Series RPV
Residential Purge, Drain and Balance Valve
IS-RPV
Installation Instructions
When first filling the hydronics system or when re fill ing it af ter
per form ing main te nance, you must re move all air from the pip ing and the ra di a tion el e ments to fill them with water. Air
trapped in the sys tem can pre vent prop er cir cu la tion of water
and cause noisy op er a tion.
The Watts Residential Purge and Balance Valve (RPV) (Fig. 1)
should be in stalled on the return pip ing of a hydronics heat ing
cir cuit (see back) be fore it joins the re turn main. If the system
comprises mul ti ple zones, each zone should be fitted with the
RPV.
Purging the Hydronics System
1. Isolate all circuits by shutting the isolation or zone valves and
the RPV’s shutoff valves.
2. Starting with one circuit, attach a hose to the purge port of
the RPV shown in (Fig. 2). (Note: a hose must be run into a
suitable floor drain or run to the out side to ac com mo date
purged water.)
3. Open the RPV’s purge port by turning the brass screw
turn, and open the zone valve (Fig.3).
4. Then open the make up water or boiler fill valve’s fastfill feature. Al low wa ter to flow through the RPV’s purge
port un til the water runs clear and free of air bubbles.

Balancing the Hydronics System
When you have filled the entire system with wa ter, you can
open the bal anc ing valve for each cir cuit and ad just it to pro vide
optimum sys tem comfort.

This valve is designed to be soft soldered into lines without dis as sem bly, using a low temperature solder (420°F). Other sol ders such
as 95/5 tin antimony (460°F) or 96/4 tin silver (430°F) can be used.
However extreme caution must be used to prevent seal dam age.
Higher temperature solders will dam age the seat ma te ri al. ANSI
B16.18 states that the max i mum operating pres sure of 50-50
solder connections is 200psi at 100°F and de creas es with
higher temperatures.
Apply heat with the flame directed AWAY from the center of the
valve body. Excessive heat can harm the seats. After sol der ing,
the packing nut may have to be tightened.
