1.1 Important information
For safety reasons, the driver must not make entries whilst driving. The
instructions issued by the navigation system are recommendations. The
road traffic regulations must be observed in all cases.
Thermally insulated glass or windscreens with metallic coating reduce the
GPS reception a lot. Usually this type of coating is omitted at a special place
behind which the navigation unit can be fitted. If that is not the case, a
commercially available GPS aerial has to be fitted outside, e.g. on the roof
of the vehicle.
1.2 Installing the navigation software
If your device and/or your memory card have not been altered since you bought it, you only
need to switch the unit on in order to carry out the software installation. Make sure that the
memory card with the navigation software is in the unit when you switch it on. For the
correct and careful insertion of the memory card, take note of the instructions in the manual.
Once the unit has been switched on, the installation of the navigation software will be
carried out automatically.
Note
Please take note that a valid GPS signal must be received and the time
zone needs to be set after the installation of the software, so that the
correct arrival time can be calculated in future route calculations.
1.2.1 Re-installing the navigation software
After a hard reset or if the battery of your unit has been without charge for a
prolonged period, it is necessary to re-install the navigation software on your unit.
a) Make sure that the installation files are on the memory card. If your memory card
does not contain any files, you have to transfer the installation files onto the
memory card as described in section 1.2.2.
b) Insert the memory card into the navigation unit.
c) Start the unit. The navigation software will now be installed automatically.
d) After the re-installation you can select whether to adopt the previous settings (e.g.
last destinations, favourites) that are still present on your unit.
Page 6
- 6 -
1.2.2 Transferring the installation files
You can transfer the navigation software again onto your memory card and then
install the software on the navigation system. To do that, proceed as follows:
Via ActiveSync
®
a) Connect the navigation system with your PC via ActiveSync®.
b) Insert the memory card into the navigation system.
c) You can use ActiveSync
®
to access the files of the navigation system via the
menu item “Search”.
d) Now use Windows Explorer to select the “Installation” directory on this CD.
e) Then open the subdirectory for your choice of languages (e.g. “DE_FR_IT” for
German/French/Italian).
f) Copy all files from this folder into the main directory on your storage card.
g) Please check whether the directory “MapRegions” is included on your storage
card or whether it contains map data. If necessary, you may have to recreate the
directory and then transfer the required map data from the respective CD.
Via card reader
If your computer has a facility for writing directly onto the storage card, you can
also proceed as follows:
a) Use Windows Explorer to select the “Installation” directory on this CD.
b) Then open the subdirectory for your choice of languages (e.g. “DE_FR_IT” for
German/French/Italian).
c) Now copy all files from this folder into the main directory on your storage card.
This method takes less time than the synchronisation via ActiveSync
®
.
Note
Please note that some of the devices do not include memory cards in the
delivery. In these units the installation and map files have already been
loaded. The installation will run automatically.
Page 7
1.3 Installing the navigation maps
a) Copy the file with the ending “.map” from the “MapRegions” directory on the CD
onto your storage card into the “MapRegions” directory.
b) If your computer has a facility for writing directly onto the storage card, you can
copy the required file directly onto the storage card. This method takes less time
than the synchronisation via ActiveSync®. For further details please refer to the
instruction manual for your device.
c) Depending on the size of the storage card, you can transfer several files with
map material onto your storage card.
d) If only one file can be found in the “MapRegions” directory, the navigation
software will select that map material by default. If the “MapRegions” directory
contains several files, you will be asked at the start of the navigation software to
select the map material of your choice.
Note
If you have an installation version of the navigation software on a storage
card with 256MB, it can happen that very large map files do not fit onto
the storage card. For this reason you should delete the installation files
from your storage card after the installation of the navigation software and
only then copy the map file into the “MapRegions” directory.

1.4 Settings for the unit
After switching the unit on, you can either configure your unit under “Settings” or start the
navigation software via “Navigation”.
The following settings can be adjusted on your unit:
1.4.1 Calibrating display
In this settings template you can re-calibrate the touch screen when this does
not react accurately to the touch. For calibration, a cross appears in the middle
of the screen. After pressing this cross it will move on across the screen. Keep
pressing the cross until it is back in the centre of the screen. By pressing the
touch screen again, the calibrated setting will be adopted. If you do not confirm
the calibration, the view will be quit after a pre-selected period without changes.
1.4.2 Setup brightness
This can be used to adjust the brightness of the screen.
1.4.3 Power management
In order to save electricity, you can use this input template to select periods for
mains and battery operation, after which the unit will switch off.
1.4.4 Volume
Use this to adjust the sound volume of your unit (e.g.: key clicks).
1.4.5 Energy status
In this view you can see the charging status of the battery of your unit and also
whether charging is in progress.

