Chapter1.Introduction

ThankyoufororderingandusingtheThinkServer®RemoteManagementModule,hereinafterreferredto astheRemoteManagementModule.
TheUserGuidedescribeshowtousetheRemoteManagementModule,theoverviewofthemodulefeatures andhowtosetupandoperatethemodule.
TheUserGuideisforsystemadministratorsresponsibleforinstallation,troubleshooting,upgradeand maintenanceoftheRemoteManagementModule.Asasystemadministrator,onceyouarefamiliarwith theGuideyoucanuseRemoteManagementModuletoaccessremotelyfromanylocationtorespondfor emergency.

Poweron/off:ThepowerbuttoncannotcutoffsystempowerorRemoteManagementModulepower. TocutoffthepowerofRemoteManagementModule,youmustdisconnecttheACpowercordfromthe poweroutlet.Whenopeningthechassistoinstallorremovetheparts,youshouldmakesuretheAC powercordhasbeendisconnected.
Dangeroussituations,equipmentandcables:Power,telephonesandsignalcablesmayhavethe dangerofelectricshock.Beforeopeningthedevice,shutdowntheserver,disconnectedthepowercord, thecommunicationsystem,networkandmodemconnectedtotheserver.Otherwise,itmayresultin personalinjuryorequipmentdamage.
ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)andESDprotection:ElectrostaticDischarge(ESD)candamagedisk drivers,systemboardandothercomponents.Werecommendthatyoucompleteallthestepsinthis SectiononlyintheESDprotectiveworkstations.IfESDworkstationisunavailable,wearanti-staticwrist strapwhileholdingpartsandconnectthewriststraptothegroundwire(thatis,anyunpaintedmetal surface)oftheserverchassistoprovideESDprotection.

ESDandholdingsystemboards:Becarefulwhenholdingthesystemboard.Theyareextremely sensitivetoESD.Onlytouchtheedgewhenholdingthesystemboard.Laythesystemboardwith componentssidefacingupwardsaftertakingthesystemboardoutoftheprotectionbagorthesever. Usetheconductivefoampad(ifany)ratherthanthesystemboardpackage.Donotslidethesystem boardonanysurface.
Installingorremovingjumper:Jumperisasmallplasticconductorbetweentwojumperpins.Some jumpershaveasmallwingonthetopforyoutousengertipsorneneedleforcepstoclipit.Ifthe jumperhasnosuchwing,becarefulwheninstallingorremovingitwithneedleforceps,andclipthe jumper'snarrowfaceinsteadofthewideone.Clippingthewidefacewilldamagethecontactsinside thejumper,whichwillleadtointermittentfaultstosomefunctionscontrolledbythejumper.Clipthe jumpercarefullywithpliersorothertoolsanddonotsqueezewhenremovingit.Otherwise,pinsonthe systemboardmaybebentorbroken.

ThissectionbrieydescribesthefeaturesoftheRemoteManagementModule.
TheRemoteManagementModulerunsontheserversystemasanintegratedsolutionandintegrates theembeddedoperatingsystem.Independentoftheserveroperatingsystem,theembeddedoperating systemcanprovideawholesetofcomplete,stableandeffectivesolutionfortheserver.Asasystem administrator,youcanrespondanytimeandanywheretoemergencyfailureandtakeremotecontrolon theserverthroughthenetwork.

FeaturesofThinkServerRemoteManagementModule

ThinkServerRemoteManagementModuleiseasilyaccessiblebyremoteKVMandcontrollableviaLAN orInternet.Itwilldigitizeandcompressthecollectedvideosignal,keyboard,mousesignalsandthen sendtotheremoteconsole.Embeddedwithremoteaccessandrelatedcontrolsoftware,themodule alsoallowsintegratedremotepowermanagementviaIPMI.KeyfeaturesoftheRemoteManagement Moduleareasfollows:

