Bulletin No: 01-030/02 Last Issued: 12/20/2002
Subject:PROGRAMMABLE PARAMETERS RESET FOR GEM/CTM
MODULES, ABS MODULE, OR PCM AFTER MODULE REPLACEMENT OR RE-PROGRAMMING WITH WDS OR NGS APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS 1998 to 2002 Truck (All Models) DESCRIPTION
The GEM / CTM modules, ABS module and the PCM need to know accurate programmable parameters. Programmable parameters include: tire size, wheel diameter, axle size, axle ratio, and revolutions per mile (Rev/ Mile), and ABS type. This information is used by the modules to compute accuratevehicle speed. Additionally the modules need to know which ABS system the vehicle was built with (RWABS or 4WABS).
It is important to update the programmable parameters whenever the GEM / CTM modules, ABS module or PCM is replaced and whenever tire size, wheel diameter, axle size or axle ratio is changed. You should also confirm correct programmable parameters after performing module programming andre-programming.
If programmable parameters are not programmed, you may end up with DTC's that are difficult to diagnose or module communication errors. If theprogrammable parameters are incorrect, the vehicle systems will not operate as designed.
PCM replacement is done differently based on model year. Some vehicles require a Programmable Module Installation procedure (PMI). Other vehiclesrequire "Parameter Reset" procedure. The table identifies which years each procedure applies to. ABBREVIATIONS
Programmable Parameters = This data includes tire size, wheel diameter, axle size (7.5" or 8.8"), axle ratio, revs/mile, and ABS type. This information isprogrammed into the vehicle after build to make sure the correct options are programmed for diagnostics as well as the all vehicle speed related data. This assures that all control modules will recognize the correct vehicle speed.

GEM* = Generic Electronic Module. The GEM holds programmable parameters on vehicles with power equipment (power door locks, power windows, power mirrors, 4X4 etc.) from 1998 to 2000. CTM* = Central Timer Module. The CTM holds programmable parameters one vehicles without power equipment from 1998 to 2000.
PCM* = Powertrain Control Module. The PCM holds "Backup" programmable parameters for all trucks manufactured from 2001 on.
ABS = The Anti-lock Braking System module holds its own programmable parameters for ABS system operation. There are 2-types of ABS: 4WABS =4-Wheel Anti-lock Braking System and RWABS = Rear Wheel Anti-lock Braking System. * = As of 2001 all vehicles regardless of power equipment, have a GEM and all programmable parameters are stored in the PCM.

Shorts occur between the power (positive) and ground (negative) sides of a circuit. Therefore, finding a short circuit requires determining how the circuitis routed.

General Module: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Operation MODULE CONFIGURATION PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Some modules must be programmed as part of the repair procedure If this procedure is not followed the module will not function correctly and may set anumber of DTCs, including B2477 or P1639, which indicate that some necessary data has not been programmed into the module.
Modules that need programming should not be exchanged between vehicles. In most cases the parameter values or settings are unique to that vehicle, andif not set correctly will cause concerns or faults. Some programmable parameters, such as belt minder on/off, can be changed from the factory setting at the customer's request.
WDS will automatically attempt to retrieve the module configuration information from all modules, and from a backup location in the powertrain controlmodule (PCM) when vehicle ID is carried out. If the module and the PCM do not contain correct information the WDS or equivalent Tester will eitherrequest "As Built" data or display a list of items that you will need to manually configure. The WDS or equivalent Tester will program the module basedon the data you enter. There are three different methods that are used for module programming:
- programmable module installation (PMI)
- calibration update
- programmable parameters Some modules do not support all three methods.
Programmable Module Installation (PMI)
The programmable module installation (PMI) method is used when a new programmable module is installed on the vehicle. It is no longer necessary tocommand the WDS or equivalent Tester to gather module option content from the old module. The WDS or equivalent Tester automatically obtains anyavailable module option content information from the old module during the vehicle ID routine that runs when the WDS or equivalent Tester is initiallyconnected to the vehicle. It is important that you connect WDS to the vehicle and allow it to identify the vehicle and obtain configuration data prior toremoving any modules.
Calibration Update
Calibration update is used to install a new calibration and strategy into a module. The updates are usually issued to fix a concern in the module softwareand would normally be addressed by a technical service bulletin (TSB). This method has been used by the PCM for several years. Other modules will beadopting this strategy as well.
Programmable Parameters
This method is used to configure parameters that can be modified in service. These are typically at the preference of the customer. Not all featurescontrolled by the module are listed in this configuration method. Refer to the Module Configuration Index for a list of features by system.
If a module that has been modified using programmable parameters needs to be installed, the PMI procedure will maintain the parameters in their alteredstate if WDS is able to communicate with the old module during Vehicle ID. Otherwise you may need to use programmable parameters to return them tothe altered state.
Vehicle Identification (VID) Block
Some PCMs contain a memory area called a vehicle identification (VI D) block. The VID block is used to store backup data for each programmablemodule, as well as, powertrain configuration information.
Page 87
> Relays and Modules > Relays and Modules - Accessories and Optional Equipment > General Module > Component Information > Testing and Inspection > Initial Inspection
and Diagnostic Overview > Page 56
B3000 DS Regular Cab 2WD V6-3.0L OHV (2002)
If the WDS or equivalent Tester cannot retrieve module option content information from the suspect module, the WDS or equivalent Tester will attemptto extract backup information from the PCM's VID block.
The PCM VID block contains the factory settings for the configurable modules unless the PCM is flashed with a new calibration, in which case somePCM parameters may be modified.
As-Built Data Center
The As-Built Data Center maintains a record of the vehicle configuration in a database. The vehicle's VIN is required to obtain this information. TheAs-Built Data Center records the applicable module configurations stored in each module before the vehicle leaves the factory. The As-Built Data Centerwill always reflect the original build of the vehicle as it left the factory. Only contact the As-Built Data Center when directed to do so by the WDS or

equivalent Tester.
Inspection and Verification
1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. Refer to the following:
-Visual Inspection Chart
Wiring harness
- Connectors
Configurable Modules
The vehicle contains the following modules that are configurable:-
ABS (optional)
- Generic electronic (GEM) module
- Central security module

3. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:-
check that the program card is correctly installed.
- check the connections to the vehicle.
- check the ignition switch position.
4. If diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.5. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
Page 94
- CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Section 418-00.
- NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for GEM, go to Pinpoint Test A.
-
SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-testdiagnostics for the GEM.
6. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the GEM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.7. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the appropriate section to continue diagnostics.