2.1.1 Enter address
Use the keyboard to enter your destination address. Often you don’t have to enter more
than a part of the address, although as a minimum you should enter 4 characters per word.
The navigation software will complete the address automatically when searching for the
destination. If there are several options, you can select the required address easily from a
list. If the place you are looking for does not appear on the list, you may have to enter more
detailed information for the address.
2.1.2 Search category
You can use the search category to determine the type of destination. By default, the
program will search for the road/street of the entered address. But you can also select a
different category and search for special places such as hotels, airports or petrol stations in
a certain town.
2.1.3 Favourites
This is a list containing those destinations you have saved and that you require more
frequently.
2.1.4 Last locations
The last used destination locations are saved in chronological sequence and can be
reactivated as destination using this option.
Note
Using the function “Stored locations” in the main menu you can rename or
delete your personal favourites and also delete the location you last went
to or all last locations.
Page 12

2.2.2 Add location to favourites
You can choose this option in the detailed information in order to save the displayed
location in the favourites.
2.2.3 Show location
You can use this option to have the location displayed in the map beforehand.
2.2.4 Calculating the route
Once you have checked the destination details and selected the route options according to
your preferences, you can start the route calculation. The calculation can only be done
when the unit works without any faults. Faults are identified as follows:
The GPS reception is faulty. Your current location can therefore not be
determined.
2.3 Route planning
You can use this option to plan your route beforehand (e.g. on the night before you go on a
holiday trip) by entering the required start and destination position without turning the GPS
receiver on.
After planning the route you can call up the planned route in the main
menu using the function “start guide to destination”. For this purpose, the
GPS receiver needs to receive a signal.
Page 14

Current traffic information can be received via the TMC module, which will then be
displayed on the map with a corresponding traffic symbol.
A warning symbol on the map as well as an acoustic warning will alert you to the nearest
traffic hold-ups on your route that affect your travelling time. You can get to the traffic
warning view by activating the warning symbol (see 2.4.8).
If the traffic hold-ups are not along the precalculated route, the symbols are shown in grey.
After calculating the route, the display changes automatically to map view. Via the menu
item “Options” you can change the navigation menu, which offers the following options.
2.4.2 Turn icons
The arrow view contains the following information:

2.4.3 Directions
The description of the route tells you what roads to take in order to reach your destination.
In addition, border crossings into other countries are marked. The route description is only
available once you have calculated a route.
2.4.4 Compass
In the compass you can read the speed, the current longitude and latitude as well as the
GPS reception quality (HDOP value). The direction of travel is displayed reliably from a
speed of approximately 3 mph. In addition, after a GPS signal has been received once the
GPS time will be displayed in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
2.4.5 Save current position
You can use this function to save your current position as favourite. However this will only
work if you receive a GPS signal with your navigation device.
2.4.6 Go to …
During a route guidance session or after planning a route, you can use this to change to an
overview of your route, to the destination area or back to your current location. When
planning a route, the location is the starting point you have entered.
2.4.7 Area search
You will be offered special places near your current location for your selection. For the
identified places, the device will also display the distance as the crow flies.
Note
At first, the navigation software will search within a smaller radius. If this
does not yield any results, the search is extended to a larger radius. This
may cause a time delay in certain circumstances.
Page 17
- 17 -
2.4.8 Traffic Situation
You can use this function to have current traffic information displayed in a list. This will
show first the traffic reports affecting your route (sorted by distance) and then the events
not situated along your route (in alphabetical order).
If you select an entry in the list, the detailed view for that traffic
report will open. The traffic warning view will only open in the
case of the nearest traffic hold-ups affecting your route (i.e.
tail-backs, slow-moving traffic or road blocks).
In the traffic warning view you will be shown the distance to the
traffic hold-up affecting your route and the likely delay in
travelling time and you will be given the option to ask for an
alternative route to be calculated.
If you don't want to ask for a calculation of an alternative route
you can decline and the warning symbol will disappear from
the map.
If you want to ask for an alternative route to be calculated, the
navigation software will calculate a route which tries to bypass
the traffic hold-up.
If it is not possible to calculate an alternative route, the warning
will disappear from the map, but you can select the traffic holdup affecting your route once again in the list view and then ask
again for an alternative route to be calculated in the traffic
warning view.

2.5 Settings
It is possible to configure the navigation software individually using a number of setting
options.
You have the following options for the display:
2.5.1 Display
The map is displayed in north orientation or in the direction of
travel, depending on the scale of the map (2D-map view).
The map always turns according to the direction of travel
(2D-map view).
The map is displayed in north orientation
(2D-map view).
The 3D map is always displayed in the direction of travel. The
zoom function remains active in the 3D map, but it is no longer
possible to move the map.
Display of the map view with daylight optimised design.
Display of the map view with darkness optimised design.
The design of the map is adjusted to daylight or darkness,
depending on the time of day.
During the manoeuvre the map changes automatically into
arrow view. After the manoeuvre the display changes back to
map view.
Map view remains on display also during a manoeuvre. A
small version of the manoeuvre arrow appears on the map.
2.5.2 Volume control
Use this to adjust the sound volume of the acoustic instructions issued by the navigation
software. Adjust the system volume in the settings of the device under “Settings” or
“Einstellungen”.

2.5.3 Time zone
Use this menu to adjust the time zone you are in. The default setting is Central European
Time. The change to summertime is performed automatically.
Note
Please note that if you enter a different time zone, you have to adjust the
time zone manually.
2.5.4 Keyboard selection
Here you can choose between the standard keyboard and the telephone keypad.
2.5.5 Language
If your navigation device has several languages installed, you can use this to select
another language. After the selection, the device reboots and uses the language selected
by you.
2.5.6 TMC-Transmitter
Here you can search for a TMC transmitter. If you have tuned to a radio station and have
activated automatic search and the quality of the reception deteriorates, the unit will search
for a new transmitter in order to resume receiving TMC data. If you search manually and
the reception quality deteriorates, you cannot receive any more TMC data and have to tune
into a new radio station manually.
If there are events along your route that affect your travelling time (traffic hold-ups affecting
your route), a warning symbol on the map will point out the next event. It is possible to
deactivate this warning in the setting options for TMC transmitters.
2.5.7 Info
This contains information about the software and map versions.
2.5.8 Map selection
If you have installed more than one map area on your memory card, you can select an
area here.