ThischapterdescribeshowtousetheSetupUtilityprogramtoconguretheThinkServerRemote ManagementModulefromtheun-conguredstatustotherunningstatus.Whenyouinstallthemoduleinto yourserverforthersttime,themodulebydefaultwillsearchDHCPserveronthenetworktoautomatically assigntheIPaddress,subnetmask,andgateway.ItisrecommendedthatyoumanuallysetastaticIP addressintheSetupUtilityprogram.
TosetanIPaddress,dothefollowing:
1.Connecttheservertoaworkingelectricaloutletandturnontheserverbypressingthepowerbutton.
2.PressDelassoonasyouseethelogoscreen.TheSetupUtilityprogramopens.Ifyouhavesetan administratorpassword,youmusttypetheadministratorpasswordtoaccessthefullSetupUtility programmenu.WhenworkingwiththeSetupUtilityprogram,youmustusethekeyboard.Thekeys usedtoperformvarioustasksaredisplayedatthebottomofeachscreen.
3.Fromthemainmenu,selectAdvancedIPMI2.0CongurationSetLANCongurationSetup LANConguration.RefertoT able1“SetupLANCongurationsubitems”onpage5forinformation aboutthesubitems.
4.FromtheIPAddressSourceoption,youcanchooseST A TICorDHCPtosettheIPaddress.Itis recommendedthatyoumanuallysetastaticIPaddress.
5.Whenyounishtheconguration,selectSaveLANCongurationtosavethesettings.

Prestart

TheRemoteManagementModulehasanembeddedWebserverandanapplicationwithmultiplestandard interfaces.Thissectiondescribestheseinterfacesandtheirusages.Y oucanusetheTCP/IPprotocolto accesstheseinterfaces.
Note:Asthesupportedfunctionsoftheproductvarywithcongurations,refertotheactualproduct description.
Formoreinformationabouttheinitialsettings,seeChapter3“ConguringtheThinkServerRemote ManagementModule”onpage5 andpasswordsarealsoaccepted.Thedefaultusernameandpasswordareasfollows:

TheRemoteManagementModuleisaccessiblethroughthestandardJava HTTPandHTTPS.

Step1.InputtheIPaddressassignedbytheThinkServerRemoteManagementModuleintotheWeb
browser.

BrowserwillthenbedirectedtotheloginpageofRemoteManagementModule.
Step2.Entertheusernameandpassword.

Chapter5.Remoteconsole(KVM)operation

Theremoteconsoleistheredirectionscreen,keyboardandmouseoftheremotehostsystem(the ThinkServerRemoteManagementModulehasbeeninstalledonit).Ifthereisaneedtousetheremote consoleofthemanagedhostsystem,makesurethattheserverhasJava*runtimeenvironmentplug-in.
Whentheremoteconsoleisstarted,anewwindowwillbeopened,showingthescreenofthehostsystem. Operatingtheremoteconsoleisjustlikeanadministratorissittingonfrontofthescreenoftheremote system.Thismeansthattheusercanusethekeyboardandmouseasheusuallydoes.
Note:PayattentionthatifthehostoperationsystemisWindows2003,setthedisplayresolutionunder 1280*1024(excluding).

Startredirectionconsole

Theremoteconsoleistheredirectionkeyboard,videoandmouseoftheremotehostsystem(theThinkServer RemoteManagementModulehasbeeninstalledonit).
Step1.ClickConsoleRedirectioninthispagetostarttheredirectionwindowforremoteconsoleKVM.
Step2.ByclickingJavaConsole,youcanstarttheredirectionconsoleandcarryoutremotemanagement
forserver.
Step3.Apop-upwindowwillbeshownandbegintodownloadJavanetworkbootprotocolJviewer.jnlp
documentafteryouclickJavaConsole.Andthen,theJavaapplicationsfortheimplementof remoteconsolewillbedownloaded.
Notes:
•BeforetheJNLPdocumentisbooted,JavaRuntimeEnvironment(JRE)V6.0Update13or higherversionmustbesetupontheclient.
•Theclientbrowsermustallowshowingthepop-upwindowsfromtheIPaddressofThinkServer RemoteManagementModule.
ThisremoteconsolewindowisaJavaAppletforcreatingtheTCPconnectionstotheThinkServer RemoteManagementModule.TheprotocolovertheseconnectionsisauniqueKVMprotocol, ratherthanHTTPorHTTPS.ThisprotocoldedicatedportforKVMis#7578,port#5120forCD-ROM CD-ROMmediaredirectionandport#5123foroppy/USBmediaredirection.Y ourlocalnetwork environmentmustallowcreatingtheseconnections.Thatistosay,ifyouhaveaprivateintranet, thesetupsofrewallandNetworkAddressT ranslation(NA T)mustbeconguredaccordingly.

Mainwindow

Whentheremoteconsoleisstarted,themainwindowofremoteconsolewillappear.
Theremoteconsoleshowsthescreenoftheremoteserver.Operatingtheremoteconsoleisjustlikeyouare infrontoftheremoteserver.Theresponsespeedmaybealittledelay,dependingonthebandwidthand delaybetweentheThinkServerRemoteManagementModuleandtheremoteconsole.

