Location
Using the unit in the following locations can result in a malfunction.

Power supply
Please connect the designated AC adaptor to an
AC outlet of the correct voltage. Do not connect
it to an AC outlet of voltage other than that for
which your unit is intended.
Interference with other electrical devices
This product contains a microcomputer. Radios
and televisions placed nearby may experience
reception interference. Operate this unit at a suitable distance from radios and televisions.

Handling
To avoid breakage, do not apply e xcessive force
to the switches or controls.
Care
If the exterior becomes dirty, wipe it with a clean,
dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners such as benzene or thinner, or cleaning compounds or flammable polishes.
Keep this manual
After reading this manual, please keep it for later
reference.
Keeping foreign matter out of your equipment
• Never set any container with liquid in it near
this equipment. If liquid gets into the equipment, it could cause a breakdown, fire, or electrical shock.
• Be careful not to let metal objects get into the
equipment. If something does slip into the
equipment, unplug the AC adaptor from the
wall outlet. Then contact your nearest Korg
dealer or the store where the equipment was
purchased.

Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the ToneWorks PANDORA PX3B personal bass multi-effect processor.
In order to enjoy your PANDORA PX3B, please read
this owner’s manual carefully and retain it f or future
reference.
Main features
The PANDORA PX3B is a highly versatile multi-
effect device in a compact pac kage. It mak es it easy
to use Korg's proprietary " " modeling technology to create detailed and powerful modeling
sounds.
39 types of effect variations
A maximum of seven effects can be used simultaneously.
50 user programs and 50 preset programs
IPE (Integrated Parameter Edit) system
Easy to adjust effect settings.
Auto Tuner function
This feature makes tuning fast and easy. You can
also tune without being heard (i.e., while muted).

Backlit LCD
The LCD screen can be easily viewed even in dark
locations.
Rhythm Trainer function
You can play 50 different rhythm patterns or a metronome.
AUX Effect function
Sound from a CD player or other audio source. connected to the AUX jack can be processed b y tr ansposing the key or canceling the low-frequency range
(bass cancel) which are useful features for practicing.
Phrase Trainer function
A segment of audio (maximum 16 seconds) recorded from a CD player or other audio source can be
looped for repeated playback. You can even slow
down the playback speed without aff ecting the pitch.
Bass Amp Simulator
Select the desired type of sound character from six
types of bass amp.
Equalizer mode
Adjust the gain for each equalizer band with the
value dial and five buttons for quick editing.
Equalizer Display
Indicates the gain of each equalizer band.
HBB (Hyper Bass Boost)
Boosts low frequency response.
V alue dial
This lets you rapidly select programs or edit the effects.
What is ?
(Resonant structure and Electronic circuit Modeling System)
is KORG’s proprietary sound modeling technology which precisely reproduces the complex character and nature of both acoustic
and electric instruments as well as electronic circuits in real world
environments. emulates a wide variety of sound generation characteristics including instrument bodies, speakers & cabi-
nets, acoustic fields, microphones, vacuum tubes, transistors, etc.
Turning on the power
Remove the battery cover located on the bottom of
the PANDORA PX3B by sliding it in the direction of
the arrow. Insert four AAA alkaline batteries (sold
separately) as shown in the illustration. Be careful
to insert the batteries using the correct polarity.
Battery Low display
When the battery begins to run down, the Low Battery icon will light. When this icon lights, replace
the batteries as soon as possible.
Programs and other data (except for the data being
edited) will not be lost even if the battery is removed
and changed.
Batteries that have run down must be removed
from the PANDORA PX3B. If you leave dead
batteries in the unit, malfunctions (battery leakage, etc.) may occur. You should also remove
the batteries when you do not expect to use
the PANDORA PX3B for an extended period
of time.
Batteries and an AC adapter are not included
with this product. They must be purchased separately.

PANDORA PX3B will be bypassed or muted.) This is also
used to turn the effects on/off
and to playback/pause the
Phrase Trainer.
C HBB (Hyper Bass Boost) button
This button turns the HBB

For all equipment being connected, turn the power
OFF and lower the volume.

standard mono cable to connect it to a bass amp
etc., only the L (left) output will be heard.

with a tape, etc. However the volume must be
adjusted on the connected device.
*4 Be sure to use only the specified AC adapter
(DC9V 300-500mA).
*5 PANDORA’s output level and sound quality will
vary depending on which headphones are used.
We recommend using good quality low impedance headphones, 32 Ohms or less with a sensitivity rating near 100dB/mW or above. Many
headphones sold for use with portable CD or
cassette players will work just fine.

