.
- High safety performance that protects all passengers, provided by the high-rigidity RISE body and ASTC vehicle stability system.
We are condent the new L200 will satisfy not only pickup lovers, but also sedan and SUV users. I would be thankful if you would make the effort to communicate the charm of the new L200 to as many customers as possible.
Market trends for mid-class pickup trucks
Pickup truck demand has only slightly increased over the years and developing countries are forecasted to account for 60% (currently 50%) of the pickup truck market by 2016.
The market share for the L200 is around 10%. Competitors are expected to make full model changes in the highly active market.

History of L200 model
In recent years, there has been considerable diversication in what customers look for in pickup trucks. Starting from the 4th-generation, the L200 has embodied the Sport Utility Truck concept, which combines the comfort of a passenger car with the functionality and reliability of a pickup to meet consumers’ diversifying needs. Use of the distinctive “J-line” to connect the double cab and cargo bed contributes to a generously roomy interior space and agile driving performance. While maintaining the concept of the previous model, the all-new 5th-generation L200 has evolved to become a more rened, stylish pickup truck.

L200
The Double Cab variant, which does not often carry a heavy load, retains the distinctive “J-line” separating the cab and cargo bed. It looks stylish from the side and features a horizontal line along the cargo bed.
The tail of the cargo bed in the Club Cab variants has been lifted so that its line becomes neatly horizontal when loaded.

Upward-sloping line
The distinctive and innovative face — the new look of Mitsubishi Motors SUVs — conveys solid strength and enhances the sense of wideness with the bumper styled to express its protective function.

Exterior
Styling is sportier and more dynamic. Less space between the cabin and bed integrates their forms more clearly. The L200’s J-line is further refined to give the Double Cab a unied look.
Side view
The new design more stylishly fuses the cabin and bed. The side glass sweeps further upward. Reduced space between the cabin and bed creates a greater sense of integrity, further enhanced by the side character line.

Point
The top-class agile drivability and quick steering gear ratio
enable the driver to manoeuvre the vehicle regardless of body size.
Good manoeuvrability
Agile handling
The J-line allows the wheelbase to be shortened without
sacricing cabin space, thus achieving top-class driving agility.
The lock-to-lock steering ratio is improved, requiring only
3.8 turns from lock to lock (vs. the current 4.3 turns). Since
less steering is necessary, even on sharp curves, less
burden is placed on the driver.
The new vehicle has a telescopic steering function as
well as the tilt steering function of the current vehicle. The
driving position can be adjusted for ease of driving even
by drivers with a large frame.
You can shift up or down quickly without moving your
hands from the steering wheel. This makes driving
more enjoyable.

The newly developed diesel engine features greatly improved fuel consumption due to a low compression
ratio that raises combustion efficiency. The vehicle is the world’s first pickup truck with an aluminium
engine*, which reduces the total weight by about 30 kg. This weight reduction reduces fuel consumption
and improves dynamic performance.

New 6-speed manual transmission
New 5AT and paddle shifter
The MIVEC system is employed to adjust engine intake air volume by changing the lift of the intake valve. The 2.4-litre diesel engine has dynamic performance beyond a 2.5-litre diesel engine.
A small turbine on the turbocharger greatly improves response. The torque from the low rotation area was increased to achieve greater acceleration performance than in conventional diesel engines.
Auto Stop & Go (AS&G) reduces fuel consumption and CO
2
emissions by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, such as when waiting at trafc lights. The engine restarts immediately when your foot presses the clutch pedal (in neutral).
A 6-speed MT with a wider gear ratio was newly developed. By combining the MT with a new 2.4-litre diesel engine, class-leading fuel efciency was achieved (in EU mode).
A new 5AT with optimum shift patterns supports high torque, improved fuel consumption and greater silence. The vehicle also features a paddle shifter for quick shifting up and down. You can shift the transmission without removing your hands from the steering wheel.

Honing the proven Pajero technology, Super Select 4WD-Ⅱ offers reliable off-road performance as well as the unique
ability to run in 2WD or full-time 4WD, on or off the road.
Super Select 4WD-Ⅱ with centre differential
Easy Select 4WD
Mitsubishi Motors Super Select 4WD-Ⅱ can switch between four modes, including full-time 4WD. In particular, the full-
time 4WD mode can absorb differences in rotation between the front and rear wheels. This mode provides excellent
cornering performance and running stability not only off-road, but also during everyday driving.
The lightweight, compact 4WD system has no centre differential. The economical 2WD
mode can be used at most times and switched to the 4WD mode when necessary. For the
new L200, the drive mode selector dial provides lower gear ratios for improved performance
in the 4L mode.
Using the drive mode selector dial, you can switch between 2WD (2H), and 4WD (4H, 4HLc) with shift-on-the-fly convenience at up to 100km/h. When the going gets rough, lock the centre differential by entering the 4HLc setting for rugged terrain or the 4LLc setting for inclines, mud and snow.

