Thischapterpresentsfollowingsafetyinformationthatyouneedtobefamiliarwithbeforeyouservicea ThinkPadproduct.

Generalsafety

Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsafety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaofthemachinesduringandaftermaintenance.
•Whenliftinganyheavyobject:
1.Makesurethatyoucanstandsafelywithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightoftheobjectequallybetweenyourfeet.
3.Useaslowliftingforce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolift.
4.Liftbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainfromthe musclesinyourback.Donotattempttoliftanyobjectthatweighsmorethan16kg(35lb)orthat
youthinkistooheavyforyou.
•Donotperformanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsafe.
•Beforeyoustartthemachine,makesurethatotherservicetechniciansandthecustomersarenotin ahazardousposition.
•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasafeplace,awayfromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayfromwalkareassothatotherpeopledonottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsofamachine.Makesurethatyour sleevesarefastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Ifyourhairislong,fastenit.
•Inserttheendsofyournecktieorscarfinsideclothingorfastenitwithanonconductiveclip,about8 centimeters(3inches)fromtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-frameeyeglasses,ormetalfastenersforyourclothing.
Attention:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsafetyglasseswhenyouarehammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Afterservice,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceanysafetydevice thatiswornordefective.
•Reinstallotherpartsthatyouhaveremoved.

Observethefollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.

•Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasoftmaterial thatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.
•Manycustomershave,neartheirequipment,rubberoormatsthatcontainsmallconductivebersto decreaseelectrostaticdischarges.Donotusethistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Findtheroomemergencypower-offswitch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ifanelectrical accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchordisconnectthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbefore: –Performingamechanicalinspection –Workingnearpowersupplies –Removingorinstallingmainunits
•Beforeyoustarttoworkonthemachine,disconnectthepowercord.Ifyoucannotunplugit,poweroff thewallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachine,andlockthewallboxintheoffposition.
•Ifyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions: –Ensurethatanotherperson,familiarwiththepower-offcontrols,isnearyou.
Attention:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchoffthepower,ifnecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Attention:Anelectricalshockcanoccuronlywhenthereisacompletecircuit.Byobservingtheabove rule,youmaypreventacurrentfrompassingthroughyourbody.
–Whenusingtesters,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesfor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,ifnecessary)toinsulateyoufromgroundssuchas
metaloorstripsandmachineframes. Observethespecialsafetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;Instructionsforthese precautionsareinthesafetysectionsofmaintenanceinformation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuring highvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpoweredoff.
•Alwayslookcarefullyforpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesofthesehazardsaremoistoors, nongroundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andmissingsafetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereectivesurfaceofaplasticdentalmirror.Thesurfaceis conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicethefollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedfromtheirnormaloperating placesinamachine: –Powersupplyunits –Pumps –Motorgenerators –Similarunitslistedabove Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingoftheunits.
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs: –Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimyourself. –Switchoffpower. –Sendanotherpersontogetmedicalaid.

Safetyinspectionguide

Thepurposeofthisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentifyingpotentiallyunsafeconditions.Aseach machinewasdesignedandbuilt,requiredsafetyitemswereinstalledtoprotectusersandservicetechnicians frominjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.Y oushouldusegoodjudgmenttoidentifypotential safetyhazardsduetoattachmentofnon- ThinkPadfeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythisinspectionguide.
Ifanyunsafeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand whetheryoucancontinuewithoutrstcorrectingtheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesafetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal electricalshock)
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCathoderaytube(CRT)faceorabulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Todeterminewhetherthereareanypotentiallyunsafeconditions,usethefollowingchecklistatthebeginning ofeveryservicetask.Beginthecheckswiththepoweroffandthepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversfordamage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Turnoffthetablet.
3.Disconnectthepowersupplyofthebuilt-inbatterybypressingtheemergencyresetbuttoninsidethe emergencyresetholeusingastraightenedpaperclip.
4.Disconnectthepowercord.
5.Checkthepowercordforthefollowing:
a.Makesurethatathird-wiregroundconnectorisingoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethe
third-wiregroundcontinuity,andmakesurethatthecontinuitybetweentheexternalgroundpinand theframegroundis0.1ohmorless.
b.UseLenovoauthorizedpowercordonly.
c.Insulationisnotfrayedorworn.
6.RemovetheLCDmoduleassembly.
7.Checkforcrackedorbulgingbuilt-inbatteries.
8.Checkforanyobviousnon- ThinkPadalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetyofany non-ThinkPadalterations.
9.Checkinsidetheunitforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetallings,contamination,wateror otherliquids,orsignsofreorsmokedamage.
10.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
11.Checkthatthebuilt-inbatteryfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.