Use the +/– buttons to select a program. Select a clean-type program that will be suitable
for setting the volume. (As an example here, we
will select Program 1 “M’ M”.)

Play mode
Play mode is the mode in which you will normally
use the PANDORA PX3B.
1. Selecting a program
You can select from a total of 100 programs : 50
user programs and 50 preset programs. Use the +/
– buttons to select a program.
Depending on the program, either or
will light above the program number.

Programs can also be selected in Rhythm Trainer
mode, AUX Effect mode, or Phrase Trainer mode.
2. Master level
When is lit, the master level is shown in the
value display.

Value display
Immediately after the power is turned on, you will
be able to adjust the master level using the Value
dial. You can also use the +/– buttons to adjust
the master level. (☞ p.22)
The master level is remembered even when the
power is turned off.
3. Bypass/Mute
When you press the BYPASS·TUNE button, the
P ANDORA PX3B will be bypassed, and the original
sound will not be processed by any effect.
The effect chain will blink, and the display will indicate “PASS” for approximately one second.

If you press and hold the BYPASS·TUNE button
for longer than one second, the output signal will
be muted.
The effect chain will blink rapidly, and the display
will indicate “MUTE” for approximately one second.

Bypass/mute will be turned off when you either press
the BYPASS·TUNE button once again, or change
the program.
4. Tuner
The tuner will operate when you bypass or mute in
Play mode.

Play a 12th fret harmonic on your bass. The LCD
will show the note name and the calibration. If the
pitch is more than a semitone higher than the note
name, a sharp symbol will appear at the upper left
of the note name.
The display area will act as a meter to show the
pitch.
Tune the string of your bass so that the indicator
above the center mark is lit.
The tuner (bypass/mute) will be turned off when you
press either the BYPASS·TUNE button or change
the program.
Calibration (frequency of the standard A=440 pitch)
You can use the Value dial to adjust calibration in
the range of A = 438 Hz–445 Hz.
The calibration setting you make will be valid until
the power is turned off. Once the power is turned
off, calibration will be reset to A = 440 Hz.

5. HBB (Hyper Bass Boost)
This function boosts the low-frequency range that
is often insufficient when using small headphones.
This function is also effective when the PANDRA
PX3B is connected to a bass amp or mixer.
Use the HBB button to switch HBB on/off. When
HBB is on, the HBB icon will light .
The HBB on/off setting is remembered even when
the power is turned off.

This cannot be switched on/off when the PX3B
is bypassed or muted.
If the EQ has been set to boost LOW and you
turn HBB on, the sound may be distorted. If this
occurs, lower the TRIM of the EQ.
6. Specifying the function of the Value Dial
You can specify the function that the V alue dial will
perform in Play mode.
In Play mode, hold down the EXIT button and press
either the EDIT √ button, the EDIT
the BYPASS·TUNE button to assign the following
functions.
This setting cannot be changed during bypass/
mute.
● Hold down the EXIT button and press the
EDIT √ button.
The LCD will indicate “M LEV” for approximately one second.
The Value dial will adjust the master level, and
the +/– buttons will select programs. You can
use the Value dial to adjust the master level
quickly.
Each time the power is turned on, this setting
will be in effect.

The +/– buttons will select programs, and other
buttons and the Value dial will not function (i.e .,
“key lock”). In this state, selecting programs is
the only operation you can perform, which can
help prevent inadvertent program changes during a live performance etc.

Equalizer mode
In this mode, the EQ display will indicate the gain of
each equalizer band as you adjust it, for easy editing.

If you wish to save the edited values, perform
the "9) WRITE" operation. If you turn off the
power or select another program without performing "9) WRITE," the program will return to
its original settings.

Rhythm Trainer mode
In Play mode (except during Mute/Bypass or Key
Lock), AUX Effect mode, or Phrase Trainer mode,
you can press the RHYTHM/AUX EFFECT button
once to enter Rhythm Trainer mode.
When you enter this mode, the selected rhythm will
start, and the Rhythm Trainer mode icon will blink.
This mode has the following three parameters.
the EDIT√ /® buttons to select a par ameter , and use
the value dial to set the value of each parameter.