Point
Durability in severe environments is greatly improved through a tougher body.
Evolved tough body structure
The L200 is used in severe environments throughout the world. To further improve its reliability, overall durability is
greatly improved. The tough body withstands hard use even in mines.
Improved coupling rigidity around the engine room
The frame around the engine housing is now coupled within a closed cross-section of enhanced body rigidity.

Previous model
Tough cargo bed
Reinforcing materials in the side gate posts contribute to high rigidity, low vibration and a strong cargo bed.
Dispersion of input from the road
A structure is incorporated to mitigate shocks by effectively dispersing vibrations from the body mounts
Application of high-tensile materials
Strengthened steel material (high-tensile steel) is effectively applied to the body structure. The strengthened structure is further streamlined to reduce the weight to about 14 kg below that of the current vehicle.
Increased use of anti-rust steel plates
Anti-rust steel plates are applied to the hood, doors, cargo bed and various other parts. To improve anti-rust performance, a sealer and undercoating are applied to the floor, doors, cargo bed plate joints and inside the wheel arches.
Double hood striker
The radius of the main striker is increased to improve durability. In addition, a double structure formed by installing a sub striker improves safety by preventing the hood from accidentally opening or closing.
Coupled cargo bed and chassis frame
Rigidity is improved by adding cross member to couple cross sills under cargo bed and chassis frame.

Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE)
Safety equipment
The highly efcient energy absorbing chassis frame and highly rigid framework are combined to effectively absorb and
disperse shock from any direction. This helps protect passengers in a collision.

7 SRS airbags
Pretensioners
Shock absorbing structures are installed around the
hood and bumpers to minimise damage to the head
or chest of a pedestrian in case of a collision.
Driver’s and front passenger’s SRS airbags, front
SRS side and curtain airbags, and a driver’s seat
SRS knee airbag are included as standard features
on all models except some club cabs (Inform/Invite).
A double pretensioner (driver’s seat only) or single
pretensioner (front passenger) tightens the seatbelt in
the event of a frontal collision. A force limiter reduces the
load on the occupant’s chest.

Driver support
Sales
Point
The vehicle is packed with functions to prevent skidding, enhance control and support safe driving. These functions also give the driver greater peace of mind.
ABS prevents the vehicle from steering off course by preventing the wheels from locking and skidding if the brakes are suddenly applied. EBD secures braking even when there are many passengers or heavy cargo in the vehicle. This vehicle features both systems for reliable braking performance even when carrying heavy cargo or driving on a rough road.

Active Stability Traction Control (ASTC)
ASTC combines ASC for stable handling and ATC for starting performance — a combination inherited from Pajero. Active Stability Control (ASC) suppresses unstable vehicle movement and wheel skidding when driving on slippery roads or making sudden turns. Active Traction Control (ATC) brakes spinning wheels and optimally controls engine output if traction is lost when pulling away on snowy or wet roads or when ascending a steep slope.

[Wheel spinning] The spinning wheel is braked to prevent driving force from being wasted.
[Rear wheel skidding] Applying more braking force to the outer front wheel is sufficient to return the vehicle to its original line.
[
Front wheel skidding
] Applying more braking force, mainly to the inner rear wheel, is sufcient to return the vehicle to its original line.
TSA appropriately controls the vehicle’s engine and braking to keep both the trailer and vehicle stable.
A camera mounted in the upper part of the windshield detects the lane ahead. If the vehicle starts deviating from the lane at 65km/h or higher speeds, a warning light or alarm is triggered.
You can activate the Speed Limiter to prevent the vehicle from exceeding the speed you select. It will automatically activate a warning display and alarm and reduce engine output to prevent speeding and enhance driving safety.
Note that the speed limit may be exceeded when driving downhill.
When starting on a steep slope, HSA helps prevent you from rolling backwards while you release the brake by maintaining the braking force for up to two seconds until the accelerator is applied.
