DLP Video Projector
VP-10S1
VP-10S1 3-chip DLP video projector
For the videophile who accepts nothing but the best, Marantz is proud to introduce the VP-10S1. This is
the world’s first 3 chip 16:9 video projector based on Texas Instruments’ DLP technology that is
designed specifically for home theater. For the discriminating audience, the Marantz VP-10S1 doesn’t
just raise the bar in video reproduction. It moves into a new area altogether, and needs to be
experienced to be believed.

A new era of video enjoyment
The VP-10S1 is a video projector based on Texas Instruments’
HD2 16:9 technology in a 3-chip arrangement. It offers up to
1200 ANSI lumens of brightness for the ability to light up very
large screens. The black level of the VP-10S1 is extraordinary,
with a contrast ratio of over 3600:1 for black level that rivals
CRT. The VP-10S1 uses Marantz’ exclusive ORCA filter for
unparalleled color accuracy and the complete Faroudja FLI2200
series chipsets for state of the art video processing using the
legendary DCDi deinterlacing system. Finally, the optics are
custom ground and coated glass from Minolta including a
special exclusive coating on the combining prism for complete
control over light scatter.
Three DMD HD chip system
With the VP-12 series, Marantz for three years has defined the
state of the art in front projection. With pictures that good, it
was hard to imagine what could be done to improve on things.
Well, as good as the VP-12 is, a single chip design has certain
limitations which are virtually impossible to overcome. By using
a separate DMD device for each color, we have improved on
several important areas, notably, low noise, color saturation
and accuracy, motion artifacts and smoothness, brightness and
contrast ratio.
Amazing colors
In a single chip projector, a filter in a color wheel is used for
splitting the light source into the three primary colors, Red,
Green, and Blue. Filters are very inefficient, throwing away
much of the available light. In the VP-10S1 extremely accurate
prisms are used in a two pass method to separate the light into
the primary colors. This assures very wide spectrum colors to
illuminate the individual panels. In addition Marantz' ORCA
filter is used just after the bulb, color correcting the light to
create a flat wide spectrum in which to work from. The result?
At virtually any level, no matter how complex the scene, the
VP-10S1 delivers extremely accurate and vivid colors, using the
ATSC colorspace as a reference. In short, this might be the most
color accurate video device ever created.
Silky smooth motion
In a single chip system, since no two colors are ever projected
on the screen at any given moment, that fact might be seen
during motion sequences. The VP-10S1, because of its
advanced 3-chip design, has motion as smooth as the
filmmaker intended. This can also be extremely important
during sporting events. In addition, since each chip has the full
frame (1/60 second) to deliver an image instead of 1/3 of a
frame (1/180 second), there are less motion artifacts as well.
Phenomenal brightness and efficiency
In a color wheel system, much of the available light from the
bulb is reflected off of the color wheel and is never recovered.
Since there is no color wheel in the VP-10S1, all of the available
light is delivered through the lens. This means that the VP-10S1
is exceptionally bright, measuring 1200 ANSI lumens. This
projector is bright enough to yield SMPTE recommended
brightness levels on screens up to about 200” diagonal. In
addition this level of brightness allows viewing in higher
ambient lighting conditions. But even though this projector puts
out an amazing amount of light, it runs cool, due to its die cast
aluminum chassis and complex ductwork for ventilation. Even
though there is over 250 watts of heat to eliminate, the fans run
virtually silent.
Velvety blacks
The VP-10S1, due to all of its optical advancements, has a
contrast ratio of over 3600:1! This is unheard of in the world of
3 chip digital projection, and may be the single most important
“spec” of all. Because it is this number that describes how deep
the blacks will be, and it is this black level that gives an image
its “punch”. Furthermore, for smaller screens (110-140), the
lamp can be put into economy mode, which will lower the
absolute black level even more. The result is rich vibrant
images that have a dimensionality previously impossible in
solid state projection.
