USE OF THE OC TET COM PARA TOR

Mott

The Octet Comparator contains eight permanent
color standards. A test sample is inserted into the
openings in the top of the comparator. The sample
can then be compared to four color standards at
once, and the value read off the comparator. For
optimum color comparison, the comparator should
be positioned between the operator and a light
source, so that the light enters through the special
light-diffusing screen in the back of the comparator.
Avoid viewing the comparator against direct
sunlight or an irregularly lighted background.

PRO CE DURE

1. Fill test tube (0845) to line with Tri co n Flocculating Reagent (5941).

2. Use 0.5g spoon (0698) to add three level measures of soil. Cap and

gently mix by inverting the tube back and forth slowly for one
minute. Allow soil particles to settle.

NOTE: The amount of time required for a soil to settle varies with
texture; clay soils may require additional time, but in most instances
the solution will be clear in several minutes.

3. Add 9 drops of *Tri co n Soil pH Indicator (5937). Cap and invert the
test tube gently one time to mix the contents. Allow soil to settle.

4. Place test tube in the Tr ic o n pH Comparator (5936). Match sample
color to a color standard. Record as soil pH.
