7/ Thermal Considerations

The KBox A-150-KBL is fanless and passively cooled using a heatsink plate or optional heatsink. The heatsink plate and optional heatsink absorb the heat produced by the internal components and transfers the heat away from the internal components by dissipating the heat into the ambient environment.
Hot Surface Heatsinks can get very hot. To avoid burns and personal Injury:
Do not touch the product’s heatsink when in operation
Allow the product to cool before handling
Wear protective gloves
Always turn the product off when not in use
Heatsink Plate 7.1.
When mounting in a DIN rail control cabinet take care not to obstruct the airflow over the heatsink plate, as this can stop sufficient heat dispersing into the ambient environment and cause a build-up of heat.
The heatsink plate dimensions are:
171 mm ( 6.7” ) x 105 mm (4.1” )
Heatsink (option) 7.2.
The heatsink is installed on top of the heatsink plate. It is possible to rotate the heatsink by 90° to enable the heatsink to remain in the vertical position to support vertical airflow within a DIN rail control cabinet. The DIN rail clamp can be installed directly on the top of the heatsink, see Figure 17.
Figure 17: Heatsink and Heatsink with DIN Rail Clamp
Heatsink
When mounting in a DIN rail control cabinet, take care not to obstruct the airflow over the heatsink. Obstructing the airflow can stop sufficient heat dispersing into the ambient environment and causes a build-up of heat.
The heatsink dimensions are:
130 mm (5.12”), 130 mm (5.12”), 19.2 mm (0.76”)
For additional heatsink mechanical information, see Chapter 10.3.1.1: Mechanical Diagrams Heatsink.

9/ Switching On

Before switching on, observe the instructions in Chapter 1/: General Safety Instructions for IT Equipment and the instructions within this chapter.

Switching On for the First Time 9.1.

Only connect to a power supply delivering a rated input voltage of +24 VDC and complying with the SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) requirements of the EN 61010-1 standard.
Observed that wiring and short-circuit/overcurrent protection is performed according to the applicable standards, regulations and in respect to the product’s electrical specification. The disconnecting device (fuse/circuit breaker) rating must be in accordance with the product wire cross-section.
Even when switched off using the power-on switch, parts of the system are still energized. The product is only completely switched off when the power has been switched off using the power-on switch and the power cable is disconnected from either the DC power supply or the DC Input power connector.
Following a proper cabling procedure prevents a false power-on condition, that could result in operational failure. When installing/disconnecting the product ensure that:
The functional earth connection is made first and disconnected last. The last connection made to the product is the power wiring.
The wires used for power connections must be clearly marked (+/-/functional earth) to ensure that the wires are connected to the DC input power connector and the DC power supply properly. Support I/O cables and power wiring to minimize strain on the connectors.
Before switching on the KBox A-150-KBL for the first time, wire the supplied DC mating power connector (PSC 1,5/3-F) to the DC power supply as described in , see Chapter 8.3: Wiring the DC Mating Power Connector.
To switch on for the first time, perform the following:
1.
Switch off the external DC power supply via a disconnecting device (fuse/circuit breaker), to ensure that no
power is flowing from the external DC power supply during the connection procedure.
2.
Connect the protective earth stud bolt to an appropriate common earth connection point. Connect the wired DC
mating power connector (PSC 1,5/3-F) to the DC Input power connector (Figure 3 and Figure 4, pos. 1). Pay
attention to the polarity of the connections (see Chapter 11.1.1: DC Input Power Connector).
3.

Power Specification 10.6.

The KBox A-150-KBL’s must be supplied with a nominal input voltage of 24 VDC from an external power supply that connects to the front panel DC input power connector using the supplied DC mating power connector (PSC 1,5/ 3-F) wired as described in Chapter 8.3: Wiring the DC Mating Power Connector.
Use an appropriate Power Supply Unit (PSU) that meets the product’s power specification and can supply the maximum required power consumption.
Table 12: Power Specification
Input Voltage (nominal) 24 VDC
Input Voltage (range) 9 VDC to 30 VDC
Input Current 4.4 A max.
Inrush Current 6 A max.
To protect the product against fluctuations and interruptions in the delivered DC power supply, observe proper power protection requirement.
Do not disconnect the power from the system while the system is switched on! Performing a forced shut down can lead to loss of data or other undesirable effects!

10.6.1. Power Protection Requirements

When deciding on an appropriate Power Supply (PSU) consider general power protection features that protect electrically powered products against fluctuations and interruptions in the delivered AC mains supply voltage.
Operation without loss of data or damage to the product must also be considered:
For critical applications requiring continuous operation, use an uninterruptible PSU to provide constant power
even during AC power loss.
To ensure an orderly shutdown without loss of data use a PSU with pre-longed operation during AC power loss
(approx. 5 min).
In user environments where power spikes are common, use a PSU with overvoltage protection to prevent power
spikes from damaging internal components and causing system failure.
Unintentional voltage drops in the electrical mains power supply that drop below the supported operating level
cause a power outage (brownout) that can damage the product and cause loss of data. Use a PSU with a sufficient holdup time to avoid brownout. PSUs with a longer holdup time allow for a longer power outage time without the power to the product dropping below the required operating level.
If there is an unintentional voltage drop in the electrical mains power supply for longer than
the PSU’s specified holdup time (brownout), then all supply voltages should be shut down and remain in the off state long enough to allow internal voltages to discharge sufficiently. Failure to observe this off state time means that parts of the product or attached peripherals may work incorrectly or suffer a reduction of MTBF.
The minimum off state time, to allow internal voltages to discharge, depends on the implemented PSU and additional electrical factors. To determine the required off state time, each case must be considered individually. For more information, contact Kontron Support
.

10.6.2. Power Consumption

The total power consumption depends on factors such as the capacity of the SBC, external interfaces and system expansion. Use an appropriate PSU that is able to supply the power required by all KBox A-150-KBL configured components.
Table 13: Power Consumption
Power Consumption
SBC (Burn-In) External Interfaces Total
100% RAM, 100% CPU, 100% Disk
15 W 22.6 W 37.6 W Power 39.5 W (37.6 W + 5%)
4x USB 3.0 1x HDMI 1x DP
The PSU must supply the power required by all KBox A-150-KBL configured components.

10.6.3. Protective Earth Stud Bolt

The protective earth stud bolt connects to the internal chassis GND. The protective earth stud bolt is located next to the DC Input Power connector at the bottom of the front panel when the external 2.5” HDD/SSD drive bay is included (Figure 3, pos. 2) and at the top of the front panel without an external drive bay (Figure 4, pos. 2).
