4029 LaserPrinter Models
The IBM* LaserPrinter 4029 Series are letter-quality page printers designed to
attach to IBM or IBM-compatible personal computers using a standard parallel or
serial interface. These printers are capable of various pitches and fonts, as well as
bit image graphics that allow the user to print advanced graphics.
There are eight models of the IBM 4029 LaserPrinter:

Notes:
1. The 4029 printers listed as "preconfigured" contain a built-in AppleTalk
network option or Postscript option, as well as additional memory.
2. Certain features and functions are not available for the 4029-010 These
include the optional 500-sheet paper tray, the front exit sensor (the 4029-010
has no front exit), and the paper tray auto-size function. These differences
are noted throughout this manual.
3. The 4029-010 has its Own user's guide and other customer documentation,
but all 4029 models have a common
manual.
4. The maximum duty cycle for 4019 and 4029 printers is 20K pages per month.
The average usage is 1K pages per month for printers rated at up to 6 pages
per minute, and 2K pages per month for printers rated at 10 pages per
minute.
5. Some models of the IBM 4019 and 4029 LaserPrinter are manufactured by
Lexmark** International, Inc. rather than IBM. These models, which may be
built for specific customer operations, are identified by a unique machine type
or model number in the lower right corner of the front cover. Most models use
existing parts. All system boards have the FRU number on them.

Hardware Maintenance and Service
Self-test
When you turn on the LaserPrinter a power-on self-test (POST) is performed.
Check for successful completion of the POST by observing the following:
1. All lights come On for approximately 1 second, then:
The panel briefly displays 5 Self test.
2. The fuser lamp comes on, then:
The panel displays Ready and the selected emulation mode, and the
Ready and Paper Source lights come On.
3. The printer briefly remains idle while the fuser warms up to operating temperature.
4. The drive motor, fan motor, and print head motor run for a brief period. The
drive motor runs for 10 seconds; the fan motor runs for 3 seconds at high
speed then switches to low speed; the print head motor runs for about 30
seconds.

If the printer completes all these steps and no error messages are displayed, the
POST has successfully completed and the printer is ready to receive data.
