TheKongsbergMesotechFlexviewisacompact,versatilemultibeamsonar.
TheFlexviewisdesignedforsmallobservation-class ROVswherecompactsizeandlightweightarekey selectioncriteria.Flexibleandefcient,itissuitable forapplicationssuchassiteinspection,clearance, marineengineering,underwaterscience,environmental monitoring,orsearch-and-rescueassignments.
TheremovabletransducerontheFlexviewistherstofits kind,offeringeldreplacementofadamagedtransducer intheunlikelyeventofacatastrophicimpact.This innovativedesignalsoallowsfortransducercongurations tobeexchanged,dependingonthejobbeingperformed. Forexample,alow-frequencytransducercandetectobjectsatalongrange,whereasa high-frequencytransducerprovideshigh-resolutionimagesatshortrange.
Multibeamsonarshaveanarrayoftransducersthatsimultaneouslytransmitspings(sound pulses)ataspeciedfrequencytocoveralargeareainlesstimethanasingle-beam transducer.Togeneratedata,computersoftwareassignsacolourrangecorrespondingto theamountofsoundreectedoffatarget.Thedistancetothetargetisdeterminedbythe lengthoftimeittooktoreceivethetransmittedacousticpulse.
TheFlexviewprovideswide-anglefull-rangesituational awarenessandconcurrentultra-shortrangeimagingwith dynamicfocusing.
Bycombiningthehighrefreshrateofaconventional multibeamsonarwithanimagequalitycomparabletoa single-beamsonar,theFlexviewprovideshigh-resolution imagesthatareeasytointerpret.TheFlexviewhasa 140°eldofview,allowingyoutoseethefullunderwater pictureinreal-time.

Inthispublication,thecomputerisreferredtoastheSonarProcessor.TheSonarProcessor containstheoperationalsoftware,andofferstheuserinterfacethatallowsyoutocontrolthe Flexview.ItisavitalpartoftheFlexviewMultibeamsonar.
TheSonarProcessorrunstheFlexviewsoftwarethat managescommunicationwiththeSonarHead,performs allbeamformingandimageprocessingandpresentsthe sonarimagery .TheSonarProcessorcommunicateswith thesonarthroughastandardEthernetcable.
Ifyoupurchaseacomputerlocally,makesurethat thechosenmodelmeetsthefunctionalandtechnical requirements.Thecomputermustbedesignedforrugged use,andtheconstructionmustbeabletowithstandthe vibrationsandmovementsofavessel.

Powersupply

TheSonarHeadrequiresaDCpowersupplytorun.
Normally,theDCvoltageissuppliedinthelocationwheretheSonarHeadismounted,such asonaremotelyoperatedvehicle(ROV).Atestcableandpowersupplyisavailablefor orderasanaccessory.Thetestpowersupplyusesa24VDCswitchingpowersupply.

TheSonarHeadtransmitsandreceivesanacousticpulsewhendeployedunderwater.
TheremovabletransducerontheFlexviewistherstofitskind,offeringeldreplacement ofadamagedtransducerintheunlikelyeventofacatastrophicimpact.Thisinnovative designalsoallowsfortransducercongurationstobeexchanged,dependingonthejob beingperformed.TherearetransducerswithvaryingfrequenciesavailablefortheFlexview. The500kHzand950-1400kHztransducersareshownhere.

TheSonarHeadincludestransmitandreceivetransducersandtheelectronicstogenerate thetransmitpulseanddigitizethereceivedsignal.ThesonardataissenttotheSonar ProcessorusingastandardEthernetlink.
Caution
TheSonarHead’sblackpolyurethanetransducerisdelicate.Avoidimpactstothe transducerwheninstallingorhandlingtheFlexview.
Prolongedexposuretoultra-violetraysandexcessiveheatmaydamagethesurfaceof thepolyurethanetransducerface.AlwaysstoretheFlexviewintheprovidedequipment casewhennotinuse.IftheFlexviewismountedonanROV,coverthetransducerwhen notinuse.

AnycommercialdisplaycanbeusedwiththeFlexviewMultibeamsonar,providedthatthe displaymeetstheminimumrequirements.Thechosendisplaymustbedesignedformaritime use,anditmustmeettheminimumperformancespecications.Youmustalsomakesure thatthechosendisplaysupportsthevideoformatsprovidedbytheSonarProcessor.
Wesuggestthatyoupurchasealargehigh-resolutiondisplay.
KongsbergMesotechmayprovideasuitabledisplay.Consultyourlocaldealeroragentfor moreinformation.
UninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)
ItisimportanttoensurecontinuousoperationoftheFlexviewindependentofvarying qualityofthevessel'smainssupply.
Uninterruptiblepowersupplyunitsarenot

Generalsafetyrules

Thefollowingsafetyprecautionsmustbefollowedatalltimesduringinstallationand maintenancework:
WARNING
Thevoltagesusedtopowerthisequipmentarepotentiallylethal.Youmustnever workaloneonhigh-voltageequipment!
Youmustalwaysswitchoffallpowerbeforeinstallationormaintenanceworkonthe
Flexviewsystem.
Usethemaincircuitbreaker,andlabelthebreakerwithawarningsignthatinforms othersthatmaintenanceorinstallationworkisinprogressonthesystem.
Forsafetyreasons,twopersonsmustalwaysbepresentduringtroubleshootingwith
powerON.
Flexview
Readandunderstandtheapplicablerstaidinstructionsrelatedtoelectricshock.
Whenevermaintenanceisinprogress,itisessentialthatarstaidkitisavailable,and
thatallpersonnelarefamiliarwiththerstaidinstructionsforelectricalshock.

