GENERAL INFORMATION
Definition of Terms
Angle
Recorded onto some DVD discs are scenes which have been simultaneously shot from a number of different angles (the same scene is shot from the front, from the left side, from the right side, etc.). With such discs, the ANGLE button can be used to view the scene from different angles.
Chapter Number
These numbers are recorded on DVD discs. A title is subdivided into many sections, each of which is numbered, and specific parts of video presentations can be searched quickly using these numbers.
DVD
This refers to a high-density optical disc on which high-quality pictures and sound have been recorded by means of digital signals. Incorporating a new video compression technology (MPEG II) and high-density recording technology, DVD enables esthetically pleasing full-motion video to be recorded over long period of time (for instance, a whole movie can be recorded). DVD has a structure consisting of two 0.6 mm thin discs which are adhered to each other. Since the thinner the disc, the higher the density at which the information can be recorded,a DVD disc has a greater capacity than a single 1.2mm thick disc. Since the two thin discs are adhered to each other, there is the potential to achieve double-sided play sometime in the future for even longer duration play.
Linear PCM Sound
Linear PCM is a signal recording format used for audio CDs. The sound on audio CDs is recorded at 44.1kHz with 16 bits. (On DVD discs, sound is recorded at between 48kHz with16 bits and 96kHz with 24 bits.)
Playback Control (PBC)
This is recorded on a video CD (version 2.0). The scenes or information to be viewed (or listened to) can be selected interactively with the TV monitor by looking at the menu shown on the TV monitor.
Subtitles
These are the printed lines appearing at the bottom of the screen which translate or transcribe the dialogue. They are recorded on DVD discs.
Time Number
This indicates the play time which has elapsed from the start of a disc or a title. It can be used to find a specific scene quickly. (It may not work with some discs.)
Title Number
These numbers are recorded on DVD discs. When a disc contains two or more movies, these movies are numbered as title 1, title 2, ect.
Track Number
These numbers are assigned to the tracks which are recorded on video CDs and audio CDs.They enable specific tracks to be located quickly.
Video CD(VCD)
This contains recordings of pictures and sound whose quality is on a par with that of videotape. This player also supports video CDs with playback control (version 2.0).
On Screen Display (OSD)
OSD screens for showing the disc information or player information and providing access to many major functions of this unit.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Disc Handling and Maintenance
Handling Precautions
To hold the disc by the edges so the surface will not be soiled with fingerprints.
( A )
Fingerprints, dirt and scratches can cause skipping and distortion.
Do not write on the label side with a ball-point pen or other writing utensils.
Do not use record clearing sprays, benzine, thinner, static electricity prevention
liquids or any other solvent.
Be careful not to drop or bend the disc.
Do not install more than 1 disc on the disc tray.
Do not try to close the disc tray when the disc is not installed properly. ( B )
Be sure to store the disc in its exclusive case when not in use. Then store
upright.
Do not stick paper or adhesive labels to the disc.
If the Surface is Soiled ( C )
Wipe gently with a soft, damp (water only) cloth. When wiping discs, always move the cloth from the centre hold toward the outer edge. (If you wipe the discs using a circular motion, circular scratches are likely to occur, which will cause noise.)
If the playing surface of a disc is soiled or scratched, the player may decide that the disc is incompatible and eject the disc tray, or it may fail to play the disc correctly. Wipe any soiling off the playing surface with a soft cloth.
If the Disc is Brought from a Cold to a Warm Environment, Moisture may form on the disc
Wipe this moisture off with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth before using the disc.
Improper Disc Storage
You can damage discs if you store them in the following places:
Areas exposed to direct sunlight
Humid or dusty areas
Areas directly exposed to a heat outlet or heating appliance
Maintenance
Be sure to turn the unit off and disconnect the AC power cord before maintaining the unit.
Wipe this unit with a dry soft cloth.
If the surfaces are extremely dirty, wipe clean with a cloth which has been dipped in a weak soap-and-water solution and
wrung out thoroughly and then wipe again with a dry cloth.
Never use alcohol, benzine, thinner, cleaning fluid or other chemicals. And do not use compressed air to remove dust.