Menubaroftheremoteconsole

Thereisamenubaronthetopoftheremoteconsolewindow.Youcanviewthestatusoftheremoteconsole andcongurethesetupforlocaleremoteconsolethroughtheitemsonthemenubar.

Thefollowingsectiondescribesthefeaturesofeachcontrol.

Videomenuoftheremoteconsole

ByclickingtheVideooptiononthecontrolbaroftheremoteconsole,youcanopenthevideomenuof remoteconsole.Withthismenu,youcantakethefollowingoperations:
StartRedirection:Resumetheredirectionsofkeyboard,videoandmouseaftersuspend.Theshortcut keyisAlt+S.
StopRedirection:Pausetheredirectionsofkeyboard,videoandmouse,andthentheremoteconsole windowwillpausethecurrentlyupdatingprocess.TheshortcutkeyisAlt+T .
Restart:Restarttheredirection.TheshortcutkeyisAlt+R.
FullScreen:Switchbetweenthewindowmodeandfullscreenoftheremoteconsole.
Exit:Closetheremoteconsole.

Keyboardmenuoftheremoteconsole

ByclickingKeyboard,youcanopenthekeyboardmenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Withthismenu, youcantakethefollowingoperations:
HoldCtrl/Alt/Windowskeys:Allowsimulatingtopressthesespecialkeysontheremotekeyboard.On thelocalkeyboard,thesespecialkeyswillbecarriedoutthroughlocaloperatingsystem,ratherthan transfertoremoteoperationsystem.
Alt+Ctrl+Del:IssueAlt+Ctrl+Delcommandtoremoteoperationsystem.
Note:WhentheremoteoperatingsystemisRedHat5.3andswitchbetweenthegraphicalinterfaceand textualinterfaceiscarriedout,selectHoldLeftCtrlKey+HoldLeftAltKeytoswitchinterface.Thisswitch canbefromgraphicalinterfacetotextualinterface,andthenbacktographicalinterface.However,this operationcanbedoneonlyonce.Ifthetextualinterfaceisdirectlyswitchedtographicalinterface,then onemoreswitchisnotallowed.Ifyouneedtotaketheaboveoperationsagain,youneedtocancelthe selectedmenuandthenselectagain.

Mousemenuoftheremoteconsole

ByclickingMouse,youcanopenthemousemenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Thereisaoptionin themousesub-menu:
SyncCursor:Thisoptionisusedforswitchingthecursorappearancesintheremoteconsolewindow.It willnothaveimpactonthecursorintheremotesystem.TheshortcutkeyisAlt+M.

Optionmenuoftheremoteconsole

ByclickingOptions,youcanopenthemenucontainingrelevanttaskoptions.Y oucanadjusttheVideo settingbasedonyourneeds.

Devicemenuoftheremoteconsole

ClickDevicetoopenthedevicemenuwhichincludesrelevanttaskoptions.Themenuoptionsallow startingorstoppingtheremotemediaredirection.
RedirectCDROM/RedirectISO:ThisallowsyoutoredirectthelocalCD-ROM/DVDDriversorISO imagesinthelesystemoflocalclienttovirtualCD-ROMdevicesintheremotesystems.
RedirectFloppy/USBKey/RedirectFloppy/USBKeyImage:Thisallowsyoutoredirectthelocal oppydriver,localUSBKeyDriverortheIMGlesforoppydisktothevirtualoppydevicesinthe remotesystem.

Thesevirtualdevicescanread,write(providingthepropertyisnotreadonly)andboot,whicharesimilarwith anyotherCD-ROMsoroppiesintheremotesystem.Butonlywhencertainmediaredirectionsareactive, thesevirtualdevicesareavailableintheremoteoperatingsystemorBIOSsettingmenu.Thesettingisvalid afterremotesystemresetoritispower-onorpower-off.Thesedeviceswillnotdisappearfromtheremote systemuntiltherelevantcheckboxesintheremoteconsolewindowarecleared.
Note:ThiskindofvirtualdevicesarenotlimitedtothenormalsizeofoppyorCD-ROM.Theycanbeas largeastheredirectingdevicesorles.Duringtheinstallationofremoteoperatingsystem(theoppydrivers mayberequired),theUSBKeyDriverscanberedirectedtothevirtualoppydevices(ratherthantheUSB devices)inordertoallowloadingthecustomdevicedrivers.

Statusbaroftheremoteconsole

Thestatusbaratthebottomoftheremoteconsoleisusedtoindicatethestatusoftheremoteconsole. Whenbrowsingthemenuoptions,thisstatusbarwillautomaticallyshowthedetailsofalloptions.
