SWITCH ON SAFELY
Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
ROAD SAFETY COMES FIRST
Obey all local laws. Always keep your hands free to operate the vehicle while driving. Your first consideration while driving should be road safety.
INTERFERENCE
All wireless devices may be susceptible to interference, which could affect performance.
SWITCH OFF IN HOSPITALS
Follow any restrictions. Switch the phone off near medical equipment.
SWITCH OFF IN AIRCRAFT
Follow any restrictions. Wireless devices can cause interference in aircraft.
SWITCH OFF WHEN REFUELING
Do not use the phone at a refueling point. Do not use near fuel or chemicals.
SWITCH OFF NEAR BLASTING
Follow any restrictions. Do not use the phone where blasting is in progress.
USE SENSIBLY
Use only in the normal position as explained in the product documentation. Do not touch the antenna unnecessarily.

EMERGENCY CALLS
Ensure the phone is switched on and in service. Press the end key as many times as needed to clear the display and return to the start screen. Enter the emergency number, then press the call key. Give your location. Do not end the call until given permission to do so.
About your device
The wireless device described in this guide is approved for use on the CDMA 800 network. Contact your service provider for more information about networks.
When using the features in this phone, obey all laws and respect privacy and legitimate rights of others.
Warning: To use any features in this phone, other than the alarm clock, the phone must be switched on. Do not switch the phone on when wireless phone use may cause interference or danger.
Network services
To use the phone you must have service from a wireless service provider. Many of the features in this device depend on features in the wireless network to function. These network services may not be available on all networks or you may have to make specific arrangements with your service provider before you can utilize network services. Your service provider may need to give you additional instructions for their use and explain what charges will apply. Some networks may have limitations that affect how you can use network services. For instance, some networks may not support all language-dependent characters and services. See "Network feature settings," p. 34.
Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not activated in your device. If so, they will not appear in your device menu. Your device may also have been specially configured. This configuration may include

Open the fold
To use the phone, you must open the fold. Do not try to open the fold more than the hinge allows.
To close the fold, push from the top part of the device, not from the hinge.

The start screen
The start screen is home base and indicates your phone is in the standby mode.
Signal strength (1)—A higher bar indicates a stronger network signal.
Menu (2)—Press the left selection key to view menus.
Battery level (3)—A higher bar indicates more power in the battery.
Right selection key (4)—Press to access menu shortcuts. See "My menu settings,"
p. 36.
Quick keys
In the standby mode, use the quick keys as follows:
• Scroll up to access the call register.
• Scroll down to access the contacts list.
• Scroll left to write a text message.
• Scroll right to access the month view. See "Calendar,"40.
• Press the call key to access a list of previously dialed numbers.
• Briefly press the end key to access a list of profiles. See "Profiles," p. 30.
Indicators and icons
Depending on your wireless service provider and the model number of your device, some or all of the following indicators and icons may appear in the standby mode.

Device menus
Device features are grouped according to function and are accessed through the main menus. Each main menu contains submenus and lists from which you can select or view items and customize device features. Use the scroll method to access these menus and submenus.
Scroll method
1. Select Menu in the standby mode.
2. Scroll up or down to the menu you want, and select it.
3. If the menu contains submenus, scroll to the menu you want, and select it.
Press the end key to exit a main menu or submenu.
Shortcuts
The menus, submenus, and setting options are numbered. These numbers are called shortcuts.

In the standby mode, select Menu; then, within 3 seconds, press the numbered keys associated with the menu function to view or activate it. Repeat for submenus.

The antenna
Your device has a fixed antenna located towards the top of the phone with the fold closed. Hold the phone with the antenna area pointed up and over your shoulder.
As with any other radio transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the device is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed. Avoiding contact with the antenna area when operating the phone optimizes the antenna performance and the battery life.
UIM card slot
Your phone has a UIM (SIM) card slot built into the mechanics. However, the UIM is not functional in this phone model. Avoid placing anything into the UIM card slot.
Insert the battery
Note: Always switch off the power and disconnect the charger and any
other device before removing the cover. Avoid touching electronic components while changing the cover. Always store and use the device with the cover attached.
Always use original Nokia batteries. See Battery information, 43.

Set up your device
Slide the back cover off to remove it (1).
Insert the battery so that the gold-colored connectors on the battery align with the connectors on the device (2).
Replace the back cover: align the catches (3) together, and slide the cover (4) forward.
Charge the battery
1. Plug the charger transformer into a standard ac outlet.
2. Open the rubber cover located at the top of the phone. Connect the charger plug into the connector in the device.
The battery indicator bar starts scrolling. When the battery is fully charged, the bar stops scrolling.

3. Disconnect the charger from the device and the ac outlet.
Switch on or off
Warning: Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is
prohibited, or when it may cause interference or danger.
The on-off function for this device is combined with the end key. To switch the device on or off, press and hold the end key. When you switch off the device, the profiles list is displayed before the device switches off.
When you switch the device on, it may request a lock code. Enter the code and select OK. The preset lock code is 1234. For information about device codes, see Security settings, 33.
Make a call
Use the keypad
• Open the device, and enter the phone number, including the area code.
To delete a character to the left of the cursor, select Clear.
• Press the call key. Press the volume keys to adjust the volume during the call.
• Press the end key, or close the fold to end the call or to cancel the call attempt.
Use the contacts list
To enter a number into the contacts list, in the standby mode, select Menu >
Contacts, and enter the name and phone number. See Contact list options, 27.
In the standby mode, scroll down to find the name or number you want. Press the call key to call the number.
Redialing a number
To redial one of the last 20 phone numbers that you have called, press the call key, scroll to the desired name or number, and press the call key again.
1-touch dialing
1-touch dialing must be switched on before you can use it. To switch it on, select
Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialing > On.

Set up your device
You can set keys 2–9 as 1-touch dialing keys. After you assign a number to a key, press and hold the key in standby mode to make a call, or press the number and the call key.
Assign a number to a key
1. Select Menu > Contacts > 1-touch dialing > Edit.
2. Scroll to the desired key, and select Ass ign. If a phone number is already assigned, select Options to view, change, or delete the assignment.
3. Select Assign to SMS for text messaging or Assig n to cal l for voice calls.
Answer calls
Answer a call
Open the fold and press the call key . If you do not press the call key, the call goes to your voice mailbox. To reject a call without answering it, open the fold and quickly close it, or press the end key.
Adjust the volume during a call
To increase or decrease the volume during a call, press the top or bottom of the volume key. When adjusting the volume, a bar chart indicates the volume level.
Loudspeaker
Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is
in use because the volume may be extremely loud.
• To activate the loudspeaker during a call, select Loudspeaker and close the fold.
• To deactivate the loudspeaker during a call, open the fold and select Handset.
The loudspeaker is deactivated when a call (or call attempt) ends or when certain enhancements are connected.
Options during a call
Select Options during a call to access in-call functions. Many of these are network services. Check with your wireless service provider for more information.