Handlingdevicesthataresensitivetoelectrostaticdischarge

Anycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadifferenceinchargebetweenobjects. ProtectagainstESDdamagebyequalizingthechargesothatthemachine,thepart,theworkmat,andthe personhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.

1.Useproduct-specicESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertied(ISO9000)asfullyeffective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeople.
•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeevenwhen youarewearingawriststrap.
•Useagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciallyusefulwhen handlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecic servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseofagroundingsystemtoguardagainstESDdamageisdesirablebutnotnecessary.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyframeground,groundbraid,orgreen-wireground.
–Whenworkingonadouble-insulatedorbattery-operatedsystem,useanESDcommongroundor
referencepoint.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.
–Usetheroundgroundprongoftheacplug.

Groundingrequirements

ElectricalgroundingofThinkPadproductisrequiredforoperatorsafetyandcorrectsystemfunction.Proper groundingoftheelectricaloutletcanbeveriedbyacertiedelectrician.

StrategyforreplacingFRUs

Beforereplacingparts:
UsethefollowingstrategytopreventunnecessaryexpenseforreplacingandservicingFRUs:
IfyouareinstructedtoreplaceaFRUbutthereplacementdoesnotcorrecttheproblem,reinstall theoriginalFRUbeforeyoucontinue.
•IfanadapteroradeviceconsistsofmorethanoneFRU,anyoftheFRUsmaybethecauseoftheerror. Beforereplacingtheadapterordevice,removetheFRUsonebyonetoseeifthesymptomschange. ReplaceonlytheFRUthatchangedthesymptoms.
Attention:Thesetupcongurationonthetabletyouareservicingmayhavebeencustomized.Running AutomaticCongurationmayalterthesettings.Notethecurrentcongurationsettings(usingtheView Congurationoption);then,whenservicehasbeencompleted,verifythatthosesettingsremainineffect.

ReplaceaFRUonlywithanotherFRUofthecorrectmodel.
WhenyoureplaceaFRU,makesurethatthemodelofthemachineandtheFRUpartnumberarecorrect byreferringtotheFRUpartslist.
AFRUshouldnotbereplacedbecauseofasingle,unreproduciblefailure.
Singlefailurecanoccurforavarietyofreasonsthathavenothingtodowithahardwaredefect,such ascosmicradiation,electrostaticdischarge,orsoftwareerrors.ConsiderreplacingaFRUonlywhen aproblemrecurs.IfyoususpectthataFRUisdefective,cleartheerrorlogandrunthetestagain.If theerrordoesnotrecur,donotreplacetheFRU.

Intermittentproblems

Intermittentsystemhangproblemscanbeduetovariouscausesthathavenothingtodowithahardware defect,suchascosmicradiation,electrostaticdischarge,orsoftwareerrors.FRUreplacementshouldbe consideredonlywhenaproblemrecurs.
Whenanalyzinganintermittentproblem,dothefollowing:
1.Runthediagnostictestforthesystemboardinloopmodeatleast10times.
2.Ifnoerrorisdetected,donotreplaceanyFRUs.
3.Ifanyerrorisdetected,replacetheFRUshownbytheFRUcode.Rerunthetesttoverifythatno moreerrorsexist.

Undeterminedproblems

Ifthediagnostictestsdidnotidentifythedevicethathasfailed,ifwrongdevicesareinstalled,orifthe systemsimplyisnotoperating,followtheseprocedurestoisolatethefailingFRU.
1.Verifythatallattacheddevicesaresupportedbythetablet.

2.Turnoffthetabletanddisconnecttheacpoweradapterandallcablesfromthetabletandthekeyboard dock.
3.Turnonthetablet.WhentheThinkPadlogoisdisplayed,pressF1continuouslytoenterThinkPadSetup.
4.SelectCongPower.ThePowersubmenuisdisplayed.
5.SelectDisableBuilt-inBattery.
6.ClickYesintheSetupWarningwindow,thenthetabletturnsoffautomatically.Waitthreetove minutestoletthetabletcool.

RemovingtheSIMcard

IfthetabletyouareservicinghasaSIMcardinstalled,removetheSIMcardbeforeyoustarttheservicing.