GENERAL INFORMATION
POSITIONING THE SPEAKERS POSITIONING THE SPEAKERS
Avoid positioning the speakers in corners, as this will boost too much the bass tones.
Placing the speaker behind curtains, furniture etc. will reduce the treble response, thus reducing the stereo effect considerably. The listener should still be able to see the speaker.
Each room has different acoustic characteristics and positioning possibilities are often limited. You can find the best position for your speakers by experimenting. In general, the speakers should be arranged as symmetrically as possible.
Positioning the FRONT speakers
The front speakers should be placed in frant of the listener, left speaker to the left and right speaker to the right. This can be checked with the balance control on the main unit.
The best height for the front speaker is where the high frequency speakers ( tweeters ) are at ear height ( while seated ).
Positioning the CENTER speaker
The center speaker should be placed centrally between the front speakers, e.g. underneath or on top of the TV.
The best height for the center speaker is at the height of your ears (while seated).
Positioning the SURROUND speaker
The surround speaker should be placed behind the listener, left speaker to the left and right speaker to the right.
The surround speakers face the listener is recommended.
Positioning the SUBWOOFER speaker
Place the subwoofer to the left or right of the television as seen from the front of television.

SOUND MODE
Dolby Digital (AC-3) mode 3 STEREO
Dolby Digital is the official term for the AC-3 mode, and it is a system developed by Dolby Laboratories to transmit the 5-plus-1-channel digital signals altogether.
Whereas Dolby Pro Logic is an analog matrix system, Dolby Digital (AC-3) employs digital discrete system in which each channel is treated as a separate entity. It is used for the DVDs which are a new-generation AV media, and it represents the new format which supports not only laser discs but also the advance which will be made in AV components of the future.
This mode is used to enjoy digital source, such as music sources or movie software.
1. Turn the power on and select the input source of OPTICAL or COAXIAL.
2. Press the Source up/down button and DIGITAL indicator will turn on and Dolby Digital triangle indicator will flash.
Dolby Surround mode
Use this feature when playing Dolby Surround-encoded movies and music (especially laser discs, video cassettes and TV broadcasts). Most currently released video cassettes and laser discs, DVDs and many TV broadcasts are encoded with Dolby Surround.
1. Once the system is on, select the input source.
Use this feature when you wish to play movies and music without using the surround speakers.
The sound that would normally by routed to the surround
speakers is combined with the front channel sound and routed to the front left and right speakers.
1. Turn the power on and select the input source.
2. Press the SURR. MODE button on the front panel on the
remote repeatedly to select 3 Stereo mode and 3 STE-
REO will appear in the display
NOTES:
After making the initial speaker balance adjustments using the TEST TONE , it may be necessary to change the Center or Surround level slightly using actual program material.
Keep in mind that the Center channel may provide most of the sound during some portions of the program, particularly when the program material consists of dialog only.
It is normal for the Surround speakers to provide little or no sound during some portions of a program. The sound delivered to the Surround speakers depends on the program material, and many programs the surround information is limited.
2. Press the Source up/down button repeatedly to cyclically select the Dolby Surround mode and SURROUND will appear in the display.
Phantom mode
Choose this mode when a center channel speaker is not used.
The sound occurring at the center of the screen is routed
equally from the front left and right channel speakers. This creates the illusion that the sound is coming from the center.
1.Once the system is on, select the input source.
2. Select the appropriate center channel mode by pressing the SURR. MODE button on the front panel or SURR. button on the remote repeatedly to select Phantom mode and PHANTOM will appear in the display.

Night Mode
Night mode (DR COMP) is a function for compressing the dynamic range (reproduction level range) of audio signals. It is used to review movie software late at night or at other times when high volume levels are not desirable.
At preset scenes in movies software which has been recorded in the Dolby Digital (AC-3) format, this function prevents sudden increases in the sound level by holding down the peak level while maintaining the spread of the sound field.
This night mode can only be used on the following conditions;
•When the reproduction mode is set to Dolby Digital ( Dolby Digital LED lights).
•When the source has been recorded in the Dolby Digital (AC-3) format (the DIGITAL LED lights),and the night mode can be effected only when the source is recorded for the night mode.
