Welcome to Kofax® Express

Introduction

Kofax Express is an easy-to-use, batch-oriented document scan application capable of high-speed scanning with real-time image display, indexing, and bar code detection. VirtualReScan (VRS) technology is built into the application to ensure optimal image quality. Kofax Express can release captured content to a folder that is accessible to your document management or storage system. Kofax Express can also release content to Kofax Capture or Microsoft SharePoint.

This guide explains how to quickly install and get started with Kofax Express.

System Requirements

Before installing Kofax Express, be sure to review the following software, hardware, operating system, certified scanner, and image storage requirements.

Recommended Hardware and Software

To ensure optimal performance, follow the recommendations in this section.

 Dual core processor (Quad core for scanners supporting more than 70 duplex

pages per minute)

 Memory: 2 GB  Hard disk: 250 GB (7200 rpm)  Disk space for software installation: 350 MB (allow more space for scanned

images)

 Monitor resolution: 1280 x 1024  DVD/CD-ROM drive  Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later, or Mozilla Firefox 2 or later

Note If Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 does not exist on your computer, the Kofax Express installer will install version 2.0 for you.

Certified Operating Systems

Kofax Express is certified on the following Microsoft Windows operating systems:

 Windows Vista (Enterprise and Business editions, 32-bit), Service Pack 1

To use Kofax Express with Windows Vista, your scanner must have a Vistacertified driver. Check with the manufacturer to confirm that your scanner will work with Windows Vista.

 Windows XP Professional, SP3

Certified Scanners

Kofax Express is certified with a wide range of industry-standard scanners, and new scanners are certified on a regular basis in the following license categories:

 Kofax Express for Desktop or Workgroup Scanners: Supports throughput up to

50 duplex pages per minute (based on letter-size pages scanned in landscape mode).

 Kofax Express for Low-Volume, Mid-Volume, or High-Volume Scanners:

Supports throughput between 50 and 130 duplex pages per minute (based on letter-size pages scanned in landscape mode).

For the most current list of Kofax Express certified scanners, select the Scanner Configurator from the Support pages on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com.

Image Storage

By default, Kofax Express stores images in the common application data folder within the Documents and Settings folder (or the ProgramData folder on a Windows Vista computer). Be sure to reserve sufficient disk space for scanned images. You can use the Job Setup tab in Kofax Express to set the batch path to the appropriate folder before you scan.

Performing a New Installation

To perform a new installation, you need the Kofax Express installation disk.

Note If a previous version of Kofax Express is currently installed on your computer, see Updating an Existing Installation on page 7.

X To install Kofax Express

1 At the computer where you want to install Kofax Express, log in with

Administrator rights and close all other applications.

2 Connect your scanner to the computer, but do not power on the scanner until

later in the procedure.

3 Insert your Kofax Express installation disk into the disk drive.

The installer should start automatically. If it does not, run setup.exe, which is

available from the root folder of your Kofax Express installation disk.

The installer welcome screen is displayed.

4 Click Next and follow the setup instructions on the screen.

During setup, you are prompted to accept the license agreement, select your

scanner from a list, and specify a location for installing the Kofax Express

software on your computer.

5 Click Install to start the installation.

6 When you are notified that the installation is complete, do the following:

a Select the option to restart your computer now. b Remove the installation disk from the drive. c Click Finish.

Note Some components, including scanner drivers, are not installed until the

computer is restarted.

7 If you have a Windows XP computer, do one of the following after the

computer is restarted:

 View the Kofax Express tutorial, which is opened automatically in a browser

window.

 Close the browser to bypass the tutorial (you can use the Help tab in Kofax

Express to restart the tutorial later).

If you have a Windows Vista computer, skip to the next step.

8 Power on your scanner.

Note If your scanner has a SCSI connector, you must restart the computer

again once the scanner is powered on.

9 Start Kofax Express and verify that your product license is active. For

instructions, see Starting Kofax Express on page 8.

Updating an Existing Installation

If you have a previous version of Kofax Express on your computer, you can update to the new version without removing the existing installation. Your jobs, job templates, and profiles are updated for use in the new version. However, any existing batches are deleted during the update process. Therefore, you may want to release batches before proceeding with the update.

To perform the update, you need the Kofax Express installation disk.

X To perform the update

1 At the computer where you want to perform the update, log in with

Administrator rights and close all applications, including Kofax Express.

2 Verify that your scanner is connected to the computer, but do not power on the

scanner until later in the procedure.

3 If you are currently using a Kofax Express hardware key, remove it from the

USB port on your computer.

4 Insert your Kofax Express installation disk into the disk drive.

The installer should start automatically. If it does not, run setup.exe, which is available from the root folder of your Kofax Express installation disk.