Observethegeneralrequirementsrelatedtothesupplypower.
Thesupplyvoltagetotheequipmentmustkeptwithin±10%oftheinstallation’snominal voltage.Maximumtransientvoltagevariationsonthemainswitchboard’sbus-barsarenot toexceed-15%to+20%ofthenominalvoltage(exceptunderfaultconditions).

Electromagneticcompatibilityinstallationguidelines

KongsbergMesotechLimitedequipmentandaccessoriesarecompliantwithapplicable electromagneticcompatibility(EMC)regulations.Thiscomplianceensureselectromagnetic interference(EMI)betweenthesystemcomponentsandotheron-boardequipmentis minimizedtoreducetheriskofperformancedegradationduetosuchinterference.Correct installationisrequiredtomaintainelectromagneticcompatibility.
EmploythefollowingrecommendationstoensurethebestEMCperformance:
UseonlyKongsberg-speciedcablesandcheckthatanyferritesuppressionlterstted
onthecablesareinstalledaspertheinstallationdrawings.Suppressionferritesare importantforminimizingelectromagneticinterference.Ifonehastoberemovedduring theinstallation,re-installthesuppressionlterinitsoriginalpositiononthecablebefore usingthesystem.
Useaferritesuppressionlterinstalledonanythird-party-suppliedcableendattachedto
Flexviewequipmentports.
Operateusingstandardlengthsysteminterconnectcablesunlesscuttingorcable
extensionsaredescribedintheinstallationmanual.
InstallFlexviewequipmentandinterconnectcablesasfollows:
–Atleast1meter(3.3feet)fromanyequipmenttransmittingradiosignals,antennasor
cablesconnectingtheradioequipmenttotheantennas.
–Atleast2meters(6.6feet)fromSSBradios,antennas,andcables.

20degreesaboveandbelowtheplanecontainingtheradiatingelement.
ProtecttheFlexviewwithasuitablyratedfuseorcircuitbreaker.Thepowersupply
shouldbeadequatelylteredtominimizeequipmentexposuretohigh-voltagetransients thatmayoccurduringenginestartorwhenotherhigh-powerequipmentisusedonboard ofthevessel.

ToolsandequipmentrequiredforFlexview installation

Allnecessarytools,instrumentsandconsumablesmustbereadyathandpriorto commencingFlexviewinstallation.
Youmustbeequippedwithastandardsetoftools.Thistoolsetmustcomprisethenormal toolsforelectronicandelectromechanicaltasks.Thisincludesdifferentscrewdrivertypes, pliers,spanners,acablestripper,asolderingiron,etc.Eachtoolmustbeprovidedinvarious sizes.W erecommendthatalltoolsaredemagnetizedtoprotectyourequipment.
SpecictoolsandconsumablesyouwillneedfortheFlexviewinstallationareincludedin thesuppliedaccessorykit.
ThefollowingtoolsanditemsarerequiredfortheFlexviewinstallationandarenotincluded inthestandarddelivery.Y oumustpurchasetheseitemslocally.
Youwillneedanohmmetertoverifyelectricalconnectionsandforcontinuitytesting.

InstallingtheSonarProcessor
TheSonarProcessoristhecomputerthatcontrolstheFlexviewsystem.Itisavitalpartof theFlexviewMultibeamsonar.
Prerequisites
Asuitablelocationforthecomputermustbedenedpriortoinstallation.Thiscomputeris intendedtobeinstalledinsideinanareasuitableforextendedhumanhabitation.Choose apositiontottheavailablecablelengthsbetweenthecomputerandtheotherunitsit connectsto.
Caution
Ensureelectroniccomponentsarefreefromcondensationbeforeturningon.Condensation canoccurwhentransitioningfromacoolair-conditionedenvironmenttoahotandhumid environment–suchasoutsideonanopenboat.Thesepartsshouldalsobeprotectedfrom comingintocontactwithwater,sea-spray ,etc.Failuretodosocouldresultincomponent failure.

1SetuptheSonarProcessorinthelocationavailablefortheoperatorworkstation.

Coveringthelaptopcomputerfromdirectsunlightwithasunshadewillmakethe displayeasiertosee.

bMakesurethatenoughspaceismadeavailableformaintenancepurposes.
cMakesurethattheinstallationmethodallowsforthephysicalvibration,
movementsandforcesnormallyexperiencedonavessel.
2SelectthepowercordwiththeappropriatelocalplugandconnectittotheACtoDC
SonarProcessorpowersupply.
3ConnecttheACtoDCpowersupplytotheSonarProcessor.
4ConnectthemousetoaUSBportontheSonarProcessor.

Whenyouconnectthecables,makesurethattheyareallproperlysecured,andable towithstandthevibrationandmovementsofthevessel.

TheSonarHeadisdesignedtoattachtoamountingbracket.
Prerequisites
ToinstalltheFlexview,youmusthavebasicmechanicalskills.W erecommendtwo
peopledotheinstallationtogether.
Weassumethatyouareequippedwithastandardsetoftools.Thistoolsetmustcomprise
thenormaltoolsformechanicaltasks.Thisincludesdifferentscrewdrivertypes,pliers, adjustablespanners,etc.Dependingonthechoseninstallationmethod,additionaltools mayberequired.
YouwillneedamountingbracketthatattachestotheFlexview.Thetypeofmounting
bracketyouneeddependsonhowyouintendtodeploythesonar.
Youwillneedtoinstallthefourplasticshoulderwashersandplasticisolationpadfound
inyourSonarHeadaccessorykit.ThesepartsareusedtoprotecttheSonarHeadfrom corrosion.
