The Evolving “Sport Utility Truck”
Developer’s message
Koichi Namiki
1
Since being launched in 1978, Mitsubishi pickups have been widely appreciated by customers all over the world. The new 5th generation L200 will inherit the DNA of its predecessors and further advance its concept.
Recently the usage of pickup trucks has been expanding and customers’ preferences have been diversifying. It’s no exaggeration to say that these trends were pioneered by the L200. From the previous generation, we initiated the concept of a “Sport Utility Truck (SUT)” that is suitable for private and family use in addition to commercial use, its prime duty. The goal with the new L200 is to evolve this original Mitsubishi concept and provide the “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck” that gives customers even greater driving pleasure and pride of ownership.
Its key features are:
- An innovative design reminiscent of a lean, athletic body with no excess bulk.
- High performance, quietness and better fuel efciency provided by a new all-aluminum “MIVEC” diesel engine incorporating state-of-the-art technologies.
- Driving ease unlikely for a large body size, whether driving on highways or narrow streets, thanks to the well thought-out chassis and suspension design.
- A surprisingly comfortable cabin like a passenger car’s with an enlarged interior space, ride comfort, quietness, dual zone air conditioner and more.
- Improved reliability and durability, demonstrated especially in harsh environments, due to optimized body structures based on Mitsubishi’s wealth of experience in road conditions all over the world.
- High safety performance that protects all passengers, provided by the high-rigidity RISE body and ASTC vehicle stability system.
We are condent the new L200 will satisfy not only pickup lovers, but also sedan and SUV users. I would be thankful if you would make the effort to communicate the charm of the new L200 to as many customers as possible.
Market trends for mid-class pickup trucks
Pickup truck demand has only slightly increased over the years and developing countries are forecasted to account for 60% (currently 50%) of the pickup truck market by 2016.
The market share for the L200 is around 10%. Competitors are expected to make full model changes in the highly active market.

History of L200 model
In recent years, there has been considerable diversication in what customers look for in pickup trucks. Starting from the 4th-generation, the L200 has embodied the Sport Utility Truck concept, which combines the comfort of a passenger car with the functionality and reliability of a pickup to meet consumers’ diversifying needs. Use of the distinctive “J-line” to connect the double cab and cargo bed contributes to a generously roomy interior space and agile driving performance. While maintaining the concept of the previous model, the all-new 5th-generation L200 has evolved to become a more rened, stylish pickup truck.

Horizontal line
Upward-sloping line
The Double Cab variant, which does not often carry a heavy load, retains the distinctive “J-line” separating the cab and cargo bed. It looks stylish from the side and features a horizontal line along the cargo bed.
The tail of the cargo bed in the Club Cab variants has been lifted so that its line becomes neatly horizontal when loaded.
The distinctive and innovative face — the new look of Mitsubishi Motors SUVs — conveys solid strength and enhances the sense of wideness with the bumper styled to express its protective function.

Exterior
Styling is sportier and more dynamic. Less space between the cabin and bed integrates their forms more clearly. The L200’s J-line is further refined to give the Double Cab a unied look.
Side view
The new design more stylishly fuses the cabin and bed. The side glass sweeps further upward. Reduced space between the cabin and bed creates a greater sense of integrity, further enhanced by the side character line.