AUX Effect mode
In this mode, the sound of a CD or other audio
source connected to the AUX jack can be pitch-shifted by using the Ke y Tr anspose (K-TRN), or the lowfrequency range can be eliminated by using the
Bass Cancel (B-CAN) function.
In Rhythm Trainer mode, press the RHYTHM/AUX
EFFECT button once to enter AUX Effect mode.
When you enter this mode, the AUX Effect icon will
blink.To return to Play mode, press the EXIT but-
ton.

The key transpose setting can be adjusted in the
range of +/–1 octave.
The key can be raised or lowered in 10 cent steps
for the first three semitones, and in semitone steps
(100 cents) thereafter.
When K-TRN or B-CAN is turned on, the output will be mono. If both K-TRN and B-CAN are
off, the output will be stereo.
When you enter this mode, the MOD (modulation) and D/R (delay/reverb)effects will automatically be turned off.
For some input sources (mono recordings, or
when special effects were used during recording), B-CAN may not produce the desired effect.
Phrase Trainer mode
In this mode, you can record a phrase from a CD or
other audio source connected to the AUX jack, and
loop it (play it back repeatedly). This provides a
convenient way to practice by playing along with
the repeating phrase.
You can slow down the pla yback speed without affecting the pitch, which can help you to learn difficult phrases.To return to Play mode, press the EXIT
button.Alternatively, you can press the RHYTHM/
AUX EFFECT button to enter Rhythm Trainer
mode.
When you enter this mode, the MOD (modulation), D/R (delay/reverb)and AUX effects will automatically be turned off.

Here you can select the recording mode (AUX S:
AUX high sound quality, AUX L: AUX long recording, BAS S: bass INPUT high sound quality, BAS
L: bass INPUT long recording).
For AUX S or BAS S, you can record up to 8 sec-
onds. F or AUX L or BAS L, you can record up to 16
seconds. Select the setting appropriate for the
phrase you wish to record.
• Value dial: Select the recording mode
• [ ] button: Begin recording
Start playback on your CD or other audio source,
and at the point where you wish to begin recording,
press the [ ] button. Recording will begin.
Once you record a phrase, it is not possible to
change the recording mode. If you wish to
change the recording mode, you must first exit
to another mode, and once then re-enter Phrase
Trainer mode.

2. Recording
When you press the [ ] button to begin recording,
the recording time will be shown as a numerical
value and in the value display.
When you wish to stop recording, press the [ ]
button or the [ ] button.
When recording ends, loop playback will begin automatically.
Unless you manually stop recording, recording will
continue as long as permitted for the selected recording mode. (8 or 16 seconds).
The phrase will be recorded and played back in
mono.

begin playback
3. Playback
The recording phrase will playback as a loop.
During playback or while paused, you can use the
+/– buttons to select programs.

Rotating the V alue dial tow ard the left will slow do wn
the playback speed without affecting the pitch.
The playback speed can be adjusted in 5% steps
over a range of 100%, 95%, 90%…25%.
During playback, you can press the [HOLD] button
to hold the sound at that moment (Hold function).

If you press the EXIT button or the RHYTHM/
AUX EFFECT button, the recorded phrase will

4. Pause
When you press the [ ] button, the playback will
pause. Press the [ ] button once again, and playback will resume.
Pressing the [ ] button while playback is paused
will return you to the beginning of the recorded
phrase.

To re-record the phrase, press the [ ] button to
pause the playback. While paused, the sound from
the device connected to the AUX and INPUT jack
will be output. Now set your input source to the beginning of the desired phrase.

[ ] button at the beginning of the desired phrase.

Edit mode

Here you can switch each effect on/off, select the
effect type, modify the parameter values, etc.
In Play mode, press the EDIT ® button to enter
Edit mode.

Use the EDIT √ /® buttons to select the effect that
you wish to edit.
Each time you press an EDIT √ /® buttons, you
will cycle through the effects in the order shown below. When an effect is selected, its icon will blink.

To turn an effect on, use the EDIT √ /® buttons to
select the effect, and press the BYPASS·TUNE
button. For details on eff ect types and their parameters, refer to the Effect Parameter List (☞ p.36).
1) DYNA (dynamics)
These are dynamics-type effects such as compressor, overdrive, and distortion, that are used mainly
to create the tone of the bass.
2. Editing each effect
For each effect, you can select the effect type and
set its parameter values. Effects that are turned off
cannot be edited.
